A

n operating system is software, consisting of programs and data, that runs on computers, manages computer hardware resources, and provides common services for execution of various application software. The operating system is the most important type of system software in a computer system. Without an operating system, a user cannot run an application program on their computer, unless the application program is self booting. For hardware functions such as input and output and memory allocation, the operating system acts as an intermediary between application programs and the computer hardware, although the application code is usually executed directly by the hardware and will frequently call the OS or be interrupted by it. Operating systems are found on almost any device that contains a computerfrom cellular phones and video game consoles to supercomputers and web servers. Examples of popular modern operating systems are: BSD, Linux (Ubuntu, Fedora, OpenSuSE, Debian etc.), Mac OS X, Microsoft Windows and UNIX.

MAXIMIZE
This function allows you to concentrate on one application by making its window cover the entire screen.

MINIMIZE
This function allows you to keep an application running, but remove it from the desktop area so that other applications can be accessed. The minimized program becomes a bar at the bottom of the screen, and can be accessed by clicking on the bar.

RESIZE

If an application window is not maximized, it can be resized so that more or less content can be seen. If you move your mouse pointer to one of the edges of the window, it will become a two-way arrow. At this point, hold down the left mouse button and drag the perimeter of the window in or out. When you release the mouse button, the window will resize to your specifications.

CLOSE
This function closes and exits the application you are running. However, if you are running an application such as Microsoft Word, the window of each document will have a close button, and clicking this button will only close that particular document, and not the entire program. It is important to always save your work before using the close feature, as any unsaved changes will be lost.

The Start Menu and Start Button are user interface elements used in the later versions of the Microsoft Windows operating systems and in some X window managers. The Start Button provides a central launching point for application and tasks.

Control Box

The control box provides a menu that enables you to restore, move, size, minimize, maximize, or close a window. The border separates the window from the desktop. You resize the window by dragging its borders outward to expand it and inward to contract it. The title bar displays the name of the current file and the name of the current program. Use the Minimize button to temporarily decrease the size of a window or remove a window from view. While a window is minimized, its title will appear on the taskbar. Click the Maximize button and the window will fill the screen. After you maximize a window, if you Click the Restore button, the window will return to its former size.

Toolbars generally display right below the menu, they can be dragged and displayed along any of the window borders. You use the icons on the toolbars to send commands to the program. The work area is located in the center of the window. You perform most of your work in the work area. The status bar provides you with information about the status of your program. By default, the taskbar is located on the bottom edge of the desktop. You can click the taskbar and drag it to other locations. The Start button, active program buttons, icons for quick access to programs, and the current time are located on the taskbar.

In a graphical user interface of computers, a dialog box (or dialogue box) is a type of window used to enable reciprocalcommunication or "dialog" between a computer and its user. It may communicate information to the user, prompt the user for a response, or both. A dialog box is most often used to provide the user with the means for specifying how to implement acommand, or to respond to a question or an "alert" (see below).
