We begin by assisting Indian exporters with valuable and prompt information about the creditworthiness of buyers, their banks and countries. This helps the exporter manage his credit risk. To safeguard the exporter against unforeseen losses, we provide cost effective credit insurance cover in the form of policies. To expedite adequate bank finance to Indian exporters, we offer surety insurance cover for bankers in the form of Guarantees, at competitive rates. We have always taken the initiative to achieve improved performance in terms of profitability, financial and operational efficiency indicators and have strived to get maximum returns on investment.

he story of ECGC has all the makings of a success story. We had a modest beginning as a

Government of India venture in 1957. ECGC was started with an authorized capital of Rs. 5 crores, subscribed capital of Rs. 2.5 crores and a paid-up capital of Rs. 50 lakhs. Today, the authorized capital is Rs. 1000 crores and its paid-up capital is Rs. 800 crores. At the end of first year, we had only 146 policyholders and business covered was Rs. 1.30 crores. Today, we have over 13,000 policyholders. The upward trend of ECGC is further evident in the fact that from 1957 to 2006-07, the premium income has increased from a mere Rs. 43,000 to Rs. 619 crores and the claims paid went up from Rs. 4.51 lakhs to a stupendous Rs. 367 crores. The flagship objective of ECGC has always been to provide export credit insurance cover to exporters and banks. An example of the success we have had in achieving this objective is the fact that as against one product in 1957, today we have 30 different products in our portfolio to suit the requirements of various kinds of exporters and banks.

he covers issued by ECGC can be broadly

divided into three groups. Different policies issued to exporters to protect them against payment risks involved in exports on short term credit. Export credit insurance covers are issued to banks in India to protect them from risks of loss when they extend support to exporters at pre- shipment or post-shipment stage. We also design specific policies to protect Indian firms against payment risks involved in export on deferred terms of payment.

CGC has made its mark globally right from the time of its inception. In 1957, when the

corporation was formed, it became a member of the Berne Union, an international association of credit insurers, for the exchange of information on countries. And went on to become a member of the regional co-operation group. ECGC is an active member of the Berne Union. We have set up export credit insurance businesses in as many as 7 countries. We have co-operation agreements with ONDD in Belgium, and MIGA in USA. Further, we have a memorandum of understanding on alliance with Theo Finance PLC, UK. We have a global alliance with COFACE and a strategic alliance with Dun & Bradstreet (D & B). Our portfolio boasts of co-operation agreements with 16 export credit agencies.

within India. We have 5 regional offices in New Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Chennai and Bangalore and as many as 51 branch offices all over India. Our services are web based and the headquarter is connected by WAN to all our branches. 10 specialized branches are dedicated to exclusively service the exporters. There are specialized branches to service both large value customers and small and medium exporters. Six specialized branches exclusively service banks. A branch in Mumbai is dedicated solely to cover medium and long term exports.

MOU WITH THE GOVERNMENT OF INDIA I R D A ECGC signs a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Government of India every year. The objective is to evaluate the performance of the Corporation on an ongoing basis and to extend support to further its operations. The Insurance Regulatory Development Authority (IRDA) was set up in 1999 to regulate, promote and ensure orderly growth of the Insurance industry. The Corporation was registered with the IRDA on 27th September 2002 as an Export Credit Insurance Company and its registration no. is 124. The Corporation is classified under Credit Insurance (non-life insurance) and is recognized as a specialised institution.

ECGC is one of the top ten Public Sector Enterprises (PSE) which has recieved the MOU Award for Excellence from the Government of India for the financial year 2005 - 06. The award was received by Shri A.V. Muralidharan, CMD from the Hon'ble Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh on March 8, 2007. A C H I E V E M E N T S CGC is one of the oldest export credit insurance organizations in the world. We have endeavoured to provide international standard service at competitive rates to Indian exporters and bankers. The corporate office and 47 branch offices have been accredited with ISO 9001:2000 certification by the Bureau of Indian Standards. We have signed 16 Corporate Agency Agreements with commercial banks to sell our products and have as many as 48 brokers marketing our products. We have also tied-up with National Small Industries Corporation (NSIC) to sell our credit insurance products to Small & Medium Enterprises (SMEs). Internet is the "mantra of today's world" and we are in step with the times. We provide online services to all our customers. Further, policyholders will be aware of the identity of the buyers who have come to the adverse notice of the corporation. The banks will also have full access to the defaulters list of exporters. We have ventured into difficult territories like Africa, CIS and LAC. We have also helped countries like Trinidad and Tobago, Iran, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh and Kuwait to set up similar agencies in their countries. We have records of over 3 lakh overseas buyers and trade data on countries which in turn helps in assisting customers. We are the first organization to introduce cover for losses arising out of a buyer's nonpayment due to discrepancies in L/C. We equip policyholders with adequate delegation and discretion in resale, in exposure on buyers under various schemes to aid easy and rapid actions of their own. We have introduced simplified procedures for the settlement of claims up to Rs. 25 lakhs (banks). The policy claims up to Rs. 20 lakhs are settled within 7 days. The premium income of ECGC has increased from Rs. 207.34 crores in the year 1995-96 to Rs. 619 crores during the year 2006- 07. However, the sanctioned strength of the employees has remained at 633.

A customer satisfaction survey was done by the National Marketing Division of the Corporation with the help of the renowned independent agency AC Nielsen. We scored 8 on a scale of 1 to 10. Federation of Indian Exporters Organization (FIEO), the apex body of export promotion organizations of India has also recognized the admirable support played by ECGC over the years to promote Indias exports and a special award for Outstanding Support Services was given to ECGC in December 2006. ECGC has received Indira Gandhi Rajbhasha Award for 10 consecutive years for implementation of Official Language in the Corporation.
