Protests in the Year 2011

Preface
"No, no, no, they dont represent us," is a popular Spanish chant at demonstrations. People have realized that their elected politicians do not represent ordinary citizens, but someone else. At the time of writing, enormous unregulated power lies in the hands of global investment and central banks, large corporations, international organizations founded by policy and autocratic military regimes. This year was marked by global youth uprisings. Early in the year, Arabic-speaking nations were shaken by revolutions. Later on, the protests spread especially to the financially indebted countries of the European Mediterranean. Protests have become global when the dissatisfaction moved to North America with the Occupy movement. On 15th October, in organized protests, people took to the streets in over 82 countries in over 950 cities. Reasons for discontent among people and reasons for the emerging protests were quite similar. The main exposed topics were: the power of banks, criticism of the capitalist system, stock speculations, lack of democracy, poor regulations, austerity cuts, corruption of elites, inaccessible education, high unemployment, high personal debts, environmental problems, an increasing gap between the rich and poor, and many others. In military dictatorships, people were upset by high prices of basic foodstuffs, lack of public services, self-ignition protests, armed repressions, exclusion from decision-making, violating of basic human rights and torturing as well as killing of civilians.

Protests in the Year 2011

It seems that governments are incapable of solving these problems on their own. Therefore, people must take matters into their own hands. It is urgent that every citizen becomes an active member of society and gets involved in the decision-making process. The world needs new ideas for resolving class tensions, modern forms of political participation and a new economy that does not exploit people. I invite you to listen to the protesters. Suggest a change, become a change-maker. Tomaz Kure
