NEWS
20 JANUARY 2012
At the time of going to press yesterday morning (Thursday) Platinum Gazette still received telephone calls with people reporting damage caused by the heavy rains of Tuesday and Wednesday. Heavy rains have caused havoc locally and in other areas of Limpopo causing major dams and rivers to overflow. The Provincial Disaster Management Centre says rains, caused by Cyclone Dando, which fell within the areas of Maruleng and Ba-Palaborwa, resulted in some communities in areas like Finale being cut-off as a result of inaccessible roads. Locally some communities was also cut off from the outside world just before the newspaper went to press, notably in the areas of Phiring on the road to Blydepoort and also at Fraaiuitzicht just outside Burgersfort (the Gethlane Lodge area). The Hoedspuit area is the most affected with up to 380 millimeters of rain having been measured. The Blyde Dam is overflowing by 111 percent and Klaserie Dam by 108 percent. The Olifants and Blyde River reported flows of 3118.43 and 688 cubic metres per second, respectively yesterday and the Maruleng Municipal Offices have also been flooded. The Mopani District Management Centre established a joint operational team at Hoedspruit with all relevant role players to coordinate all activities. The MEC for CoGHSTA, Mr Soviet Lekganyane, as political head of the Provincial Disaster Management Centre, called upon all the people of Limpopo to be vigilant and take extra caution. The Provincial Disaster Management Centre is ready to handle any eventuality, he said. He said people should remember that they can report disaster incidents to their district offices or provincial disaster management centre on the toll free number 0800 222 111. The Provincial Disaster Management Centre is continuing with the assessment of the damage. Locally the major towns were eerily quiet as the rain relentlessly came down. Few vehicles were moving in Ohrigstad and Steelpoort, while the taxi ranks in Burgersfort remained very quiet as
people could not access the towns from the villages. Not only did the retail economy took a knock, the roads also started to deteriorate almost as rapidly as the rain came down with massive potholes appearing everywhere within hours. For some learners their first day at school simply did not realise, while farmers all over the area watched as losses grew by the minute. The Chairman of the Watervalsrivier Boereverenigings Management Committee, Mr Lodewyk de Jager, told the newspaper about 200 mm of rain fell in 12 hours in the Burgersfort area. The Waterfalls River flooded heavily and flows into the Spekboom River which burst its banks because of the rain and the fact that sluices af the Lydenburg Dam were opened to safeguard the dam. As a result people at Fraaiuitzicht could still not be reached by Thursday morning. Two damwalls broke, irrigation channels broke and one farmer lost 30 head of cattle in the raging Spekboom. Mr de Jager says irrigation pumps were flooded and that farmers will suffer losses because beans sowed just before the rain will not grow because of too much water. The danger also exist that citrus trees may drown if the wet soil does not drain fast enough, while a bad crop for early citrus cultivars may be expected. Mr de Jager reckons this is a 30 year flood, adding that although damage is suffered, farmers are thankful for the rain. The Chairman of Ohrigstad Boerevereniging, Mr Cor Cross, says 200 mm in 24 hour was measured in the Ohrigstad area with much damage reported to irrigation systems and channels. He also lamented that the young citrus trees may drown and stated that the flooding of cropfields made farming very difficult. Platinum Gazette also photographed a dam wall bursting (page 1) near Ohrigstad and could not reach some of the villages because of flooding by streams and rivers. By Wednesday afternoon when the rain subsided in Burgersfort, people flocked to the bridges around town to view the repective rivers in flood.

Bottom two: sightseeing residents discuss the flooding of the Steelpoort/ Tubatse River at the bridge on the Penge road to Praktiseer on Wednesday afternoon. At this point, the river was already fed by the Spekboom.

Drug and alcohol use by teens is not something to be taken lightly. More teens are in treatment for marijuana (dagga) dependence than for all other illicit drugs combined. A 1998 study by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism reports that if a teen starts to drink at 15, he or she has a 40% chance of alcoholism or alcohol dependence as an adult. What are the effects? Marijuana affects alertness, concentration, perception, co-ordination and reaction time. Regular use of marijuana leads to some changes in the brain that are similar to those caused by cocaine, heroin or alcohol. Most adults acknowledge that drug experimentation by teens is risky and can lead to serious trouble. But some say its only dagga, or its only alcohol, or its a rite of passage. Not anymore. The world has changed, and so have the drugs. Kids are using drugs and alcohol at a much younger age, when their bodies and brains are still developing and more vulnerable to their effects. Drug and alcohol use can lead to many negative consequences, including bad grades, broken friendships, family problems, physical injuries and trouble with the law. Substance use can change the direction of a young persons life physically, emotionally and behaviorally. It can weaken the ability to concentrate and retain information during a teens peak learning years and it can impair judgment, leading to risky decision-making. Experimentation, even with dagga, can also lead to addiction. Not everyone progresses from use to abuse to addiction. How can you tell if your child is using drugs? It is difficult because changes in mood or attitudes, unusual temper outbursts, changes in sleeping habits, changes in hobbies or other interests are common in teens. These changes often signal that something troubling is going on and may involve alcohol or drugs. Negative changes in schoolwork; missing school or declining grades, increased secrecy about possessions or activities. Use of incense, room deodorant or perfume to hide smoke or chemical odors. Subtle changes in conversations with friends, e.g., more secretive, using coded language. New friends, Change in clothing choices new fascination with clothes that highlight drug use. Increase in borrowing money, evidence of drug paraphernalia, such as pipes, rolling papers. Blood-shot eyes or dilated pupils. New use of mouthwash or breath mints to cover-up the smell of alcohol. Missing prescription drugs especially narcotics.

Mr Lovemore Professor Hatlane said: Im enjoying the rain. The rivers are in flood because people must feel and know that water is dangerous. It makes the environment to be good. Is also cools Burgersfort - you know here it is very hot. If we get rain like this once a year, we are blessed. It is not disturbing to me.
Ms Annah Rachoshi and Ms Lydia Maimela had trouble selling their mealies. They said: There was no business today because of the rain. Transport was also a problem.
Mnr Hamilton Groenewald en me. Ashley Groenewald s: Die ren was lekker. dit was n goeie afkoel gewees. By hulle is Johnathan.
Me. Lena Harmzen en Me. Lee-Ann Cameron s: Ren is goed, maar dit was bietjie erg vandag. Dis veral erg met n drieling in die huis wat nie kan buite speel nie.

Mr Thabo Nyambi said: Everything about the rain is ok. Im concerned that it can cause accidents.
Me.
Mr Charles Ramaube, Mr Samson Tau and Mr Lennox Ngwatle said: People struggle. It is tough to get from our home to the busstation and when we get there, we find the transport had already left. Now we had to use our own money to get to work. The rain is also destroying our roads. We cant use our cars on the wet and muddy roads.
