CASE STUDY: LACK OF ICT FACILITIES IN SCHOOL Introduction My first impression when I was told that I will be placed

at SMK TTDI Jaya was so happy because I had been there before for my group research. In addition I will be with my best friend. Since Ive already know the schools environment, I expected the school is equipped with the latest facilities. Previously, I did not observe the entire school environment but since the school is a new school, I imagined that the students were excellent students that very familiar with all the ICT facilities provided. During school orientation program, I did went to the special room provided such as Dewan Wawasan, Makmal Pintar, Makmal Lestari and other places that really equipped with all the ICT stuff such as LCD screen, projector, notebook or at least a desktop. Hence, I imagined that all the classrooms and labs are also fully provided with the ICT facilities. So, that was my expectation during school orientation program. Lets wait and read what is going to happen in the real life as a teacher in SMK TTDI Jaya. Background SMK TTDI Jaya was a new school that starting the operation at 2001. The senior assistant of the school had giving a briefing about the history and the operation of the school. I was assigned to the afternoon session and will be teaching 2 classes of form 2. The senior assistant also told me that the school still using chalk and blackboard. I was a little bit shocked because how come a new school did not use marker and whiteboard. I just kept the question to myself. Then, each of us needs to see our mentor which is the real teacher for the class that I take over. Well, I will tell about the mentor and the class on the next topic. It will be an interesting story, I guess. Description of how the problem or issue arose Cikgu syawal Anizam was assigned by the afternoon supervisor to be my mentor. He is the real teacher for form 2k which I will be teaching for next twelve weeks. Basically my mentor is a simple person. But, he is a techno person. He

always wanted me to use all the software provided to teach mathematics. So, for the first observation, he wanted me to use the software to teach coordinate but I was not doing according to his wish because I was not really familiar with the use of LCD, projector and so on. Then, I asked his helped to teach me how to use all the stuff. After I was quite expert in using the ICT equipment, I told my students to come to Makmal Pintar because all the classes in SMK TTDI Jaya were not equipped with the ICT facilities. We need to reserve the room such as Makmal Pintar if we want to use all the ICT stuff. So, I told my students to come to Makmal Pintar during the mathematics period. I just waited at the Makmal Pintar but after 15 minutes, there were no students arrived. Then, after 20 minutes I went to the class to see what happened and they were just keep on talking and did their own activities. So the lesson for that day cannot be finished because the students were delaying the time to go to the Makmal Pintar. The problems that occurred here had given some difficulties to the teacher such as: The students were late to the lesson because they need to walk from their classroom to the fully ICT equipped room and sometimes the students will take advantage to walk through the long way rather than used the short cut to the room. The students were used to make noise when they were in the reservation room. Most of the rooms were occupied with the teacher because SMK TTDI Jaya did not have any staffroom. For examples, Makmal Pintar is the room for the maths teacher. So, when the students make noise, they will disturb the teachers which in the room. The next issue is that the condition of the room is not really conducive. I can see that the students are not comfortable since the room is too small. When they are not comfortable, they tend to do their own work rather than focusing on the lesson. The last issue that I really concern is the room reservation. Each teacher need to reserve the room first. The condition is first come first serve. So I

you are planning to use all the projector and LCD screen, you need to do the reservation, if not please prepare plan B. What should I do to overcome the problem? As a trainee we must not ashamed and hesitate to learn. As I was facing such problems mentioned above I went to see my mentor and the afternoon supervisor. implemented. As we know that the students were like to take advantage, we as a teacher must also know their weaknesses. If I am planning to conduct the lesson using the ICT facilities, I will go the their classroom 10 minutes earlier and wait at the outside of the classroom and when they see me they will quickly packed their things and follow me to the ICT rooms. Then, as the students used to make noise, I will prepare something that can capture their interest until they were not able to entertain their friends. I had prepared a presentation with full of animation, and they just like asking me how do you did that? Can you tell me because I want to use it in my frienster. So I just tell them that I will teach them but they need to keep quite and learn first. So they kept their promise and I did teach them at the end of the classes. Then, the setting itself. I think every classroom need to be equipped with the LCD screen and projector. I cannot say much about that. It is just my opinion. Rooms reservation. I will reserve the room for every week. Even though I am not using it. But if the other teacher come and ask to use the room, I will cancel my reservation. Conclusion There are many problems regarding teaching and learning process. But as a teacher we must think creatively and find ways to overcome the problem so that the lesson will be conducted well. I asked for their advice. There are some advices that I had
