4.1 Introduction General requirements for thermal insulation (hot and cold) are given in this Specification. Alternative insulation may be used if the proposed materials and methods satisfy the functional requirements in this specification. The written approval of the Company is necessary. Thermal insulation material and application shall provide a service life to match the facilities 4.2 Insulation Classes Class 1 Heat conservation The purpose is to reduce heat losses and to maintain temperatures for the efficient operation of the process. Class 2 Cold medium conservation The purpose is to maintain low temperature and control heat input to the process. Class 3 Personnel protection Surfaces operating at temperatures above 60 C or below minus 10 C and accessible from normal working areas and access ways shall be guarded by screens or insulation. The protection shall be extended to a distance of not less than 750 mm horizontally or 2000 mm vertically from access walkways and normal working areas. Insulation shall only be used where guards are not practical. Class 4 Fire proofing Passive Fire Protection will be applied to structural steel / building walls only. This includes skirting on pressure vessels. Class 5 Acoustic insulation - 10dB Reduction of noise in the frequency range 500-2000Hz by 10dB Class 6 Acoustic insulation - 20dB Reduction of noise in the frequency range 500-2000Hz by 20dB. Class 7 Acoustic insulation - 30dB Reduction of noise in the frequency range 500-2000Hz by 30dB. Class 8 External condensation and icing protection The purpose is to prevent condensation on piping and equipment with operation below ambient temperature. 4.3 Design
4.3.1 General Piping and equipment shall be insulated according to the insulation class, operating temperature and insulation thickness stated in the P&ID and Data sheets.
Rev. B
Removable insulation for flanges and valves, except for fire proofing and acoustic insulation shall be deluge proof and tailor made. The insulation shall be capable of withstanding removal and reinstallation (e.g. to obtain access for inspection purposes) at relevant locations at least twice a year over the design life without losing its properties. This may be done by the use of foam insulation and Belzona Lag seal or Company approved equal. 4.3.4 Insulation of Instruments and Instrument Tubing For insulation of instruments, insulated cabinets with hinged doors shall be used. For instrument tubing foam insulation sealed with Belzona Lag Seal or Company approved equal shall be used. 4.3.5 Piping Insulation Insulation on long vertical pipe runs shall be supported on rings spaced on 6000 mm maximum centers installed on the piping. Width of rings shall be minimum 1/3 of, and maximum 12 mm less than the insulation thickness. 4.3.6 Metallic Jacketing Flat heads are not allowed on top of vertical vessels. Removable insulation covers shall be provided for vessels heads which are removable. The bottom heads of skirt supported vessels may be covered with flat metallic jacketing. Jacketing for flanges and valves shall be formed such that it sheds water.
Rev. B
Jacketing shall generally be metallic. For insulated piping for all classes except class 5 (fire protection) non metallic jacketing may be used subject to approval by the Company. 4.4 Materials
4.4.1 General Insulation material shall be non-combustible, non-toxic and water-repellent. The materials shall not release toxic or corrosive gases when exposed to fire. No asbestos or asbestos products shall be used. The following material shall only be used for class 1 and 3 with the written approval of the Company: Fiberglass insulation Mineral wool Urethane, polyurethane and polystyrene The following sections described materials which shall be used for insulation. Alternative types of material shall be submitted to the Company for review and approval prior to application. 4.4.2 Alumina Silica Ceramic Fiber Alumina-silica ceramic fiber insulation shall be suitable for class 1 and 3 with service up to 1200 C. 4.4.3 Calcium Silicate Block and preformed calcium silicate piping insulation shall be suitable for class 1 and 3 with service up to 650 C. Calcium silicate piping insulation shall comply with ASTM C533, Specification for Calcium Silicate Block and Pipe Thermal Insulation. 4.4.4 Expanded Perlite Block and preformed expanded perlite pipe insulation shall be suitable for class 1 and 3 with service up to 815 C. Expanded perlite pipe insulation shall comply with ASTM C610, Specification for Expanded Perlite Block and Pipe Thermal Insulation

5.1 General This clause describes the requirements for the following insulation classes: Class 1, Heat conservation. Class 3, Personnel protection. Class 4, Fire proofing. Class 5, 6 and 7, Acoustic insulation. 5.2 Design Guidance for the choice of insulation thicknesses for heat conservation and personnel protection is for calcium silicate given in Table 1 and 2 respectively as below. For cellular glass the guidance is given in Table 3. If a specific temperature has to be maintained, the thickness of the insulation material in question has to be specified in each case. Thickness of fire protection is specified by the safety discipline and stated in the P&ID. 5.3 5.3.1 Installation General
Item7 gives standard details for piping, valve and equipment hot insulation. In the event of discrepancies between the text in this specification and details or dimensions in the Item 7 standard details then the Contractor shall consult the Company as to which detail or dimension shall be used. 5.3.2 Block Insulation for Vessels Insulation for vessel heads shall be curved blocks or standard flat blocks cut to fit. For single layer and outer layer of multi layer shall insulation, banding shall be placed approximately 40 mm on each side of all butt joints with intermediate bands at a maximum of 300 mm centers. The inside layer of multi layer installations shall be banded on at a maximum 450 mm centers. When banding is not practical on irregular surfaces, insulation shall be secured with stainless steel wire. 5.3.3 Blanket Insulation on Vessels The last piece of insulation in each layer shall have a snug fit to make all joints tight. Contraction joints are not required for resilient insulation materials.
