Dear Parent/Carer,
As you probably know, each year the government and the council publish information designed to show how well schools and local authorities are improving pupil performance and achievement year on year. In similar fashion, we in Langlees Primary School and Langlees Nursery Class would like to tell you how we are progressing in our school. This leaflet has been designed to do just that. It is our Standards and Quality Report for last session. Inside, you will find a brief description of our main achievements during the last session. Whilst we do many things in the course of a year, we have focused on what we consider to be the most important areas. I have outlined the schools main priorities for next session. Under the previous 5 to 14 curriculum guidelines you would have been very familiar with the different levels of attainment from A to E. Along with Falkirk Council Education Services we will be working to replace these assessment indicators and reporting structures with new systems that will better reflect the new national curriculum guidelines. I hope you find the leaflet helpful. If you have any questions about it, please do not hesitate to phone the school office for an appointment. I will be pleased to offer clarification.

School Priorities for Session 2010-2011

One of the key tasks was to develop a progressive programme for effective teaching and assessment of writing (not handwriting) from Nursery to P7. All staff attended In-Service training and took part in a Cluster moderation exercise where examples of pupil work from Nursery to Secondary Yr 2 were discussed and assessed using the new criteria relating to Curriculum for Excellence. This opportunity to share with colleagues was very beneficial to all who took part. Langlees staff then worked in groups to devise a programme for use in our school. Impact on the pupils

Pilots in classes have been very successful and the children have enjoyed learning about WOW words. Their use of vocabulary in story writing has been more adventurous. Pupils are actively involved in self and peer assessment. A progressive programme ensuring pace and challenge is in place.

This year also saw us review our Mental Maths programme. Staff discussed and shared ideas for teaching. Resource materials were considered which would support teaching and learning. The emphasis was on Active Learning. Impact on pupils

Planned progressive programme in place from P2-P7. Variety of approaches to ensure all learning styles are catered for.

For several years class teachers have been applying Assessment is for Learning (AifL) strategies to help pupils assess their own performance. This year we wanted to revisit this area and devised a guideline for staff. Two classes successfully piloted Learning logs. The children in these pilots had the opportunity to choose from a menu of tasks for Homework and also assess how well they had completed the task. Impact on Pupils

Staff consistently using AifL strategies across the curriculum. All pupils now involved in peer/self-assessment, Learning logs will now be implemented in P4-7.

As a holder of one Green Flag Langlees Primary was keen to succeed in achieving Green Flag status for a second time. The new group consisting of staff, pupils and a parent representative drew up a new Action Plan. The main areas were Litter, Waste Minimisation, School Grounds, Health and Well Being and Transport. All pupil groups were involved in one way or another. The Tidy Team worked to keep the playground tidy. The Buddies helped to support pupils in the playground making sure they had someone to play with. The Playleaders encouraged the children to play games at lunchtime. The Eco-Team came up with some amazing ideas on how to reduce waste in the dining room and also made some money by recycling drinks cans.

Impact on Pupils

All pupils were actively involved in preparing L.P.S. for the inspection. As a result the School achieved our 2nd Green Flag with no recommendations which is extremely rare! The whole school celebrated this success which had a very positive impact on the Ethos.

What else have we been doing this session? Pupils from P4-7 presented the Wizard of Oz. P6 & P7 pupils went on a Residential Trip to Auchengillan. P7 took part in a Survey and Clean Up of litter in the Local Community. Eco week for all pupils. Winner of Falkirk Rotary Club Competition.

Transition Between Nursery and Primary 1 We wanted to develop our transition between nursery and P1 to ensure the children felt confident when entering P1. Nursery staff and P1 staff held regular successful meetings to outline expectations of children before they entered P1. Outcomes & Experiences were discussed and targets set. A joint project was discussed and theme set. We then introduced the project to the children in nursery and P1. Time was set aside for nursery children to go to P1 to work on the project. Children were involved in making puppets and acting out popular childrens stories. The children then successfully held a puppet show to act out the story to the rest of the nursery children and another P1 class. Impact on Learners

Pupils actively engaged with each other. Pupils gained confidence with peers. Pupils successfully acted out puppet show and gained a sense of achievement.

Positive relationships were made between pupils and staff. The transition for the pre-schoolers was very successful with very few tears!

Literacy/Numeracy Staff looked at literacy and numeracy within the nursery and the opportunities that were being given to pupils. Staff evaluated the areas within the nursery and identified areas for improvement. We then ensured each area of the nursery provided children with literacy and numeracy opportunities. We ensured the nursery was rich in print and number. A literacy and numeracy booklet was developed to show ideas of how we could ensure each area of the nursery was rich in print and number. More opportunities were provided for children to recognise print and numbers.

Nursery Priorities for Session 2010-2011

Helix Woodland Walk The Nursery joined the community education team to participate in the Helix woodland walk. We involved the parents and they came along with their child. During the walk children were encouraged to look for mini-beasts and the guide pointed out lots of information. The children collected leaves and printed with them during the art and craft session after the walk. It was a very successful day and lots of positive feedback was received from parents:

I didnt know that all the greenland was down there, both myself, Grandma & Chloe really enjoyed it. It is a lovely area which should be used. We also enjoyed the bark rubbing and leaf collection. I managed to talk to some parents that I hadnt talked to before. The Teddy bears picnic was very enjoyable and the chance for the children to do so some craft work was also very good.

Declan and I really enjoyed the walk. I didnt know that the woodlands were in Bainsford. Declan loved every bit of it, even the picnic.

Talking Thinking Floor Books We introduced Floor Books in the nursery to develop our projects further. Children are encouraged to think about what they already know about a topic and what they would like to learn. We then build up a book with photographs, drawings, mind maps, art work and graphs of all the things we learned. We use these books for future discussions. The children enjoyed looking at these books in the story corner.

Eco-Club The nursery children have been busy learning about Eco issues. The Eco monitors were nominated by the pupils and ensured the nursery were being Green. They had daily jobs of recycling, saving energy by turning off lights and saving water by turning off taps and feeding the birds. The children were able to stand up in front of their peers and explain why they were doing the jobs. This built up the childrens confidence talking in groups. Well done!

Our Priorities for Session 2011-2012

Topic work We will be looking closely at our existing topics to see how well they fit in with Curriculum for Excellence Experiences and Outcomes. Links need to be made across curricular areas. This will give us the opportunity to update some topics and thereby offer the children more interdisciplinary learning experiences. Planning Following on from our successful review of teachers weekly plans we will be assessing the appropriateness of our termly plans within the curriculum for Excellence framework. Health and Well Being The group working on this priority will review our current guidelines against the Curriculum for Excellence Experiences and Outcomes. This will allow us to identify any gaps and ensure that the programme is progressive. Assessment and Recording We will be looking at our existing procedures for monitoring pupil progress. Again Curriculum for Excellence will be our measure of what we need to change. Additional Support Needs The group will look at existing procedures and practice in supporting learners. We have already made changes to the way we keep information for pupils. This will allow us to assess our effectiveness against Local and National Guidance.
