animal hoarding
By MELISSA DIPENTO
The Voorhees Sun
Last year, producers from Ani-
mal Planets series Confessions:
Animal Hoarding, contacted the
Animal Welfare Association of
Voorhees to discuss helping a
local family whose daughter was
becoming ill due to a rising ani-
mal population in the household.
The show is intended to ex-
plore the stories of people who
own more animals than they can
care for, while providing families
with the counsel-
ing they need to
move on. Produc-
ers got in touch
with the AWA, a
no-kill shelter
that takes in ani-
mals, provides
the necessary
care and shots
for them and
helps find a
home for them.
Last summer,
a much larger
animal-hoarding
story was uncov-
ered in the re-
gion by Joas
Arc, an animal
rescue in
Audubon.
At first, the
shelter found
about 60 cats, but quickly, more
and more animals became known
in the home ultimately totaling
about 165 cats.
So Joas Arc called in a few
friends, including the AWA, the
Almost Home Animal Shelter and
St. Huberts Animal Welfare Shel-
ter.
We will save them all. We have
to, said Joyce Moyer of Joas
Arc.
The AWA took 30 cats back to
the shelter to be cared for, said Ex-
ecutive Director Maya Richmond.
She said the shared experience of
working with other local shelters
to care for the 165 cats was re-
warding for all.
It was incredible to see. At the
AWA, its remarkable to watch the
cats get the socialization they
need to build confidence. Its
quite rewarding
how resilient
they are, Rich-
mond said.
Of the 30 cats
rescued by the
AWA, 20 have
been adopted
and 10 are still
waiting to find
loving homes.
Richmond
said she feels the
show can have a
positive impact
on viewers, even
though the topic
can be quite sen-
sitive for some.
She said pro-
ducers meet
with the family
involved, find
local organiza-
tions that can help with the res-
cue and provide one year of psy-
chological support to those in-
volved.
We dont know the familys
history or why people hoard. But
Kemery named coach of the year
By MELISSA DIPENTO
The Voorhees Sun
As a kid, whenever Boris Beck-
er took the court, George Kemery
found himself glued to the televi-
sion in awe of the German who
dominated the world of profes-
sional tennis in the 80s.
Kemery himself played recre-
ationally as a child, varsity dou-
bles in high school at Haddon
Heights and went on to play club
tennis in college.
In 2003, Kemery began coach-
ing the boys ten-
nis team at East-
ern Regional High
School and picked
up the girls tennis
team in 2005.
After a handful
of winning sea-
sons under his
belt, including a boys 19-6 record
last season, Kemery has reached
another milestone in his career.
Last week, Kemery learned
that he was named 2011 Northeast
Sectional Coach of the year, a des-
ignation given by the National
Federation of State High School
Associations.
He was the only tennis coach to
receive recognition in the North-
east Region, which consists of
Connecticut, Massachusetts, Ver-
mont, New Hampshire, Maine,
New York, New Jersey, Pennsyl-
vania and Rhode Island.
In September 2011, Kemery
was named the state boys tennis
coach of the year and was encour-

we work hard for animals to find
safe homes, Richmond said.
On the first episode the AWA
was a part of, the show helped a
child who was sick from all the
animals in her home receive med-
ical treatment at Cooper Universi-
ty Hospital, Richmond said.
In this most recent effort, Rich-
mond said the groups collaborat-
ed well to provide all the animals
a safe home. The episode will air
on Animal Planet at 10 p.m. on
Jan. 27.
There were good outcomes for
the animals and the groups
worked well together. It was very
smooth, Richmond said. The in-
teractions we had with producers
and staff were great.
Once at the AWAs shelter, the
animals are given the necessary
medical care needed to be a per-
manent fixture in a caring home.
The animals typically come from
local owners, or surrounding
shelters, with high kill-rates. Cur-
rently, there are 85 animals at the
AWA and 26 foster animals.
The shelter also was recently
awarded a two-year grant of
$180,000 from PetSmart Charities
to cover spray/neuter services for
the Voorhees, Gloucester Town-
ship, Lindenwold and Bellmawr
communities.
The best way to save lives of
cats at our area shelters is to
make sure that fewer cats enter
the system to begin with, Rich-
mond said. By intensely focus-
ing our spay/neuter efforts on lo-
cations with the most at-risk cats,
we can stop the cycle of unwant-
ed litters and homeless cats, save
lives, and even money for the
county because there will be
fewer cats in the shelter.

pointment for an owned, stray or

Episode set to air Jan. 27
Continuing its mission to bring
theater education to children and
young adults, the Voorhees The-
atre Company is presenting two
free acting master classes.
The two-hour seminars con-
ducted by the Walnut Theatres
Kate Galvin, are scheduled for 7
p.m. Jan. 24 (open to grade 12
through age 22) and 10 a.m. Jan.
28 (grades 9 to 11) at Voorhees
Middle School, 1000 Holly Oak
Drive, Voorhees.
The curriculum for both ses-
sions includes audition tools, pro-
viding information on headshots,
preparing theater resumes, how
best to practice and more. Discus-
sions will also include the busi-
ness of show business, the
Philadelphia theater scene and a
question-and-answer session.
Requests to participate as one
of the eight are due no later than
Wednesday, Jan. 18, and should be
emailed to Karen@Voorheesthe
atre.org .
Please include your name,
age/grade, email address and a
phone number. Anyone who
would like to just watch the pro-
gram is encouraged to do so, but
we still need you to send us your
name and age to be added to the
list.

aged to apply for the regional
honor. Kemery was ranked on a
point-based system of criteria,
which ranked coaching, teaching,
extra-curricular and community
awards and contributions.
Eastern Athletic Director Phil
Smart said he was excited to hear
that Kemery was being awarded
for his impact on tennis and the
community at the school.
Georges contributions to
Easterns tennis and athletic pro-
gram make him truly deserving
of this recognition, Smart said.
Kemery said his tennis squads
are well supported by the Eastern
community and said he is proud
to work with the rest of the staff.
I am humbled and proud of
receiving this award and for the
opportunity to bring South Jer-
sey tennis and Eastern athletics
some more regional recognition,
Kemery said. Easterns coaching
staff is packed each season with
some of the winningest, most
dedicated and most dynamic peo-
ple in the region.
Kemery credits part of his
coaching recognition to the team
he leads. Kemery keeps about 30
students on his tennis roster,
which creates camaraderie
among teammates.
Im blessed to have well-man-
nered guys that are competitive
and focused to use each match as
a step to a larger goal whether it
be conference, group or sectional
crowns. My guys are all really
close, Kemery said. Team busi-
ness, attitudes and the like, are
dealt with by my senior and jun-
ior captains first, then the coach-
ing staff, if necessary. Autonomy
is the key with the guys, because
if they know they command their
team, they can command their
destiny in the season equally as
well.
Parents, athletes and other
coaches also play into Kemerys
recognition, he said.
This recognition is only made
possible by that support system,
he said. I share this designation
with my players, their parents,
my AD and my assistant coach,
Kevin Farrow.
The teams 2011 season was in-
dicative of how committed the
players are on the team, Kemery
said. He hopes for yet another
winning season this year.
As the seventh seed in the
state tournament, beating the 1, 2
and 3 seeds to secure our Group 4
sectional title last season was an
unexpected improbability for
many, but was an undeniable fact
for my guys. In January 2011, I en-
couraged my guys to not only ex-
ceed the low expectations put on
them due to graduation and pre-
season ranking, but to exceed
their own personal expectations
and to raise a few eyebrows in
South Jersey, Kemery said.
As a coach, having your play-
ers execute with such precision
in June, the directions from our
first preseason interest meeting
in January, is an exceptional feel-
ing.

H
ad things not changed, right
now presidential hopefuls
would be gearing up for New
Jerseys Feb. 7 primary election. They
would have, in theory, been canvassing
the state, spending big dollars and oth-
erwise putting the state in the spot-
light similar to what happens in
Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina
and Florida early in the primary
process.
But, last year, the state moved the
primary date back to June. June 5, to
be exact.
Now, you might be wondering
why the state would do such a thing.
Wouldnt it be grand to have CNN and
Fox News trucks and reporters all
over the place while the hopefuls
shook hands at diners and attempted
to navigate traffic circles?
Not really. Not if the costs out-
weighed the benefits.
And, in this case, the costs were too
much to handle.
The first problem was that the polit-
ical parties were not happy when a
bunch of states decided that earlier
was better when it came to holding
primaries and caucuses. The parties
kind of like the way things are now,
with Iowa first, New Hampshire sec-
ond, etc. So, when New Jersey and
other states started to make noise
about moving their dates, the parties
took exception and threatened to
whack the number of delegates and do
other mean things.
Second, the February election
would be a second primary election
for the state, as it still would have had
one in June. Elections cost money. Mil-
lions of dollars. Why not save that
money and just hold one election, in
June?
Who knows? Maybe the late election
one day will prove to be a benefit.
Maybe the race wont be over after
Super Tuesday. Maybe well get all
of the attention and campaign dollars.
Or not. Either way, lets give the
state pols some credit for doing the
wise thing this time around.
Sometimes later is better
Moving the presidential primary back to June made sense (and cents)
See you in June
The states decision to move our pres-
idential primary to June was a practi-
cal one. The parties arent mad and
taxpayers will end up saving millions
of dollars.

Dont let anyone tell you the Winter Clas-
sic Alumni Game is for old, washed up
players whove passed their prime. So what
if half the roster is eligible to be card-car-

these guys brought their A-game.
Philadelphia Flyers alumni defeated
their mature New York Rangers counter-
parts in winning fashion, 3-1, at the
matchup held outdoors that day at Citizens

in time for both players and fans alike. But
for one Winter Classic alumni participant,
the game meant much more.

Ive always been fascinated with
standup comedy. One of the earliest memo-
ries of standup I have is when Comedy
Central debuted in the early 90s and I
caught The Amazing Jonathan special
(Lounge Lizards anyone) and became infat-

living? Be filthy on stage, make fun of cus-
tomers who bought tickets and still be
beloved?

The rash of scrap metal thefts around
the region reached an insane apex last year
when hundreds of military grave markers
were stolen from cemeteries in South Jer-

Three women have been indicted in the
thefts, and the scrapyard dealer was hon-

David A. Berg, M.D., recently
joined the surgical team at LMA
Surgical Associates, a part of
Lourdes Medical Associates.
Berg specializes in colorectal
surgery with special interests in
benign anorectal disease, diver-
ticular disease, colonoscopy, en-
dorectal ultrasound and laparo-
scopic colon surgery.
Prior to his appointment at
Lourdes, Berg served as an at-
tending surgeon at Surgical Spe-
cialists of New Jersey in Cherry
Hill.
Berg graduated from Tufts Uni-
versity School of Medicine in
Boston in 2001.
From 2001 to 2008, he under-
went residency training in gener-
al surgery at Temple University
Hospital in Philadelphia, where
he spent two years doing surgical
research on hemorrhagic shock,
the inflammatory response to
trauma, gastrointestinal motility
and surgical simulation.
Berg currently lives in
Voorhees with his wife and two
children.

As we welcome 2012, we should
take one last moment to reflect on
2011:
On May 15, the Voorhees Town
Center was born. With the move
of our Town Hall into the
Voorhees Town Center complex
as well as the opening of restau-
rants like the Firecreek Grill and
Doghouse Cafe, the area is now
becoming the downtown we
never had.
The Virtua Medical Campus of-
ficially opened on May 22 when
all patients were safely and effi-
ciently moved from the old facili-
ty to the new one. The new hospi-
tal has brought 1,000 new jobs to
Voorhees in addition to a $10 mil-
lion sewer improvement.
Voorhees five-year road pro-
gram continued with the
repaving of Victor Blvd.,
Franklin Dr., Abbey Rd., Foxton
Ct. and Harwood Dr. New side-
walks were installed along Cen-
tennial Blvd. from Main St. to
Connolly Park and on Haddon-
field-Berlin Rd. from Lions Gate
to Eagle Plaza.
Improvements were made to
our parks and athletics fields, in-
cluding a new turf field at the Ra-
binowitz Baseball Complex as
well as new dugouts.
Voorhees Township introduced
our new website in October, al-
lowing us to share more informa-
tion with our residents and mak-
ing access to Township informa-
tion more user friendly.
Voorhees continued a partner-
ship with Rutgers University and
VECEF to study the 37-acre
Voorhees Environmental Park
(former Buzby Landfill), to make
it a community destination.
On Dec. 29, Voorhees continued
with an aggressive open space
preservation program when 20
acres of land were purchased in
the Ashland section of our com-
munity. Voorhees partnered with
the State of New Jersey and the
County of Camden in protecting
this land now known as Ashland
Woods. Since 2003, Voorhees has
preserved 223 acres of land for
open space.
Voorhees continued with an ag-
gressive shared services pro-
gram, partnering with 7 other
municipalities to form the largest
shared services coalition in South
Jersey. The agreement will save
Voorhees approximately $138,000
in trash disposal fees. Voorhees
also merged into the County dis-
patch system, saving $400,000 a
year. The Township formed an
agreement with an energy com-
pany to buy utilities directly from
the provider, saving approximate-
ly $125,000 per year. We entered
an agreement with Eastern Re-
gional High School for both snow
removal and trash removal and
will continue our leaf collection
agreement with Gibbsboro.
Voorhees will engage in only sen-
sible shared services agreements.
We will not be part of the pro-
posed county-wide police force.
Efforts to create additional
Voorhees revenue continued with
our membership in
www.voorheesprospector.com, al-
lowing available commercial
property to be advertised over the
internet all over the world. Over
the last two years, this site had
over 150,000 hits. Voorhees con-

MAYORS MESSAGE
please see TOWNSHIP, page 11
A final look back at 2011
tinued in the State program Live
Where You Work to encourage
those who work in Voorhees to
live here. A partnership contin-
ued between the Economic Devel-
opment Committee and the
Voorhees Business Association
with a Business Retention Task
Force to help our local businesses
continue to thrive.
The Annual Summer Series at
Connolly Park was bigger and
better than ever. Our four con-
certs included Parrott Beach,
Strawberry Fields: A Tribute
to the Beatles and Oh What a
Night!.
On Oct. 15, the Voorhees Town-
ship Citizens Cultural and Diver-
sity Advisory Committee spon-
sored International Day 2011.
The event included international
foods and multicultural displays
to celebrate and embrace our
communitys diversity.
Voorhees partnered with our
schools to work against charter
schools in our Township. While
charter schools may be appropri-
ate for low performing school dis-
tricts, our schools provide the
highest quality education to our
students.
Voorhees said goodbye to a
beloved member of our family
when John Maurer, director of
Public Works, passed at the age of
58.
John started working in
Voorhees in 1990 as a laborer. He
was then promoted to head of our
parks and ultimately became the
director of Public Works.
Johns passion was the mainte-
nance and preservation of our
open space parcels and our recre-
ation complexes.
John was responsible for the
conversion of the former Lafferty
Asphalt Plant to our 49-acre oasis
known as Connolly Park.
Voorhees is a better place because
of John Maurer.
With the addition of such new
businesses as Sony Music Hold-
ings, Virtua, Magellan Hill Tech-
nologies and the expansion of
American Water, over 1,600 new
jobs came to Voorhees in 2011.
Thank you for giving me the
privilege of serving as Mayor for
2011 and I will embrace the honor
again in 2012.
On behalf of the Township
Committee, we look forward to
another successful year.
