INTERNATIONAL SEMINAR

CREATIVE STRATEGIES FOR TEACHING ENGLISH

English Department Semarang State University 6 June 2009

INTRODUCTION
New ideas and thoughts in English language teaching and learning have inspired many of us to rethink and re-evaluate the current practices in the delivery and presentation of materials to the students in the classroom. In addition, the introduction of the genre-based approach, within the realm of Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) to the teaching of English in Indonesia especially in the English curriculum for Junior and Senior High Schools have also encouraged us to explore various strategies and techniques that will engage the learners in communication in order to allow them to develop their communicative competence. The principles of Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) apply equally to face-to-face oral communication, reading and writing activities that involve readers and writers engaged in the interpretation, expression, and negotiation of meaning. To achieve the goals of Communicative Language Teaching (CLT), it is important for the teachers to find various new, innovative, and creative techniques and strategies for English language teaching both inside and outside the classroom. In this way, teachers will be able to facilitate the students to acquire their communicative competence.

OBJECTIVES
To explore various innovative strategies for teaching English To share creative techniques for teaching various skills and materials to classroom contexts To discuss and find new ideas on activities, exercises, and suggestions in the teaching of English in EFL setting in Indonesia.
