February 9, 2011 Kathleen Peterson Human Resources WHYY, Inc. 150 North Sixth Street Philadelphia, PA 19106 Sent via email: hr-jobs@whyy.org Ms. Peterson: Please accept my resume for the Community Media Editor position posted on WHYY.org. My background in radio reporting, print journalism and online video production is an ideal skill set to train journalists, students and professionals to create multimedia content. With several years of experience developing multimedia packages for news outlets, I have a unique background that is ideal for this position. I am currently using my skills as the Web and New Media Manager for Common Cause. This position requires that I work with several state chapters of the organization to ensure that staff are trained in creating online content for their websites. I have worked with staff at all levels to create videos for our organizations blog and website, to take and edit photography for social media, and to write web-friendly text. I know that developing engaging content in this new media landscape means developing multiple ways to tell a story. This is especially important when explaining complicated and often-wonky issues tackled by our organization, a government watchdog nonprofit. Handling the national website and new media needs along with the needs of twenty state chapters is a challenge. I work with the states and national staff to pinpoint the needs at all levels of the organization. This involves prioritizing sometimes-conflicting goals, carefully communicating needs and limitations, and managing time in order to reach all that need help. My experience in training and managing multimedia reporters extends back to my time at the University of Missouri. I worked at the television station to manage and train multimedia student reporters. I worked with on-air reporters to identify areas in their stories suited for additional online content, and then assigned multimedia reporters to expand on the television newscast for a web audience. I taught students Flash in order to create interactive maps on deadline, guided photo editing to add to the websites visuals, and identified and assigned opportunities for additional online video. Giving students and professionals the skills to empower their storytelling is what gets me up in the morning. I would love to bring these skills to a powerful entity like WHYY and its exciting NewsWorks venture. Thank you for your time. I look forward to hearing from you. Sincerely, Liz Langton lizlangton@gmail.com 202.280.8221 lizlangton.com
