Introduction As a coaching staff, we must constantly attempt to grow and improve. In order to do this, each member of the staff must know exactly what is expected of him. This handbook is designed to be a complete guide to our philosophy, policies, and approach to the game of football. Hopefully, this handbook will answer any question you may have before it is asked. We have the makings of a fine football program, and our program will improve as time passes. The quality of our football program will begin with the quality and dedication of our coaching staff. Our handbook is designed to assist us in developing an outstanding and united football coaching staff. As with any handbook or manual, this information is only valuable if it is understood and applied by the members of our coaching staff. As a member of the staff, you are expected to read this manual thoroughly and understand its contents. Take your time and read all of the information in this handbook. Make written notes of any questions and/or concerns. We will discuss this information as well as address your concerns and questions as we prepare for fall practice.

Arsenal Technical High School, and the Indianapolis Public Schools, exists to develop
the academic, spiritual, physical, and social potential of its students within a community rooted in the desire of good education and sound teaching, traditions, and moral values. As an extension of the family, we seek to instill feelings of self-worth and confidence in our students, while challenging them to value each individual in society and to cultivate the ideal of service. We believe that by embracing a diverse population, individual differences and abilities, we build a true community that enables us to prepare our students for the immediate challenges of college or the work place, and a life-long commitment to faith, education, leadership, and service. As a program, we are very proud of our philosophy of football. All coaches must be aware of this philosophy and continually emphasize these points in their daily dealings with their players. While our entire philosophy of football is contained in the following pages, three principles are of the highest priority and must be emphasized accordingly: 1. We prepare to defeat and expect to defeat every opponent that we encounter. 2. We assist each Arsenal Tech Football team member in reaching their full potential as a people, as students, and as athletes. 3. The Arsenal Tech Football Program is a family.

THE VALUE OF COACHING IN FOOTBALL
1. Football is a morale game. Coaching can have a positive effect on morale. 2. Football games are won through execution. Execution is achieved through excellence in the fundamental aspects of the game. Coaching can improve fundamentals and thereby, execution. 3. Football strategy can have an effect on the outcome of the game. When two fundamentally equal football teams meet, strategy can make the difference. Coaches have the greatest effect on football strategy. 4. Football is a game that is in many ways representative of life. Lessons learned in football can have an impact on the quality of life enjoyed by people who play the game. Coaching can teach these lessons.

THE FOUR STAGES OF LEARNING 1. UNCONSCIOUS INCOMPETENCE: The learner at this stage is unable to perform at an acceptable level and unaware that he is incompetent. 2. CONSCIOUS INCOMPETENCE: The learner remains unable to perform but acquires an awareness of his shortcomings. 3. CONSCIOUS COMPETENCE: The learner becomes competent (at least by minimum standards). However, he must think his way through each step or task necessary for success. 4. UNCONSCIOUS COMPETENCE: The learner is now able to function at a high level without thinking about each task.

GENERAL COACHING EXPECTATIONS

1. 2. 3. Love our players. Be demanding on our players and yourself. Be on time. This includes practice, all meetings, game night, Saturday staff meetings. A. PRACTICEWe will begin 25 minutes after the final school bell. Coaches are to be on the field by the time we begin stretching. B. GAME NIGHTCoaches should arrive 20 minutes before our scheduled team meetings; coaches are expected to travel to and from games with the team; all coaches are to participate in pre-game chapel services and to be present during post-game comments and prayer; coaches must be present at ATHS for approximately 30 minutes after post-game comments and prayer. C. Due to the unique makeup of our staff, there will be times when coaches cannot be present or may need to be late because of commitments to their jobs. This will be especially true for our lay coaches. Clear and frequent communication is necessary to insure that the head coach is aware of any difficulty that a lay coach may have. If you are unable to make practice on time, contact Coach Lloyd ahead of time. Enforce the concept of being inside the track on time. All position coaches are expected to grade the performance of every player in every game in a detailed and thorough fashion. A. Defensive coaches will grade their players after the game in a group session. B. Offensive coaches will grade their players independently before meeting with the players on Saturday morning to review the film. This grading must be completed by 9 a.m. When you reach the practice field, set up your drills. If necessary, you may require your position group players to be on the field early for special instructions. If you jump a player during practice, talk to him after practice.

8. All coaches must have a completed practice plan in their possession before going to the field. The amount of time for each segment will be determined by the head coach or coordinator. This is a general organizational plan for you to follow. All coaches must plan and organize individual drills for each segment that is not a team segment.

script, a watch, and a whistle.
10. After practice, spend time in the locker room with the players. 11. Do not accept less than the best effort of your players at practice. If one of your athletes is not giving his best, find out why. 12. Force your players to encourage others and recognize great effort. 13. Never argue with another coach on the field. 14. Do not use profanity in front of the players. We expect discipline from our players, and we will expect nothing less from ourselves. 15. Utilize consistent vocabulary. All coaches should use the same terms to describe techniques, formations, and responsibilities. 16. Give the players secrets and nuances to help them. They will respond to you best if they are convinced that you can and will help them reach their full potential. They play and practice the hardest when they know that you really care for them. 17. Potential means nothing. We are looking for performers with attitude and hustle. 18. Always make your players finish drills. Utilize a whistle. 19. Pay strict attention to the practice plan times. We cannot waste any time switching stations. Synchronize your watch with the clock in the office. It is the job of the coaches to motivate the players and develop the team; all coaches must develop their personal motivational skills. 21. I have come to a frightening conclusion. I am the decisive element in the classroom, gym, or on the field. It is my personal approach that creates the climate. It is my daily mood that makes the weather. As a coach, I possess tremendous power to make a childs life miserable or joyous. I can be the tool of torture or an instrument of inspiration. I can humiliate or humor, hurt or heal.
In all situations, it is my response that decides whether a crisis will be escalated or deescalated and a child humanized or de-humanized.

As a member of the ARSENAL TECH FOOTBALL COACHING STAFF, the Arsenal Tech Football Coach belongs to a special group of individuals. As a group, the staff exists for the sole purpose of assisting the student members of the Arsenal Tech Football Family in reaching their full potential. Our efforts will be directed at developing the best young people possible, the best students possible, and then the best football players possible. I believe that our staff possesses the following qualities. Obviously, from one coach to another, some of these qualities are more developed than others. As a group and collectively, we must continually strive to maximize and develop these qualities in order to fulfill our mission. 1. The Arsenal Tech Football Coach loves the players and shows that love. He treats every player with respect, dignity, and compassion. 2. COACHING PRINCIPLES
1. Blocking and tackling are the two most important fundamentals of the game of football. Teach them everyday. 2. Discipline must be emphasized at all times on and off the field. 3. Always be fully prepared for a days work before you go on the field. 4. Check after practice: attitude, effort, and accomplishment of each player. 5. Spend time on and off the field with freshmen and sophomores our inexperienced players they are our future. 6. Morale is our most important objective. It starts with you and is largely stimulated by individual effort 7. To do a good job, you must teach physical aggressiveness (toughness) as well as technique. 8. Never loaf or allow players to loaf in any football activity if too tired, rest Be sure to give plenty of liquids. 9. Use professional courtesy, but never fail to talk with any coach involved, about anything that will aid our football team. 10. Seeing a mistake does not constitute coaching. What matters most is knowing why it happened, how it happened, and how it can be corrected. Of course, even this information is useless if it cannot be effectively communicated to the player. When correcting, focus on why it happened, how it happened, and how it can be corrected. 11. Each assistant coach is responsible for the mistakes of his position players. The head coach is responsible for the mistakes of every player and all assistant coaches. 12. Perform actions on the fieldnot talk. Lectures are for the meeting room. 13. THE ARSENAL TECH FOOTBALL PRACTICE PHILOSOPHY 1. Practice begins at the corner of the east gym for players and coaches. 2. Practice begins on time for players and coaches. 3. We will hustle everywhere we go. Make your group the best. 4. We will be enthusiastic. Make your group the best 5. Practice will be conducted at a fast tempo. However, walk-through segments will be scheduled from time to time. 6. All players will be actively involved in practice at all times. 7. After the first two weeks of practice, our heavy hitting days will be Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. 8. During the season Monday and Thursday will be non-hitting days. 9. Hitting will normally occur during technique and team periods. 10. Team periods will be done against dummies and live. 11. Thursday practice will conclude by 5:30. 12. There are only two ways to do anything the right way and the wrong way. Do things the right way. 13. Be prepared have a great practice plan use variation. 14. Stay on time. 15. Conditioning will come in your technique work if you force your players to hustle. Demand that they jog back to the end of the line upon completing a drill. 16. Coach with intensity and your players will play with intensity.
17. Practice situations in your drills. Make your technique drills actually simulate game situations. 18. Help each other. Volunteer to help other coaches with projects for which they are responsible.

19. Sell toughness to the players. Build confidence by being positive. 20. Preach precision in execution from day one. 21. Say something positive to each of your players every day. 22. Make sure that all drills relate directly to Titan Football offense, defense, or special teams. Do not just run a drill for the sake of running it. 23. If possible, match varsity players against others of comparable ability in contact drills. 24. Be actively coaching during special team segments. If you are not directly involved in the special team being practiced, find one or more of your players who are not involved and work with him/them on some technique related to your position. 25. The use of profanity is prohibited on the field. 26. All practices will end with the school song and prayer.

PRE-SEASON CAMP PRINCIPLES

1. Pre-season camp will be demanding on players and coaches. 2. Players will not be released to leave campus in between practices they will be asked to stay on campus for the remainder of the campus. 3. Players will be exposed to as much of our offensive, defensive, and special teams packages as possible during pre-season camp. 4. Pre-season camp will focus on the correct teaching and repetition of fundamentals. 5. Conditioning will be emphasized during pre-season camp. 6. Two-a-day practice schedule (tentative) 3 p.m. meetings 4:45 specialists and pre-practice 5:05 Warm up 5:25 special teams 5:55 practice 6:35 lifting 7:30 dinner 8:30 break 9:15 specialists and pre-practice 9:45 flex 10:05 special teams 10:25 practice 11:15 dismissal 12:00 in the bed 7. All players must weigh in before 3 p.m. meeting, weigh out after SSC, weigh in again before 9 p.m. practice, and weigh out after 11:15 dismissal. Coaches must check players weight differences daily for safety concerns. 8. All taping and injury treatment must occur before meetings. Players will come to all meetings dressed in the practice attire for the upcoming session. 9. Sophomores are responsible for getting equipment to and from the field. 10. Starters will be named at the end of pre-season camp (Saturday following scrimmage).

1. Practice will begin 45 minutes after final school bell. 2. Coaches must be on the field before practice begins one coach will have locker room duty. 3. Players are on time if they are across the red line when the whistle blows to begin the specialist and pre-practice segment 4. THE ARSENAL TECH FOOTBALL ACADEMIC PROGRAM

Philosophy: All students at Arsenal Tech High School are capable of passing all classes offered at Arsenal Tech High School. As an extension of the school, the football program must ensure that all of its members receive a quality education. The quality of education received by an athlete is directly related to the efforts of the student-athlete. In the classroom as in football, the secret is effort. Failure is not an option. Goal of the Academic Mentoring Program: It is the goal of this program that all football student-athletes achieve their full potential as students. More specifically, it is the goal of the program that all student-athletes have as many viable options as possible available to them when making their college choice. Our objective is that no football student-athlete achieve a grade lower than a C in any class. Procedure: o Coach Butcher will serve as our Academic Program Supervisor. o Each student-athlete will be assigned to a member of the football coaching staff. o At the beginning of a football grade check week, the student-athlete will attain a grade check form. Forms will be available in the coaches office, in Coach Lloyd's Office, and in Coach Butchers office. By the end of the school week, the student-athlete will return the completed grade check form to the coaches office. The form must be completed by all of the studentathletes teachers. Student-athletes should attempt to have each teacher complete the form as early in the week as possible. o Coach Butcher will check each form personally and sort the forms to be picked up by each assistant coach over the weekend. o Each assistant coach will review the forms of his players and contact each player about goals, action plans, and corrective measures necessary for academic success.
o When school assessment tools are utilized (progress reports and report cards), Coach Lloyd will attain these results by the end of the designated week. Coaches should come to the coaches office to attain the results for the players he is responsible for.

Responsibilities of Each Student -Athlete: o Establish and maintain a good relationship with each teacher o Do all of the work all of the time o Pick up a grade form every scheduled Monday o o o o Ask each teacher politely before class to complete their section of the form Thank the teacher for completing the form Return the completed form to the coaches office each scheduled Friday after school Contact the mentoring coach if no contact has been made by Monday following a grade check o Give his best effort in every class Responsibilities of Each Coach o Pick up grade check forms for your student-athletes by Sunday following a scheduled grade check o Contact each student-athlete that the coach is responsible for by Monday following a scheduled grade check each time a grade check is administered, the student-athlete should receive a call; periodically, each coach is also encouraged to write notes to any studentathlete in need of encouragement as well as any student-athlete worthy of recognition o Speak with the parent(s) of each student-athlete regarding the progress of the student-athlete o Develop appropriate study strategies for each student-athlete o Notify Coach Butcher if any additional resources are necessary for a studentathlete; whenever necessary, Coach Butcher will notify Coach Lloyd o Recommend any deserving student-athlete for Football Student-Athlete of the Quarter to Coach Riley; this recognition is to be awarded to the student-athlete demonstrating the best academic effort and attitude throughout the quarter (not necessarily the student-athlete with the highest grades) o Return any grade report to the file for each student-athlete in the coaches office Study Table: o Study tables will be conducted every Tuesday and Thursday after school from 2:45 p.m.3:30 p.m.; study table will be conducted throughout the season. o All varsity and junior varsity players and student assistants will attend study table beginning when the school year begins. At the time of quarter one-progress reports, varsity and junior varsity players, and student assistants with no grades lower than a C will be released from attending study table. At this time, released members of the team may voluntarily attend any study

ASSISTANT COACH RELATIONSHIPS WITH PARENTS

1. Work to make all parents friends of the program. 2. In all matters attempt to speak with parents face to face. 3. Loyalty to the program comes first always build the staff up to parents. 4. Never discuss any other player other than the son of the parent you are dealing with. 5. Parent Meetings: Parent meetings will occur before the season. A meeting for parents of junior team members will take place Tuesday after the conclusion of the season. This meeting will be for the purpose of the giving of information regarding the college athletics recruiting process. Returning parents will meet in mid-June. Freshman parents will meet the morning of the annual Blue and White scrimmage. All varsity coaches are expected to attend the returning players meeting. All freshman coaches are expected to attend the freshman meeting.

ASSISTANT COACH EXPECFATIONS OF THE HEAD COACH

1. Loyalty at all times 2. Support at all times 3. Friendship 4. Intensity and enthusiasm at practice 5. Fierce competitiveness on game days A. On game day, I prefer to be quiet before the game. While there can certainly be conversation in the coaches office, I would ask that it be subdued in nature. I plan to be focusing on the upcoming game. B. I would like to apologize in advance for any situation that may arise on game night My focus and intensity on game night will be such that I may say something or do something that may come across as disgust or displeasure with a coach or player. My primary concern on game night is obviously the performance of the team on the field. Due to this concern and my tendency to get wrapped up in the action, occasionally I have been known to ignore normal rules of professionalism, courtesy, and politeness. If you ever personally experience a situation like this, please do not take it personally. C. After a loss, I am not an easy person to deal with. I promise that I will recover by Saturday morning and be ready to prepare for our next opponent by Sunday. D. If the area that you are responsible for does not perform well, I may make a comment in the heat of battle. Please accept that just as the overall team performance is my responsibility, the play of your position players is your responsibility. Make certain that you prepare your position players to the best of your ability. 7.Preparation 8.Hard work 9.Leadership

INJURIES
1. The trainer will make all decisions concerning a players ability to participate in games and practice. With the approval of the head coach, an individual players practice or game role may be restricted to less than recommended by the trainer. However, a players game or practice role will never exceed the recommendation of the trainer. 2. Any injury to a player should be followed up with a phone call that evening from the coach responsible for that players position group. Make certain that the parents of the player and the player know that you are concerned about the physical welfare of the player. 3. Once you have called the player and his parents, call the head coach (4571096) and inform him of the status of the injury.

COACHES ATTIRE
1. PRACTICE all coaches will be expected to wear shorts or sweats, a Titans football tshirt, coachs shirt, sweatshirt, or jacket, as well as shoes and socks. Only Arsenal Tech Football apparel may be worn to practice by coaches. All coaches must also wear a whistle. 2. GAME DAYall coaches must be attired in game dress when they arrive at the coaches office before the game. All coaches should remain in this attire at the team meal. 3. GAME NIGHT Titans football coaches will wear a Titans football coaching shirt and khaki slacks, white socks, and coaching shoes on game nights (including JV games). On varsity game nights, coaches should be in this attire when they arrive at Arsenal Tech. All coaches are expected to be present for the team meetings. Obviously, as the weather turns colder, additional clothing will be added. 4. BANQUETOn the night of our football banquet, all Titan football coaches will wear slacks, dress shirt, necktie, and a sport coat The same attire is expected if any coach attends any type of banquet or award ceremony honoring any of our players, past players, coaches, or past coaches.

COACHING RELATIONSHIPS WITHIN THE STAFF

1. There can only be one head coach and the head coach will make final decisions. 2. Disputes between coaches will never occur in front of the squad. We can argue in our meetings. We will leave all meetings united. if we cannot reach agreement, we will stay until we are united. 3. Be on time (early). 4. Techniques and schemes of offense and defense must be agreed upon by the staff. 5. There is no excuse for any coach not knowing the overall offensive, defensive, and special team schemes of Arsenal Tech Football. 6. Read and know the entire scouting report 7. On the field, coach your group only. if you see something on the field that you believe will improve the team, suggest it to the coach in charge at the appropriate time (not on the field). 8. If another coach comes to you off of the field with a suggestion or question about football technique related to your position or responsibility, do not take it as a personal attack. Listen with an open mind, question the coach if you do not understand his point, and consider the point In a group meeting session, do not take offense if your position or area of responsibility is criticized in any fashion. 9. Second-guessing of any member of the coaching staff in a public setting is prohibited. We are all in this together. 10. At times, we will gather in a social setting. Whenever possible, we would love for you to attend. 11. All members of the coaching staff will clean up after themselves in the coaches
office. Do not leave any trash in the coaches office. Put supplies and coaches office materials back where they belong.

Praise goes much further than criticism. Push, drive, enthusiasm, and ownership must begin with you.
Never knock the players on our team they are all we have. Build the players and coaches up at every opportunity. Most players have many friends. They need a coach who will serve as a role model and offer good positive discipline. Be consistent dont be moody. Player performance will be evaluated for every player every day. Each coach will chart the practice performance of each of his players with a grade of + or on a chart in the coaches office after every practice. Censure and correction must not be made personal. The players must feel that you are behind them. Even in a meeting setting among coaches, a coach must site something positive about any member of the team before he may discuss the limitations or shortcomings of the team member. We are always healthy. No matter who you are talking to coaches, players, parents, fans, administrators, your family, or our opponents we never have an injury problem. Say something positive to every one of your position players every day. All coaches are encouraged to have players to your home, out for pizza, out to lunch, etc. Obviously this is not a requirement. If you ever have a desire to gather with players out of season, check with Coach Lloyd about possible IHSAA policies that apply.

TITAN FOOTBALL ADDITIONAL TIME COMMITMENTS
1. Summer football camp. Each teacher-coach will be required to work at the Arsenal Tech Lineman Football Camp. Lay coaches are encouraged to work our camp as well, although, in some cases, it is understood that this is not possible.
2. ARSENAL TECH HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL CAMP The camp that we conduct for our own players will be staffed by all of our coaches. 3. SUMMER AND OFF-SEASON SPEED, STRENGTH, AND CONDITIONING WORKOUTS Each coach should make an effort to attend part of a workout at least every three weeks. All coaches are asked to try to be available for Speed, Strength, and Conditioning testing sessions. All coaches must attend the Senior Challenge workouts. 4. ARSENAL TECH FOOTBALL COOKOUT: Saturday, July 31 5. COACHES RETREAT: TBA 6. PARENT MEETINGS: Varsity coaches should attend meeting for returning parents; freshman coaches should attend meeting for freshman parents. 7. SENIOR RETREAT: All coaches are welcome to be involved. 8. COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECTS: All coaches are encouraged to attend. 9. FUNDRAISERS Each coach will be responsible for participation in a fundraising project. 10. CLINICSEach coach is encouraged to attend as many clinics as possible. At the present time, the football budget has funds available for this purpose. See Coach Lloyd if you wish to attend any clinic for which there is a charge. All coaches will be members of the Indiana Football Coaches Association and are encouraged to attend as many region meetings as possible as well as the state clinic (in March). Coordinators and the head coach will be members of the American Football Coaches Association (any assistant coach wishing to be involved in this association should see Coach Lloyd). 11. STAFF MEETINGSout of season. We will meet monthly in December, January, and February. In March, we will begin a normal schedule of meetings that will occur approximately every two weeks in March, April, and May. In June and July, we will meet

weekly.
12. BANQUETAll coaches are expected to attend the Arsenal Tech Fall Sport Awards Banquet and the Titan Football Banquet Concerning the Titan Football Banquet, expect to arrive one hour early and stay after until the facility is straightened up. The Titan Football Banquet will be held on the first Saturday of December.
13.ARSENAL TECH FOOTBALL COACHES ASSOCIATIONAll coaches are members of this association. Meetings will be held quarterly and all coaches are expected to attend each meeting. At each meeting, an Arsenal Tech coach will speak for approximately 45 minutes on his coaching style. 14.ARSENAL TECH FEEDER SCHOOL GAMES Each coach will be assigned to a team and attend every game that his team plays. Always wear Arsenal Tech Football game attire. Always be present on the side of the team you are responsible for. Arrive in time for pre-game warm-ups, at least periodically. Introduce yourself to the coach at the first game (at an appropriate time). Request a roster and list of addresses and/or phone numbers. Confine your comments to the players to simple greetings and/or words of encouragement or congratulations. If the player or his parents have any questions for you, attempt to answer them; if you do not know the answer, tell them that you will check into their question and call them with the answer or tell them the following week. If any of our Feeder teams are in the Championship game, all coaches will attend. Coach Lloyd and Coach Mickens will determine the game(s) that they will attend on a week-to-week basis. If either is going to attend a game of your team, be available to brief them before that game. Coaches may also attend other sporting events of their assigned teams periodically throughout the year. 15. YEAR-END EQUIPMENT COLLECTION AND INVENTORY
All Arsenal Tech Football Coaches will be required to spend the week after the football season ends in the collection and inventorying of football equipment
Whenever the season ends, we will have a team meeting on the following Monday. Following the Monday meeting, we will inventory all equipment in the football equipment room that was not issued. On Tuesday, we will begin to collect equipment we will collect equipment and inventory it as we go on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. All Freshman coaches will participate in the collection and inventorying of freshmen equipment on Wednesday following the last Freshman game. Any freshman that will continue to participate with the varsity squad through the state playoffs will return their

equipment with the rest of the varsity team.

1. The coaches are the leaders of the team. A coach should never complain that he has no leadership in his group. All he is truly saying is that he is not leading. While it is popular among some coaches to excuse the poor performance of their team by pointing out that the team has no leadership, any coaching staff making this statement is a staff of poor leaders. If the team performs poorly, it is the coachs fault. In order to lead, a coach must set the example. If a coach wants his players to work hard, he must work hard. If a coach wants his players to be enthusiastic, he must be enthusiastic. A coach must expect excellence from himself and from his players. He must be demanding of himself. A coach must always be in control of himself. Great leaders are at their best under pressure. When pressure is applied, what a person really is tends to come to the surface. If a coach thinks that his players need to improve, he should look for ways to improve himself. 2. Trust is the foundation of leadership. Our players will do anything we ask them to do if we know that we care about them; the same will be true for each assistant coach and his position players. If you tell your players that you will do something, do it. Your players are counting on you. Always be prepared and go the extra mile for them.

3. Leadership is about sacrifice. One sacrifice seldom brings success. Sacrifice is an ongoing process, not a one-time payment.
The higher level of leadership people want to reach, the greater the sacrifices they will have to make. Our leadership role on this team is one of service. How can we help? We are not serving our players by being permissive with them. 4. People buy into the leader and then the vision. When people respect someone as a person, they admire him. love him. A coach should treat each player as if he is his son. Just as a loving father would not be abusive to his son, he would also not be permissive with him.
7. The true measure of leadership is influence nothing more, nothing less. Often times, leaders complain that the people in their charge are acting incorrectly. While this is often true, all that the leader is pointing out is that he is leading incorrectly. Our leadership is not measured by what we do, but rather, by what our players do. A coach is not a leader simply because he is a coach. A coach only becomes a leader if he actually coaches. Its not the position that makes the leader; it is the leader that makes the position.
