By Kishore Kumar Patnaik The 62 years independence provides ration cards: A celebration with pride The 272 families belonging to Adivasi, Dalit and deprived sections of the society of Nuagaon Gram Panchayat of Nayagarh District felt happy after 62 years of independence could avail rations cards recently with the support of "Mati Maa Mahila Morcha" a female institution. They took a challenge how they can get their legitimate consumer rights since independence. The villagers demanded the ration cards by fulfilling applications, submitting memorandums, organising rallies and approaching concern government authorities following democratic principles. Mr Pravat Sutar, a social activist has involved in the process of awareness on Public Distribution System of Government. The villagers, Sarapanch of Nuagaon, and Panchayat Executive Officer has stated as details given below:Villagers Statements:1. The local dealer of ration card could not able to release their ration cards though the villagers continuously demanding since their birth. 2. The assurances only they have received from BDO/MLA in time of demanding from time to time. 3. They have protected and approached the Civil Supply Inspector, Daspalla to release the Ration Cards but he also gave promises instead of Cards. 4. The villagers query to know from the concern and upper authorities, "who had kept villagers rations cards and for what for such a long time. 5. The villagers wanted to clarify why they have been deprived and who are responsible for this kind of irrigularirties or for scam. 6. Recently the Gram Panchayat has provided ration cards why they have not been alienated to receive these cards. The Block and District Administration could not give us the same before? 7. This is first time that the people of Nuagaon G.P could see and get wheat through PDS distributed by the Gram Panchayat. Statement of Sarapanch, Nuagaon:1. This is first time that we have distributed 12qntls of wheat to the families through PDS during the month of April10 and has planning to keep reserved rations to ensure that the food security of the BPL families during the rainy/cut off period can be ensured because our G.P is situated at the end of Dist. /Block area. Statements of Panchayat Executive Officer:1. There is no special fund in the G.P office to purchase PDS commodities each and every month regularly. 2. The Executive Officer says Rs.1, 10,000/- is required for G.P in a month to withdraw PDS commodities but there is no special fund for this purpose and also cannot divert any amount from other heads of account like IAY. The details of those families received ration cards and some of the pictures related to PDS system mentioned here for further reference. The List of Ration Cards were Distributed by Nuagaon GP of Nayagarh shows the following table with details:-
