OFSTED 2012 and Inquiry

The new OFSTED framework is up and running and, with it, a number of key changes to how classroom practice will be judged. A closer look at the framework will reveal a greater emphasis on the principles of inquiry-based learning and how teachers offer deeper learning experiences. All very positive aspects of learning and teaching. What is new or different? It would appear that the main differences between Framework 2009 and the new framework include: Appropriate use of new technology to maximise learning. There is now a greater opportunity than ever to embrace the wealth of web 2.0 learning tools that are freely available to enhance highly engaging learning experiences. The extent to which teachers secure high quality learning by setting challenging tasks. We must begin to engage our young learners at the beginning of lessons with these challenging tasks. No more sitting on carpets for the rst 20 minutes of lessons. Getting the children inquiring straight away ....... Wonderful stuff!! The use of discussion and collaboration to promote learning. Yes, yes, yes ......... Effective learning happens through social construct and effective collaboration. The teaching of co-operative learning must become a priority. The extent to which teachers enable the pupils to develop the skills to learn by themselves. Staff must look at how they are promoting independence in learning and not just independence. Which explicit strategies do you are you colleagues use to promote independent learning? The extent to which teachers motivate the pupils to learn and foster their curiosity about learning. Wonderful ....... A greater emphasis on developing the learning-to-learn skills of every young learner. How do staff increase children's curiosity about learning? They promote inquiry-based learning. They pose an interesting worthwhile question at the beginning of the learning experience and allow the young learners to begin to construct their own knowledge, their own understanding and their own meaning. Of course the teachers must offer new learning, new knowledge or new content, but this should happen later in the learning experience. Allow the children to become engaged rst and enable them to explore and inquire into a worthwhile issue. By teaching through the traditional method, the ceiling judgement will be 'good'. By teaching through inquiry, the ceiling judgement will be 'outstanding'. It is only what our young learners deserve.
