October 18 Meeting
Meeting was attended by 12 members who took part in an interesting discussion. We were happy to see Bruce Hord looking great as he continues to recuperate from his stroke. Randy Fogle had reported that he will not be able to visit us this year due to health problems in his family. We hope to see him in 2012. Sylvia Forbes is still dealing with removal of skin cancers. Latest was a skin graft from her neck to her nose. After dealing with pain and infection she is happy to report the stitches are out. Robin and Randy Pelton have moved and unfortunately she hurt her back. She promises they will be at our December Celebration with door prizes. We were concerned because Susan and Ray Golden were absent. We were relieved to find out they had made another trip to China and they are exhausted, but o.k.!

Rosie Price and Susan Golden will be decorating the tree for Akron Childrens Hospital Tree Festival. Each year seems to be better than the last. Everyone has received the October 2011 Lifelines, but few have read this issue. This is a must read as we plan for our future!
TRIOs 25th Anniversary is in 2012. All TRIO members and their families are invited to attend this weekend event which will be in Pittsburgh where it all began. The date is to be decided. 2011 Gift of Life Walk & Run
Ray Golden and Hayley did a great job of setting up the Akron-Canton TRIO Display, distributing brochures and information about TRIO and the need for organ donation. Hayley, Rosie Price and Mary walked the 1.5K for The Race for Amanda Team. Amanda was there to cheer us on. *********************

Celebration of Life Picnic
Although it was raining, nothing could stop Ray Golden from doing a great job of grilling the hot dogs and hamburgers. We were happy the Hinkels daughter Heather and her terrific children could join us. Also, it was great to see Kevin Sawyer and Sally Davis again. Jacqui Scolaro brought her pretty granddaughters. She taught all the children how to make and decorate paper airplanes. They made flowers out of tissue and gave them to special ladies. A great time was had by all. We hope more can join us next year. Remember, the picnic is always the second Sunday in August.
Poem
written by Micki Wise TO THOSE WHO FEEL THEY NEED THEIR ORGANS WHEN THEY ARE RESURRECTED.*.. God will give us new eyes with which to see He will give us new kidneys with which to p-He will give us a new heart so full of love, And many more miracles from his realm above. And who wants to come back as a newborn with used organs and tissues? *Note: This is apropos for Presumed Consent.

National Donor Sabbath was created to encourage faithbased leaders to bring education and awareness of the need for organ, eye and tissue donors to multicultural communities. It is a call to action for local places of worship to help spread the message of hope and share in celebration of giving men, women and children a second chance of life. Lifebanc will provide your church with promotional and education tools to distribute to your congregation in efforts of motivating members to become registered donors. Becoming a registered donor brings hope to more than 110,000 men, women and children waiting for lifesaving organ, eye, and tissue transplants.
As part of National Donor Sabbath, we want you or your place of worship to partner with Lifebanc by doing the following: Assign volunteers to distribute information at the display table at your church. * Identify a patient or donor family in your congregation who is willing to share a brief testimony at woship service. If there are members with no direct connection, Lifebanc can provide a volunteer to share a testimony. *Distribute bulletin inserts provided by Lifebanc. *Dedicate special prayer time during service to pray for those waiting for transplants and donor families. *Assign a scripture reference as a theme. *Provide an article in the church newsletter or on the church website. *Register organ, eye & tissue donors with material provided by Lifebanc.

October 22, 2011: Well, 5 more radiation treatments then and x-ray to see if the tumor is smaller. Although, the oncologist said it would take six weeks. Dick had gained another 1.5 pounds this week. We have been out shopping, YES, he is in the wheelchair in the stores and having a good time doing another of his favorite things.... spending money .... keeping the economy going. We have also, in the last week, been to our little Vegas. He does so enjoy the slots. (me. too) Well, thats it for now... More later. Thank you all. Keep up the good deeds!! Love you all, Joan
September 28, 2011: Dick was taken off IV chemo because of ineffectiveness. He now takes a pill daily specific for lung cancer. He will start on Monday with radiation to the tumor in his right lung that is partially collapsed. It will be a series of 20 treatments. He is more active. Purchased a lift chair which has helped him getting in and out of it. He sits now for a few hours at a time. His hair has a few remaining strands. He gained weight. The bedsore is less in size and a gel mattress will be coming soon. Fatigue and weakness still persist but he tries to handle them as best he can. Again, thank you for your cards, calls, visits and more importantly, your prayers. He has such a strong faith and with your extra boost he says he can face anything. God bless, Joan

Third Frontier Funding helps company increase donor kidney odds, Cleveland jobs
Submitted by Bruce Hord
The Cleveland based company, working with the Cleveland Clinics Glickman Urological Institute, CWRU, Toshiba Medical Systems and Canon, received $1 million for the development of special MRI coils for imaging donor kidneys before transplant to determine viability. Currently, potentially viable kidneys are sometimes rejected for transplant, or there are complications after transplant. This technology will improve the chances of success as well as reduce the number of kidneys that are thrown away. The program will result in a turnkey system of equipment, analysis software and clinical protocols which will be marketed to transplant centers on a worldwide basis, says John L. Patrick, chief marketing officer for QED.....Patrick says the technology should be on the market in less than two years, depending on how clinical trials go..... Quality Electrodynamics (QED) was one of the local recipients of Ohio Third Frontier funding for the development of an imaging system that will improve the way doctors evaluate whether a kidney is viable for donation.
