Selection
Kingspan provide two ways of selecting Multibeam Purlin sections. Ultimate loads to BS5950:Part 5:1998 can be found in a separate booklet contained in the back of this handbook. Alternatively, the Kingspan Toolkit is available on CD see inside back cover.

Design Considerations
Multibeams are generally specified as double spanning members to maintain design economy. To ensure equal load distribution to the supporting steel, the double span members are staggered, typically utilising only one sleeve per line of purlins. Section length is generally limited to 16m and due to this bays over 8m are normally supplied as single spanning lengths and sleeved on site to maintain continuity. Section lengths greater than 16m are available for special requirements. In addition a continuous system utilising heavy end bay sections is available for larger buildings. This system can be more economical when used in buildings of ten bays or more. Double Spanning Systems Sleeves are required at connections to single span end bays only. This eliminates the use of heavy gauge end bay sections which simplifies the system and offers a saving in material.

1 Single Span Sleeved Systems Sleeves are required at alternate joints throughout the roof and all joints on the penultimate rafter. Note: Single span systems are generally used when: 1. Bay centres exceed 8.0m. 2. When site restrictions dictates single length to be used. Normal double span load tables can be used.

Multibeam Purlins

Continuous Systems
The Kingspan Continuous Purlin System (popularly known as Heavy end bay system) can be considered on larger buildings with typically ten bays or more. Potential economies are achieved by a reduction in purlin section size of the internal bays by utilising a heavier section at each end of the purlin run. Continuous Double Spanning Systems The double spanning system uses considerably fewer components than the single span system. Joints should be staggered when double spanning to aid construction.

Continuous Single Span Systems Heavier purlin sections must be used in both end bays in a purlin run with all joints sleeved.

Purlin Sleeve
Connections All connections undertaken on the Multibeam Purlin system must be as stipulated by Kingspan Insulated Roof & Wall Systems. If any difficulty is experienced please contact our Technical Services Department. Important Note: Load tables or design software must be used in association with this information, and consideration must be given to anti-sag tie arrangements. See page 12.

Purlin Anti-Sag Tie Requirements

Anti-Sag Ties Anti-sag ties are required to prevent distortion and misalignment of purlins during the fixing of sheeting in certain conditions. They may also be required in cases where wind reversal (uplift) loads are experienced. See table opposite for anti-sag requirements for buildings with purlin centres up to 2 metres. For purlin centres over 2 metres consult Kingspan.

Built Up Roofs For anti-sag requirements with built up flat roof construction see page 18. Tiled Roofs For anti-sag requirements with tiled roof construction see page 17. Clip-fix Cladding When using single skin panels see page 16. Mono Pitch Roofs See page 68. Roof Slopes Over 18 For roof slopes outside those shown above consult our Technical Services Department. Roof Slopes Over 30 For roof slopes of 30 and over consider using stiffened purlin cleats. Long Roof Slopes For roof slopes exceeding 20m long diagonal wires may be required to support the downslope component of the load. Multilok Ties Multilok ties must not be used on purlin sections exceeding 205mm deep. Temporary Propping When no anti-sag ties are used temporary spacers and propping may be required during sheeting of the roof. Apex Ties Apex Ties must be used in all cases where anti-sag ties are required. On bays >6.1m when no anti-sag ties are used we recommend that apex ties are used to provide stability during sheeting of the roof. Anti-sag Requirements assume that there are two slopes with a central ridge. On roof slopes of 6O or more, over 20m in length, we recommend that wire ropes are considered within the slope length to limit the load applied to the apex tie. Load Tables & Structural Properties Ultimate loads to BS5950:Part5:1998 can be found in a separate Properties & Load Tables booklet at the back of this handbook or alternatively you can use the Kingspan Toolkit CD. Cladding
Single Skin Cladding The published safe loads may be used with all through fix single skin cladding, including use with foam board or over blanket insulation adequately fixed to the section. Twin Skin Cladding The published safe loads may be used with all traditional twin skin cladding products, providing that a through fix steel liner is employed adequately fixed to the section. Clip-fixed Cladding If a through fixed steel liner panel is used in conjunction with clipfixed roof panels, no additional restraint may be required and published safe loads may be used. Only if deeper purlins are used over short spans with very high service loads will it be necessary to provide additional restraints. Loads should be restricted to 2.5kN/linear metre when using 235mm and 265mm deep Multibeam sections without additional restraints. If Multibeam Purlins are used without a steel liner panel with single skin panels additional restraints are required, as detailed in the table on page 16 to enable published load tables to be used.

Kingspan Composite Panels Tests have proven that when using Kingspan composite roof panels with Multibeam Purlins no additional restraints are required to those detailed in the table on page 12. The combined construction offers the restraint necessary to enable the published safe load tables to be used. Other Cladding For all other types of cladding eg. fibre cement consult the Kingspan Technical Department. Important The correct drill point and thread form for self drill self tap fixing screws must be chosen for use with gauges less than 1.5mm.

The Kingspan Roof Tile Insulated Panel System is an economic alternative to the traditional pantile roof. Available in Terracotta and Anthracite - the single fix installation, directly to purlins, can save up to 50% of the construction time required for built up alternatives.

Restraint System for Tiled Roofs

The profile shape and strength of the Multibeam section is eminently suitable to sustain the greater loadings imposed upon the purlin sections by a tiled roof. However, due to the nature of the forces imposed upon the purlin sections by this form of roof construction, additional considerations are required in the design of the purlin and its restraint system. Specific load tables for tiled roofs can be found in the separate booklet at the back of this handbook. Anti-Sag Requirements The Kingspan angle strut brace system caters for the downslope force produced in the roof from dead and superimposed loads. Slope length is limited by the load on diagonal ties. Consult our Technical Services Department for conditions outside those shown. The anti-sag system is based on struts at 1/3 intervals for all bay sizes. A minimum angle of 30 for rod diagonals is required (as detailed in diagram). In order to maintain 30 on larger bays struts should be positioned at 1/4 intervals as detailed in diagram shown. Stiffened cleats should also be used with tiled roof construction. See page 65. Anti-Sag Requirements with metal liner When certain cassett metal liner profiles are fixed to the Purlin top flange enough restraint may be provided in order to use the standard load tables (See separate Properties & Load Tables Booklet) in conjunction with the anti-sag system shown here. For further advice please contact our Technical Services Department. Tile Panel System Kingspan Insulated Roof Tile Panel System is a suitable alternative to fixing traditional clay pantiles. Flat & Low Pitched Roofs

On low pitched roofs, a built-up form of construction or a standing seam metal sheeting system may be employed. The following information concerns built-up roof construction in which a metal decking is fixed securely to the purlin by means of self drill tap fixings. Where Kingspan Standing Seam System or composite roof panel is specified see page 13. For other forms of roof construction consult our Technical Services Department. The load tables contained in the document at the back of this handbook may be used for selection of the purlin. However, deflection requirements are generally given greater attention on low pitched roofs. The designer may use the general bending formula = WL3 185.E.l in conjunction with the published section properties or the Kingspan Software to evaluate a satisfactory double span deflection. For further advice on any aspect of the Multibeam system contact our Technical Services Department.

Applications
Industrial and Commercial The Kingspan Multibeam Cladding Rail System has been designed for use in industrial and commercial applications with all common cladding materials. Agricultural Multibeam Cladding Rails may be considered for use with lightweight metal cladding when designed in accordance with BS5502 (Design of Buildings and Structures of Agriculture) for use in agricultural buildings. Wall Cladding Options Multibeam rails can be used with all types of conventional modern wall cladding including metal composite panels, secret fix wall systems and metal twinskin construction. Two methods of supporting horizontal cladding are shown in this handbook. See Construction Details pages 86/87.

Firewall
To contain a fire within an industrial building in accordance with the building regulations, a wall construction conforming to BS476:Part 22:1987, may be used. Multibeam cladding rails can be used to form part of the wall construction and, as such, will require some means of ensuring that expansion does not affect the stability and integrity of the wall in fire condition. The Multibeam Firewall System, which is a precise and complete assembly of components, utilises a slotted connection to the Multibeam sections in conjunction with a plastic heat softening washer to provide an adequate expansion in the event of fire. For full details contact Kingspan Technical Department.

General Notes 1. Firewall rails are 30mm shorter in length than standard rails and supplied with 54mm x 14mm slotted holes to cater for expansion. 2. Although bottom rails must be single spanning to suit fire conditions, standard sleeves may be introduced to provide continuity for structural considerations. 3. Sections must have gauge 1.5mm or greater. 4. At the discretion of the engineer, joints on rails may be staggered to provide uniform distribution of wind loadings to support structures.

21

Multibeam Cladding Rails

Design Considerations
Multibeam cladding rails are generally specified as double spanning to maintain design economy. To ensure equal load distribution the connections between double spanning rails should be staggered where possible. Section lengths are generally limited to 18m. Rails for bays over 8m can be supplied in single lengths and sleeved on site to maintain continuity.

Double Spanning Systems Sleeves are required at connections to single span end bay members only. This eliminates the use of heavier gauge end bay sections.

Rail Sleeve Single Span Sleeved Systems Sleeves are required at alternate joints throughout the side wall and all joints on the penultimate stanchions. Normal double span tables can be used. Note: Single span systems are generally used when: 1. Length of rail exceeds maximum length of 16m. 2. When site access dictates that single lengths should be used. 3. Door openings etc. prevent use of double span rails.

Openings
In sidewall situations where openings are required we recommend the use of Multichannel sections. These versatile sections provide an easy solution for door and window openings, trimmers etc. and section sizes are compatible with Multibeam cladding rail section sizes. Where required Multichannels can be used as a substitute for Multibeam cladding rails as all components (eg. Cleats etc.) are fully compatible. It must be noted however, that equivalent section sizes may not provide an identical performance and heavier gauges may be required. (See separate Properties & Load Tables Booklet).

Multibeam Cladding Rails

Insulated Panel Laid Horizontal

The Multibeam cladding rail system can provide an effective and versatile method of support. Two basic systems are shown to cater for the individual nature of the cladding used. System 1 The G140/150 Horizontal Panel Vertical Support member can be used where a 140mm bearing face is required, i.e. at the vertical butt joint between composite panels. At all support positions where the composite panel is continuous, vertical Multichannels should be used. Where the horizontals are channels the vertical channels can be connected using Kingspan patented autoform connections see page 57. Location of verticals are determined by composite panel spanning capability and wind loading. Other support arrangements are shown on pages 86-88.

System 2 A frequently specified form of construction is the built up system comprising profiled metal liner, glass fibre and profiled sheet. When the liner is laid vertically, restraint is supplied to the horizontal cladding rails which may then be designed using the published load tables. Vertical zed sections, spanning between the cladding rails, give the necessary space for insulation as well as a conventional fixing point for the horizontal sheeting. In this system the vertical zed spacer supports the horizontal cladding and consequently the wind load applied must be resisted. The heavy duty zed spacer may be specified for the conditions shown. As an alternative to the zed spacer as a vertical member, horizontal sheeting may be fastened to vertical Multibeams or Multichannels fixed between the cladding rails providing a variation to the above system.
