University College offers the career-relevant Environmental Policy an Management program online and on campus, or in a combination of both. Students discover how to work effectively within the environmental field through our approach of blending the fundamentals of environmental science and technology to develop sound environmental policies, apply practical knowledge, and develop an ethical management philosophy. Ideal for busy professionals interested in expanding or acquiring knowledge about natural resources, nuclear power, energy, sustainability, or environmental health and safety, this program offers a hands-on approach in project-oriented classes. Students will earn a better understanding of environmental management, ethics, and policy with an emphasis on: The development of sound policies Practical applications of knowledge An ethical management philosophy Whether pursuing a masters degree or a certificate of advanced study, students discover how to work effectively with and within diverse organizations, businesses, and communities in addressing problems and forging solutions. In addition, students have the advantage of working with instructors who practice in the environmental policy and management field. Many of our instructors head agencies and consulting firms charged with putting knowledge, current practices, and the latest technology to work.

PROGRAM OUTCOMES
Students will be able to: Deve lop and demonstrate a higher awareness of environmental ethics including the responsible exercise of individual judgment and civic responsibility and honesty in dealing with environmental issues Understand the importance and application of the science of ecology and its impact on the cultural and social creation of humans and earths physical and biological system Demonstrate a solid background in business management, environmental policy, public communication and involvement, and work toward the integration of environmental improvement into all organizational business decisions and operations Cl e a rly articulate the roles of legislatures, rule-making bodies, and regulatory enforcement agencies in environmental protection and management Display c riti ca l thinking processes: analyze, understand, and evaluate environmental issues in organizations including educating the public and instituting collaborative decision-making on issues involving the levels of acceptable risks and degree, intensity, and acceptability of environmental protection Apply advanced methods such as life-cycle cost analyses, impact assessment, decision making, science, economics, finance, etc., in an integrative approach to craft informed decisions about complex environmental problems and challenges

A POWERFUL NEW CURRICULUM FOR A NEW PROFESSIONAL ERA

To better prepare our students to thrive in this environment, University College has developed a new vision for what it means to deliver the most effective professional education to working adultsthe Professional Options Curriculum. This powerful curriculum allows you to customize your educational experience while providing the opportunity to explore a strategic in-depth understanding of broader issues that pertain to your area of study. Our program advisory boards, faculty, and community leaders, as well as our extensive research, guide the curriculum to meet the needs of a wide-range of careers. Learn how to handle changing responsibilities and new demands while navigating a new era of professional challenges with the Professional Options Curriculum.

Professional Specialty courses allow students to focus on a specific professional area within the larger industry sector in which they are working or wish to work, and master the skills needed to excel in that area. Students choose a specialty concentration from their degree program (16 credit hours). Further Studies Options allow students to customize their degrees to match their career needs by choosing one of the three course options (12 credit hours). 1. The Internal Option allows students to build on their degree specialty area by taking an additional three courses within their specialty subject area, or to develop a broader perspective within their industry by selecting three courses, usually from another specialty, within their major area. 2. The Related Option provides students whose current or future career path requires a skill set not typically associated with a certain job or major area of study the opportunity to develop that skill set. Students can choose from a predetermined group of subject areas from other majors that have been identified as most likely relating to their major area (e.g., project management). 3. The Flexible Option allows students to acquire introductory skills by choosing from a pool of courses that have been designated for this option. Graduate Research and Writing prepares students for graduate level writing and provides the tools to facilitate effective research (4 credit hours). (Must be taken within first three courses) Capstone Project is the culminating academic endeavor of degree programs at University College. Students explore a problem or issue through a focused study and applied research under the direction of a faculty member (4 credit hours).

PROFESSIONAL OPTIONS DEGREE STRUCTURE


The Master of Applied Science in Environmental Policy and Management requires 48 credit hours (12 courses) of study and a bachelors degree. Requirements Professional Foundations courses help students understand the scope of activity, historical development, future direction and trends, and typical types and roles of organizations that operate within a career field. SPECIALTY CONCENTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATES OF ADVANCED STUDY


As well as masters degree specialties, the following subjects are also available as graduate certificates of advanced study. Graduate certificates allow students to focus on specific subject areasa great way for working professionals to develop new skills and build credentials. Graduate certificates require 24 credit hours (6 courses), and typically take one year to complete. Credits earned through a graduate certificate may apply toward a similar masters degree.

Environmental Health and Safety


Students will learn the management skills and technical knowledge required to become a health and safety manager or officer. Critical instruction is given on environmental health and safety statutes and regulations, management of worker health and safety, environmental management and reporting systems, and business and finance strategy

Energy and Sustainability


This program prepares students to enter the dynamic field of energy and sustainability, which is emerging in importance and popularity. Regulatory and policy issues related to energy development and use, energy finance, and alternative and renewable energy processes will be examined, along with renewable energy sources, plans for integration, and trends within the field of energy. Students will learn how sustainable systems must be considered and developed in the areas of growth, transportation, energy, policy, and business models in order to head off looming environmental, political, and humanitarian problems. This will be accomplished through a comprehensive study of sustainability in the areas of economic development, green building, land use, transportation, and water resources.

Environmental Management
Environmental management and leadership essentials are covered in this program, and students are provided with critical knowledge related to technology, law, and economics as they each pertain to the environment. Students will receive engaging instruction in topics ranging from economics to law, leadership to regulations as they learn how to become effective leaders within the industry.

Environmental Policy
This program provides students with policy analysis and development skills needed to serve as a senior analyst (or manager) within a policy-making organization. Instruction will focus on the economic, social, and political impacts of environmental decisions, as well as topics ranging from economics to law as they relate to environmental policy.

Environmental Assessment of Nuclear Power


Nuclear Regulatory Commissions (NRC) requirements of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) regulations are met by addressing the requirements and topics required for any Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) document, as well as the human health and environmental risks associated with the use of radioactive materials. Students will be prepared with essential knowledge to complete, analyze, and enhance EIS documents. The program will also support the educational infrastructure that

Natural Resource Management


Students in this program are exposed to a breadth of knowledge pertaining to natural resources, water management, zoning, forestry management, mining, and land use issues. Instruction will focus on technology, communication, and management knowledge that is critical to success in the natural resource management field.

COMPLETE YOUR DEGREE IN LESS THAN TWO YEARS!


By taking two classes per quarter for six consecutive quarters, you can complete your degree in about eighteen months. Discuss this option with your academic advisor when finalizing your degree plan.
