NY Organizations to Hold Press Conference Demanding Veto of Defense Bill Authorizing Indefinite Detention of US Citizens without Trial

Who: Civil liberties, social justice, legal, and peace organizations from across New York and the nation What: Press Conference When: 11 am, Thursday, 12/15/2011 Where: Federal Court steps, 500 Pearl Street, Manhattan Why: To demand the veto of the National Defense Authorization Act of 2012 (S.1867), which authorizes the military to arrest and indefinitely detain U.S. citizens on U.S. soil without charge or trial destroying protections enshrined in the Bill of Rights On December 15, the 220th anniversary of the ratification of the Bill of Rights, activists and human rights organizations will hold press conferences in New York City, Boston, Chicago, Minneapolis, San Francisco and other areas of the country to demand the veto of NDAA 2012, which includes provisions that would destroy the protections of the Bill of Rights. The Bill of Rights Day actions are supported by national coalitions such as the Muslim Peace Coalition, United National Antiwar Coalition, Bill of Rights Defense Committee, the Center for Constitutional Rights, the Committee to Stop FBI Repression and others. Under the NDAA provisions, anyone could be designated as a suspected terrorist creating a new means to silence activists or anyone else who speaks out on the economy, foreign policy, the environment, or anything else, said Jen Waller of the Committee to Stop FBI Repression. By passing the NDAA, Congress has again proven they represent the 1%.
