To provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympicstyle sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.

Our organization prides itself on the principle that we will equip each athlete, coach and community with the means to participate in Olympics-style sports and competition at no cost to the athlete or their family. Currently 51,809 (2010 census) athletes participate in Special Olympics programs across the state. New York is the largest program in all of North America, and the sixth largest program in the world with 30,900 volunteers. New York is portrayed as a pioneer and model program for all states, as well as the 180 countries throughout the world where Special Olympics is being offered. It costs approximately $400 to support one athlete through one season of training and competition.

What is LETR?

The Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics is the movement's largest grass-roots fundraiser and public awareness vehicle. Internationally, in 2010 LETR raised more than $34 million for Special Olypics. More than 85,000 law enforcement officers around the world carried the Flame of Hope across 35 nations, raising awareness and funds for Special Olympics. In New York there are thousands of Law Enforcement representatives from hundreds of agencies that carry the Torch and part take in fundraisers! Last year more than $1 million was raised through Torch Run initiatives right her in New York! The Torch Run is an actual running event in which officers and athletes run the "Flame of Hope" to the Opening Ceremonies of Special Olympics competitions. Common Torch Run fundraisers include Polar Plunges, Pulls, T-Shirt Sales, Law & Orders, and Golf.

Polar Plunges

The LETR Polar Plunge is the premier pledge event to benefit Special Olympics New York! Law Enforcement officers are key organizers and recruiters for these unique events. In 2010-2011 more than 4,800 brave souls jumped into the chilly waters of New York raising more than $775,000 in 12 Plunges. More than 12,000 people were on hand to cheer on our plungers! There will be 11 Plunges across the state from Buffalo to Long Island in the 2010-2011 Plunge Series. The projected goal for the 201-2012 Plunge Series is $1 million!!!
