Prattvilles Wilderness Park, also known as the Bamboo forest, opened in 1982 and was the first wilderness park located inside a citys limits in the united states. the area comprises 60-foot-tall bamboo with trunks spanning six inches in diameter, as well as a variety of plants, including one of the largest beech trees in the state. several years ago, Wilderness Park almost became a subdivision, but thanks to the spinners Club of Prattville, a womens service organization, the area was saved. Guided tours are available upon request, and can be scheduled by calling (334) 361-3640.
Coming home to history

Due to increasing transportation costs and the desire to live closer to work and shopping, the demand for downtown living options has grown in Prattville. hunts Alley has offered a solution. this former neighborhood of century-old mill houses between Prattville City hall and the Autauga County Courthouse is filling up with a diverse collection of residents, and attracting both families and singles with its modern housing choices. thanks to downtown revitalization efforts, the original shotgun-style houses built for workers at a nearby mill have been refurbished and are now home to a variety of small business entrepreneurs.

Building Character
A program that began in 2006, the PrattvilleAutauga Character Coalition is working to improve the communitys character. the coalition started when former Prattville Mayor Jim Byard Jr. heard about a similar organization in tuscaloosa and immediately began spearheading the effort for Prattville to launch a similar initiative. since its conception, the coalition has put posters with character traits listed in each of the countys schools, and has held a variety of events to spread the word. this nonprofit 501(c)3 corporation comprises a board of directors and six committees, focusing on business, education, faith, family, government and youth.
Preserving history
the historic ivy Creek united Methodist Church is located at the end of a tree-lined road just off highway 14 in Autauga County. Built in 1854, the exterior and interior of this Greek Revival-style building are well preserved, and as a result, a visit to the church can feel like being transported into the mid-19th century. According to Bob Gamble with the Alabama historical Commission, the ivy Creek united Methodist Church reflects what life was like the 1850s, when plantations were still prominent and cotton was the areas main cash crop.

Because of its many artesian wells that produced drinkable, usable water, prattville was once known as the Fountain City. several of these wells were capped or ceased to flow when efforts were made to move them, but many wells still produce gallons of sweet, free-flowing clear water daily. For example, the public can still sip from a well in the backyard of the prattaugan museum/heritage Center, or at heritage park overlooking autauga Creek. there is also a well under a tin-roofed pavilion on Doster road.

maxwell air Force Base is not only a military instillation, but home to a university as well. the base, located 10 miles southeast of prattville, houses the 42nd air Base Wing and 908th airlift Wing as well as air university. the university has three principal schools: squadron officer school, a two-month program oriented toward first lieutenants and captains; air Command and staff College, a year-long program for officers in the rank of major, lieutenant commander and squadron leader; and air War College, a year-long program for senior level officers.
A flourishing Downtown
located in historic downtown Prattville, the Creekwalk is a favorite gathering spot for many members of the community. the area received some special attention in 2010, when the Alabama Bureau of tourism and travel sponsored a themed program called the year of small towns and Downtowns. During this year, a marker was placed at the Creekwalk mentioning city founder Daniel Pratt, stating that he chose Prattvilles location because of its proximity to Autauga Creek and the Alabama River. two of the citys most popular events, Cityfest and Cruising the Creekwalk, are held at the popular downtown location.

magine a community that experiences 45 percent population growth while successfully maintaining the unique identity and special quality of life that make it such an attractive place to live and work. Now stop imagining and think of Prattville, which has maintained its small-town appeal while experiencing growth in every segment, including residential, retailing, manufacturing and tourism. Prattville is really poised for continued growth, says Joe Turner, president of All South Corp., one of the citys largest commercial and residential real estate companies. Weve lived a lot of places. This is our favorite place, Turner says. The reason is easy to see, says Nancy Hefner, owner of The Turtle Shell retail shop. Its the atmosphere, Hefner says. Signs of Growth Evidence of growth is everywhere: Prattvilles population grew to 33,960, up from 24,303, between 2000 and 2010, according to U.S. Census figures. Many residents commute to jobs in nearby Montgomery. Population growth got a boost from jobs created by Hyundai Motor Manufacturing, Alabamas nearby vehicle assembly plant. Weve been the chosen residency location for many of them, says Prattville City Planner Joel Duke. High Point Town Center offers national retailers such as JC Penney, Belk, Best Buy and includes Alabamas first location for Bass Pro Shops. Turner expects smaller shops and restaurants to follow. Historic Downtown Prattvilles locally owned retail shops including The Turtle Shell, A Touch of New York, Carol Brooks Home & Holiday Shoppe, Paravicinis Home Furnishings & Dcor, and Victorias Boutique are thriving despite the troubled national economy. Local residents and tourists are attracted by the districts unique shopping experience, Hefner says. The rapid population growth has led to a housing boom. Among the new subdivisons being built is Hearthstone, which includes 175 lots and offers high-end single-family residences. In addition, The Park Apartment Homes near The HomePlace offers what Turner describes as the most upscale apartments in the Montgomery MSA.
International Paper has a facility in Prattville and remains the citys largest manufacturer. Road and bridge projects are easing traffic congestion and providing increased access to the citys industrial park, Duke says. We try to take a managed approach to growth, he says. Welcoming Medline One of the citys newest corporate citizens, Medline Industries Inc., will serve health-care facilities throughout Alabama and northwest Florida from its 350,000-square-foot distribution center in Prattville. The company is the nations largest privately held manufacturer and distributor of medical supplies. The new facility will initially employ 50 people. The design of the distribution center incorporates the latest energy efficient technology and will have LEED (Leadership in Energy in Environmental Design) certification to measure its performance. Green technologies employed at the facility include: Motion sensors combined with energy-saving lighting to keep lights off when not in use. Daylight sensors to take advantage of the natural daylight from more than 300 skylights. As long as the skylights bring in sufficient light, the fixtures stay off. High-output light fixtures and on/off sensors. There are no on/off switches in the warehouse. Lights are controlled with the motion and daylight sensors. Super-sized fans to reduce dependence on air conditioning and heating. Tankless water heaters. Fluorescent bulbs. The building design and construction not only demonstrate Medlines commitment to our environment, but they also incorporate worldwide best practices in layout, technology and distribution methods as well as an outstanding team of professionals to deliver our products to our customers where and when they need them, says Bill Abington, Medlines president of operations. Prattville and Medline share the same attitude, Duke says. Its about building relationships and meeting needs.

aniel Pratt was a native of New Hampshire and grew up familiar with the industrial villages of New England. The architect builder eventually settled in Autauga County in the 1830s and wanted to build an industrial village, so Prattville was incorporated in 1839 and modeled after villages in New England. I have taken a lot of people on tours of Prattville and had one woman from Boston specifically say, My gosh, I could be in Massachusetts right now as we drove through downtown Prattville, says Ann Boutwell, volunteer and historian with the local Autauga County Heritage Association. Most larger communities in the South are constructed around a railroad depot or a courthouse square, but Daniel Pratt built this city with industries at the center. Industries provided income and employment for the residents, so he believed industries should be the center of a community. Boutwell says another reason why Prattville is nicknamed the New England Village of the South is that many of the early residents came to Alabama from New England to follow Pratt in his endeavors. He was an industrial genius and a lot of the citizens who followed him were from Connecticut, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Vermont, she says. Pratt believed that if the South stayed a purely agricultural economy, it would never progress and create the wealth it needed, because it would always remain dependent on the North. He built industries that utilized the products that were grown and manufactured in the South.
Those Roofs are Steep Boutwell adds that the people who settled in Prattville also built several New England-style homes that had steep roofs. Those types of roofs are common in New England so that snow will easily slide off them. Many homes in downtown Prattville have the steep roofs and then were also adapted by adding large porches and verandas to shade against the Southern sun, she says. Several of these small details set Prattville apart from other Southern towns even today. David Melling, president of Prattville Downtown Unlimited and owner of Smyth-Byrd House Bed & Breakfast, says the historic district continues to remain preserved and is still a vibrant and vital part of the city. The district has a half dozen churches, a half dozen restaurants, interesting shops that you wont see anywhere else, attractions like Creekwalk Garden and the Artesian Wells, and even nice lodging options like my bed and breakfast, Melling says. Attractive Attractions In recent times, the downtown area has seen additions such as attractive banners attached to lamp posts, garden urns in several high-traffic spots, and the placement of a bench and fountain in Creekwalk Garden. Prattville is a member of the Main Street Program, and Prattville Downtown Unlimited is always looking for more ways to make our district even more attractive, Melling says. In fact, we have a breakfast meeting on the first Wednesday of each month to discuss that very subject.

Arthur says the Prattville chamber doesnt operate by a cookie-cutter template. one member might join the chamber for the networking opportunities, another may join for the government advocacy we provide, while another might think its their civic duty to be part of the chamber, he says. some members join us for all of those reasons.

Along with a collection of galleries, events and exhibits throughout the city, there are places where works of art are created. Among the most popular is studio 101, a pottery studio and gallery. Run by teresa olson, the studio offers classes for both adults
and children, and holds several exhibitions throughout the year. the Prattauga Art Guild works to bring fine arts and art education to the entire region. this includes classes for children in various art forms. the Creative Arts Center is home to the guilds permanent collection, featuring works by Prattvilles own internationally known artists such as Charlie tin Man lucas, Russell everett and Nancy Ria. special events also help nurture the local arts scene, including ARtrek, which takes place each september and spans several locations in the River Region. the guild holds an annual Prattauga Art Guild Juried fall show and participates in the annual Prattville Cityfest, marshalling cadres of artists to paint outdoors during the event. And those who want to try out their own creative skills need only stop by the Creative Arts Center. the downtown art gallery offers classes year round, both for kids and for adults, and operates summer camps for kids.

in the 1830s, Daniel Pratt bought 1,000 acres of land to build a cotton gin manufacturing plant along Autauga Creek. today, the Daniel Pratt historic District covers 140 acres and includes 154 buildings, with architecture ranging from Greek Revival to italianate and Bungalow styles. Grand residences are also part of the landscape in Prattville. the Bell house, completed in 1893, is a two-story queen Anne beauty that is listed on the National Register of historic Places. Buena vista, a distinctive Greek Revival home, has attracted admirers for nearly two centuries. its said that Andrew Jackson liked the staircase so much he built one at the hermitage in the same style.

Golf has become a major attraction in Prattville, thanks to the Robert trent Jones Golf trail. the trail is a collection of championship-caliber golf courses distributed across the state of Alabama. one of the most popular sites on the trail is the Capitol hill site in Prattville. Capitol hill contains three separate 18 hole courses called Judge, legislator and senator. the Judge course was named one of the top 50 courses in America by the zagat survey of Americas top Golf Courses, and Golf Magazine named it one of 10 sites worthy of hosting the u.s. open. the Prattville Country Club offers another distinctive 18-hole course, along with an olympic-size pool and cabana.

youll find dozens of creeks, streams, ponds and lakes all within a short drive of the outdoor World store in Prattville. the Alabama River lays just to the south, offering a prime waterway. one of the most popular places to play is Cooters Pond Park, which is located right off the river. featuring two boat ramps and docks, along with a riverwalk, basketball court, dog park and open green spaces, Cooters Pond offers families an enjoyable day on the water or the land. Bear Creek hunting Preserve offers sportsmen the opportunity to hunt trophy whitetail, quail, dove and wild turkey. one of the most unique parks in the region is Wilderness Park, which features giant oriental bamboo that lines a short walking trail and shoots up more than 60 feet in the air. the park system in Prattville consists of nearly 20 city parks. families with small children can take advantage of the playgrounds at spring hill, Kiwanis, North highland, overlook, easy street and Pratt parks. the fountain City Arts festival is held on the first full weekend in March each year. local and regional artists are on hand to showcase their talents with displays and hands-on learning. Prattville Cityfest Presented by Baptist helath is held in historic downtown on the first weekend in May every year and is a great place for families to have fun with games, live music, arts and crafts, food vendors and more. for families who like to get creative, the annual 4th of July Celebration features a Cardboard Boat Race and is a great place to accomplish something together; building a boat out of cardboard and racing it against other families in a friendly competition, with prizes for winners in many categories, like fastest time, Most Creative and more. other annual events include spinners Pumpkin Patch in the fall, halloween Candy Walk, a Christmas Parade, a Mardi Gras Parade and more.

eeping up with the rapid growth of Autauga County has been a challenge, but the Autauga County school District has risen to the occasion. one of the newest schools built to accommodate the districts growing student population is actually one of the oldest. the new Marbury high school opened in 2010 and has about 600 students, but the schools history goes back to 1910. the new school features a computer lab for instruction in information technology courses, a fine arts program that has been widely praised and a state-of-the-art library. Autauga County schools serve approximately 10,000 students in grades kindergarten through 12, with reading and math achievement levels consistently exceeding the statewide average. the school systems athletic programs include football, basketball, baseball, tennis, soccer, golf, track and softball. there are 13 schools in the district, including the Autauga technology Center, which offers career preparation in the marketing, engineering, computer technology and health science fields.
for sucess in college and life. Autauga Academy is the oldest accredited private school in Autauga County. PCA offers a non-denominational Christian education program for students in pre-kindergarten through grade 12. enrollment at the school, founded in 1997, is approximately 600 students. the schools curriculum includes physical education, music, art, drama and foreign language, as well as Bible classes. east Memorial Christian Academy, a ministry of east Memorial Baptist Church, was opened in 2003 and has approximately 360 students in pre-kindergarten through high school. east Memorial offers two diploma tracks, a standard diploma and an advanced diploma, with additional credits in math and science curriculum required.

here is a shot i took last week at Buena vista, a historic mansion in Prattville, Alabama. this place is incredible, with three stories of amazing details like moldings and medallions created by artisans from england, a circular mahogany staircase spiraling 24 feet and large Greek columns on the facade. the home is now used for weddings, receptions, dinners and parties. its owned by the Autauga County heritage Association and operated as a historic house museum. its open to visitors on tuesdays from 10am til 2pm.
