K
innelon Dentist Dr.
Peter Brusco chose to
spend his weekend a
little differently on January 7-
8. Along with twelve
others in his field, and
his lovely assistant
Sandy, Dr. Brusco trav-
eled to Fort Dix and
the McGuire Air Force
Base to perform dental
check -ups and clear-
ances for soldiers. For
everything these men
and women have done
for our country, this
was the least I could do
to say thank you, said
Dr. Brusco.
The base set up
several trailers filled
with the latest in den-
tal technology where
the dentists would each see
hundreds and hundreds of
patients. Thousands of ser-
vicemen from the Army and
the Air Force (both enlisted
and in the reserves) would
have the opportunity for a
dental screening. A busy
weekend for the dentists,
but Dr. Brusco was eager
to offer his support to
the troops.
The weekend start-
ed off with some military
training for the dentists.
Believe it or not, there
are strict dental health
classifications that can
stall a soldiers deploy-
ment. Soldiers are rated
from 1 (the best) to 3
(the worst). We even
had to answer affirma-
tive for yes, and nega-
tive for no, explained
Dr. Brusco. It was very
cool. Once everyone
was clear on their mission and
the proper protocol, it was
time to begin.
Through the day, Dr.
Brusco saw about six hundred
soldiers. He and Sandy took
scans and X-Rays, blood pres-
sure readings, and performed
fillings and even extractions.
Those who were rated poorly
according to the militarys
classification system were
given the proper treatment
they needed under the friend-
ly gentle hand of Dr. Brusco.
But what was most fulfilling
were the opportunities to hear
the stories of several of the
soldiers. Many of these men
and women had such tremen-
dous stories. One soldier I had
the opportunity to get to
know had flown as a pilot in
six separate missions! Just
incredible, said a genuinely
impacted Dr. Brusco. He is
already eager to participate in
next months screenings.

more about Dr. Bruscos prac-
tice in Kinnelon or about the

oday, it is universally
accepted, that a
secure retirement
will require a nest-egg of mul-
tiple millions of dollars for
those who intend to one day
be able to live off the rate of
return their retirement port-
folio can generate. It is my
firm belief that people in
their twenties or early thirties
today will require no less than
$10,000,000 as a base portfo-
lio necessary to generate the
income necessary to live
when they reach normal
retirement age of receiving
their full Social Security
check, under current law, age
67. As I have stated in this
publication before, I believe
the target age for a full Social
Security check to be mislead-
ing with the age being post-
poned to at least 75 by the
time the current twenty and
thirty-somethings reach their
sixth decade of life. When I
received my first paycheck at
the age of 14 after securing
my working papers, my
employer explained to me
why I couldnt keep all of the
minimum wage, ($2.35 per
hour) that was paid to me.
He explained it as a contract
between me and the US
Government that was reflect-
ed in the words FICA on my
pay stub. In 51 years he said,
the United States of America
would provide me a pension
check at age 65, based on my
earnings and contributions
into the system. I later found
out that there was no con-
tract at all, not even a prom-
ise, just a deduction each pay-
check with the hope that I
would be able to receive my
personally paid for pension
check in full at age 65. The
Federal Government had
other ideas and they are far
from done in creative post-
ponement and qualification
to receive my retirement ben-
efit package. Needless to say I
was not happy to work for a
promised pay rate, yet have so
many deductions as per law,
that the check I ultimately
received was less than 85% of
what was promised. I could
not place blame on the
employer as the difference
was not being held nor con-
fiscated by him. It was a new
term I learned about for the
first time called the I.R.S.
But, let me not stray too
far from my point; in 1967,
the federal government set
out to measure the impact of
inflation each year and there-
fore needed a starting point.
This was the birth of the CPI,
the Consumer Price Index.
Today, a 1967 dollar is worth
84% less when compared to
1967 or just 16. This means
that a 25 year old in 1967
with a goal to accumulate
$1,000,000 in 44 years would
now need $6,250,000 to have
the same purchasing power in
1967 dollars. In other words,
a million dollars would only
be worth $160,000! By the
same token, if inflation is no
worse or better over the next
44 years than the last 44
years, $10,000,000 is needed
in 44 years to have the same
purchasing power as
$1,600,000 in 2011 dollars.

Guaranteed million dollar retirement plan By Mark Charnet
continued on next page
Assuming a 5% withdrawal
rate, a person my daughters
age today of 23 will need to
be a deca-millionaire to have
an annual income in todays
dollars of $80,000. Would
you feel like a deca-million-
aire with and annual purchas-
ing power of $80,000 in
annual income? I think not!
Last week my father
passed away at age 76. I am
now age 50. We were only 26
years apart and unfortunately
my father was uninsurable for
decades due to many medical
reasons. Had this not been
the case, I could have guaran-
teed myself a million dollar
payday. You see, we all have
the choice to invest capital in
some known vehicle with an
unknown rate of return hold-
ing our breath for the ulti-
mate outcome, a retirement
portfolio. Or we could guar-
antee our financial futures
by buying a multi-million
life insurance policy on Dad,
Mom or a substitute insured,
like one of their brothers or
sisters. Its true that we do
not know when they will die,
nor do we want to know. We
only know that they indeed
will die and if a policy is in
force, there will be that 6 or 7
figure pay-off to the benefici-
ary, in this case it couldve
been me. Depending on the
age and health of the insured,
the premium figures can be
easily determined and com-
pared to the investment alter-
natives available. You would
be hard pressed to find a prop-
erly designed life insurance
policy that could not beat the
same premium invested into
the S+P 500, the Dow Jones
Industrial Average or a myri-
ad of other choices at the
death of the insured. In my
case, I had the annual dollars
to make such a life policy
investment, but, could not
due to the health issues of
both of my parents and nei-
ther had siblings. However,
for the rest of the insurable
public, the underwriting
process may merely be an
inconvenience.
If I had been fortunate
enough to have been able to
insure my Dad for $1,000,000
and be responsible enough to
pay the annual premiums for
the last 20 years, today I
would have another
$1,000,000 added to my net
worth. If he were still alive,
the cash value of the policy
would still be mine and use-
able before his demise. There
is no shame or embarrassment
in this technique to create
wealth or a retirement plan.
Everyone dies and the insur-
ance companies make a profit
selling life insurance to the
people who purchase it to
eventually receive a payout
from it. This folks is a guar-
anteed retirement plan; the
only thing the purchaser
doesnt know is when he or
she will collect it. 76 is too
young an age to die, that is
without question and 50 is
too young an age to collect on
a fathers life insurance policy.
But, if we were to increase
both of our ages to 86 and 60
or 96 and 70 respectively,
both parties would have
ended up winning, Dad with
a longer life, and me with a
more secure and robust retire-
ment nest-egg based upon the
additional years of retirement
plan asset accumulations and
the ultimate death benefit
from the policy.
Though I could not
insure my parents, I did insure
myself for millions for the
benefit of my wifes retire-
ment security as well as for
my childrens inheritance.
Interestingly enough, my
policies are uniquely designed
to benefit me too, should I
live a long life, providing me
with a tax-free income during
my retirement years. This
type of plan is so simple to
understand and easy to imple-
ment, everyone should do it.
Write and ask me for a plan
specifically designed for your
budget and circumstances
that will provide a living ben-
efit for you, a retirement
income for your spouse and a
legacy for your kids. It would
be my pleasure to produce a
proposal for all who just ask
for one, free of charge.

ver since Kate
Middleton walked
down the aisle at
Westminster Abbey in her
fabulous fitted gown and
crystal teardrop earrings,
brides everywhere have been
emulating her classic, elegant
style. Fashion jewelry leader
CAROLEE quickly named its
popular version of the ear-
ring The Kate and at
$32 its within reach of ele-
gant brides in every price
range.
Throughout 2011,
brides from Kate Middleton
to Hollywood celebrities
chose very classic styling for
their jewelry, said Jill Maier,
Vice President of Design at
CAROLEE. Were with
them on that level, and we
have an extensive collection
of beautiful designer crystal
and pearl bridal
jewelry to suit the
tastes of todays
discerning brides.
Ms. Maier has
these tips for
brides who want to
look royal
British or
American style:
Choose crystal
and pearl styles
that are distinctive
yet not over-
whelming in scale
Balance the pro-
portions of your
earrings and neck-
lace. If your ear-
rings and necklace
match, keep
them close in size
with each other.
Or if you choose
major chandelier
earrings, scale down your
necklace or dont wear one
and make the wrist a focal
point.
Bracelets are an important
bridal accessory, and they
look great worn in multiples
stacks of crystal bangles,
mixes of decorative floral
pearl and crystal links, or a
combination of bangles and
links.

T
reatment of muscle
and other soft tissue
injury has tradition-
ally included various types of
massage, acupressure, trigger
point therapy, deep tissue
techniques, heat/cold thera-
py, ultrasound, electrothera-
py and stretch/strengthen
exercise, among others. More
recently, improved under-
standing of neurophysiology
has led to the development
of additional techniques for
soft tissue rehabilitation.
Because chiropractors spe-
cialize in treating neuromus-
culoskeletal conditions,
many chiropractic offices
provide many versions of soft
tissue techniques.
Iscemic compression
and cross friction massage are
soft tissue techniques that
chiropractors have found
particularly effective for both
quick pain relief and rapid
injury rehabilitation. It
involves a specific force or
pressure for a specific time to
the treated area. These tech-
niques are sometimes simul-
taneously combined with
movement and specialized
breathing. What makes this
technique so effective is its
ability to immediately acti-
vate important nerve-muscle
reflexes. When these reflexes
are stimulated the result is
almost instantaneous relax-
ation of a muscle, allowing
the muscle to lengthen. In
many cases, practitioners
have observed rapid decrease
in pain and inflammation,
and marked improvement in
range of motion.
By essentially reset-
ting a muscles resting tone,
these techniques seem to
facilitate better and faster tis-
sue healing. Not only does it
dissipate chronic muscle trig-
gerpoints and tendonitis,
these techniques also appears
to improve glide within and
between tissues, and break-
down scar tissue adhesions in
muscles, tendons, ligaments
and around nerves.
Chiropractors have used
these techniques to success-
fully treat many soft tissue
and joint conditions that
other therapies have failed to
resolve. For example, a
patient recently visited a chi-
ropractor complaining of
debilitating back, hip and
groin pain that began follow-
ing a car accident many years
earlier. She said she had tried
everything to cure her
problem, to no avail.
Walking, gardening and golf
were among the favorite
activities she had been forced
to give up long ago, and only
extra-strength painkillers
enabled her to make it
through the day. Utilizing
these soft tissue techniques as
part of her chiropractic care,
she experienced significant
symptom relief after only a
few weeks of treatment. She
is now going for walks again,
gardening and looking for-
ward to golf.

Physical Therapist, Director of Rehabilitation
M
atthew graduated with honors from New York
University in 1997 and began a satisfying career in
orthopedics specializing in spine rehabilitation. Ever
keen to learn and do more for his patients Matthew began
studying diligently for his certification in Orthopedic Manual
Therapy. This training exposed him to the concept of
Maitland Australian therapy, the Maitland Concept is referred
to as a concept and not as a technique. Emphasis is placed
not on the technique of treatment but on a basic philosophy-
a thought and decision making process, involving analytical
examination and assessment on which treatment decisions are
based.
Matthew has also had the thrill of studying with world-
renowned therapists Brian Mulligan and David Butler, further
expanding his clinical skills into more diverse orthopedic and
nerve injury treatments. Not to be missed, Matthew also
trained in the McKenzie Diagnosis and treatment of the spine.
Matthew believes the combination of this training and
education in the Australian, New Zealand and American
treatment strategies have allowed him to provide broader
range of treatment options thereby helping more patients.
Matthew has been a Director of Physical Therapy for 8
years, helping develop spine and sports clinics into leaders in
their respective communities. He is excited and eager to bring
his skills to the Advanced Sports Medicine & Physical

T
om Ferraro, Solar &
More - If youre like
me, the recent per-
formance of stocks, bonds, real
estate and some other so-
called safe investments have
been playing havoc with my
tolerance for risk. Our 401k
has performed like a yoyo
since our financial markets
crashed back in 2008 and
actually, more like dead-
weight!
Since then, Ive moved
most of my investments into
low return but safe money
markets and certificates of
deposits, lowering my returns
down to what I call why
bother rates. The returns
promised by investment hous-
es just dont materialize any
more unless youre willing to
take on high risk.
But there is an option
not very well understooda
way to diversify your invest-
ment portfolio while garner-
ing double digit returns.
Known to only a select few, a
solar photovoltaic (PV) sys-
tem can return between 13-
20% on your investment.
Heres how it works.
The cost of a typical solar
PV system in New Jersey is
averaging about $30,000.
First, right off the top, youre
eligible for a 30% Federal Tax
Credit, or in this case $9,000.
So now youre down to an
adjusted cost of $21,000. A
typical $30,000 system would
probably reduce your electric
bill about $1,300 in the first
year. And through a New
Jersey incentive program
called SRECs (Solar Renew-
able Energy Certificates),
youd generate another $2,000
per year in income. This
results in a total annual cash
flow of $3,300, or a simple
Return on Investment of over
15%. A payback on this
investment would come out to
6.4 years on an investment
that will last for at least 25,
and probably 30 40 years.
With this cash outlay,
youll recover about 40%, or
$12,000 in the first year alone.
And there are programs to
help you get to the end of the
first year without any out of
pocket outlays. In effect, buy
a $30,000 solar system and
only pay $18,000after the
end of the first year!
So, the question you
have to ask your investment
advisor is: can you get me 15%
on an investment whose prin-
ciple cant go down without
affected my current cash flow?
The answer is yesif you
invest in solar!

tems. For more information,

O
ld age happens. Our
dogs are no excep-
tion. As our dogs
become senior citizens, their
physical and mental capabili-
ties change and their needs
change too. Being aware of
these changes and knowing
what to expect will help your
pets golden years be happy
and comfortable.
Some common changes
that you may expect to see in
your senior dog are: loss of
hearing or vision, decreased
activity and/or weight gain,
changes in skin or fur, dental
disease, more sensitive stom-
ach, lumps and bumps, or
even dementia. These
changes dont happen at the
same time for all dogs
because in general, smaller
breeds live longer than larger
dogs. A good rule of thumb
is that, on average, a dog is
considered a senior at 7 years
of age.
Senior dogs may act dif-
ferently and may require dif-
ferent care but AGE IS NOT
A DISEASE. These dogs
arent lost causes and mini-
mal effort can add years to
their lives. The main focus
should be on prevention.
Whenever possible, it is bet-
ter and less costly to prevent
a problem from occurring,
rather than wait for a prob-
lem to develop. Detecting
diseases in their early stages
greatly improves the out-
come. Advancements in vet-
erinary medicine have kept
our pets alive longer, health-
ier and happier. If there is a
problem with your dog, don't
assume its just because
he/she is old, and nothing
can be done. With the appro-
priate treatment, which can
be simple and non-invasive,
many conditions can
improve.
Geriatric care for your
dog and prevention begins
with routine visits to your
veterinarian. Most pets visit
their veterinarian once a
year but it is recommended
that senior pets be seen every
6 months. Mainly because
dogs age approximately seven
times faster than us and early
detection of problems is key.
Your veterinarian may do the
following to assess and main-
tain a healthy senior dog:
take a thorough medical his-
tory noting changes in
behavior and physical abili-
ties, a complete physical
examination, early detection
bloodworm and urinalysis,
aspiration of any new lumps
or bumps, x-rays, glaucoma
checks and blood pressure
checks.
Based on the veterinari-
ans findings, treatment
options and care can be dis-
cussed. One of the most
important aspects is nutri-
tion. In general, a high qual-
ity senior food is recom-
mended once your dog reach-
es 7 years of age but there
may be very individual nutri-
tional needs. The best food
to feed depends on the spe-
cific problems or nutritional
requirements of the individ-
ual animal. For instance,
obesity is a very common
problem of older animals and
will shorten their lifespan. A
lower calorie/ higher fiber
diet would be recommended
for these dogs. Other diets
would be advised for dogs
with GI disorders, kidney or
liver disease, arthritis, skin
problems, etc.
Home care is also essen-
tial. Close observation of
any changes in mobility,
drinking, eating, etc should
be noted and reported to
your veterinarian early.
Potential problems may also
be uncovered by getting your
hands on your pet to inspect
them periodically.
Feed a good quality dog
food that is appropriate for
your dog's specific needs. Do
not allow your pet to gain
excessive weight which is
very common when your sen-
ior dogs metabolism slows
down and they dont exercise
as much. It can make them
more prone to arthritis, heart
disease and diabetes. Follow
your veterinarian's recom-
mendations as to exercise,
nutrition and any medica-
tions that may be needed.
Our senior dogs may not
be able to do what they used
to but with a little preven-
tion and early detection they
can still live a happy, fulfill-
ing life and still be wonderful
companions to us.

hen a child begins
to walk his or her
parents expect the
child to utilize good posture
with feet pointed in a straight
or neutral direction. When a
new walkers feet are pointing
in, (pidgeontoed) or out,
(bowlegged) it may be a
source of concern for family
members. Parents often ask if
the childs walk is normal.
Will the child grow out of it
and will it cause problems into
adulthood?
Infants learning to walk
typically stand with their legs
in a wide position, their arms
held high and sometimes their
feet turned in or out. Some
parents often describe this
early walking pattern as the
Frankenstein walk. This
walk is partially a result of the
child trying to balance as well
as he or she can when learning
a new and difficult skill. In
order to enable the parent to
understand what the infant is
experiencing, I ask them to
recall the first time they went
skiing. They often remember
the stiffness of their bodies,
the wide stance of their legs
and their lack of fluidity as
they awkwardly attempted to
snowplow down the bunny
slope. The parent can then see
the similarities between the
novice skier and walker. With
practice, coordination
improves in both cases. I
advise parents that this is a
normal part of their childs
development and there is no
need to be concerned at this
time.
During certain develop-
mental tasks in or outtoeing is
normal. At birth the upper
portion of the thigh bone is
rotated inward an average of
40 degrees. By the age of
eight, this inward rotation or
anteversion typically decreas-
es to 10 to15 degrees. It is nor-
mal for the childs feet to turn
in when he or she begins to
walk. However, after 6-8
months when the child has
built strength, the arches of
the foot have begun to devel-
op and stability and balance
improves; the intoeing should
diminish.
Some childrens inward
rotation does not diminish
and the intoeing posture per-
sists causing various problems.
Intoeing may cause the child
to trip because of difficulty
clearing the foot off the
ground. Intoeing may also
result in a delay of motor mile-
stones like jumping, skipping,
hopping and running. The
child may have difficulty
keeping up with his age level
peers and may also demon-
strate muscular weakness,
hyperflexibility of the hip
muscles that turn the thigh in
and poor trunk strength due
to faulty W sitting postures.
If your child demonstrates the
symptoms mentioned, a con-
sultation with a pediatric
physical therapist should be
obtained. If intoeing is left
untreated in early childhood,
the adolescent may experi-
ence knee pain or instability
as a result.
There are three typical
causes of intoeing: Metatarsus
adductus (curved foot),
Femoral anteversion (twisted
thigh bone) and Tibial torsion
(twisted shin bone). A child
with femoral anteversion is
easily identifiable. He or she
usually sits in a W position

Q. Will a vegetarian

A. Joanne says...Love
those veggies, beans
and grains as much as
you can. Try to eat at
Ieast four or five pIant-

using beans, IentiIs or
organic tofu as your
protein. There are many
studies that have found
a boost in metaboIism
after vegan meaIs. So,
instead of being stored

are being used more

Q. If I drink more

Dehydration is the

ncouraging the use of
creative activities and
games that challenge
your children to think out-
side the box and build their
problem solving skills at an
early age will help encourage
them to become independent

skills that will benefit
them for the rest of their

Giving your child simple
games such as building blocks
that require identifying differ-
ent shapes is a great way to
start building problem solving
skills. For older children,
more challenging games may
be required to build their
problem solving abilities and
their confidence in taking on
greater challenges. One new
game that has caught the
attention of educators and
parents alike is the new

each other or the
clock. In addition
to being an enter-
taining game, its
a valuable tool for
cognitive devel-
opment, encour-
aging children to
exercise their problem-solv-
ing, motor and dexterity
skills, as well as improving
their hand-eye coordination.
Ex-perts say the game is just
as challenging for adults as it
is for children and will espe-
cially keep parent solving
skills sharp as well.

with the knees bent and the
feet flared out behind them.
Their running pattern is usu-
ally characterized by a wind-
mill motion of the legs.
The most common cause
of intoeing in children 1 to 3
years old is internal tibial rota-
tion. The parents note that
the child appears to be bow-
legged and trips and falls fre-
quently.
Metatarsus adductus is
the incurving of the foot,
common in newborn children.
The foot often takes on the
shape similar to a kidney bean
where both the toes and heel
curve in. This deformity is
usually a result of positioning
in the womb. All three causes
of intoeing can give rise to
functional deficits in gross
motor skill development and
should not be left untreated.
Outtoeing is caused by
torsional forces that pull the
thigh bone in an outward
direction. Outtoeing if not
addressed, like intoeing is
associated with patella track-
ing problems that cause knee
pain and muscular imbalances
in the adolescent years.
Referral to a pediatric
physical therapist for intoeing
or outtoeing is necessary when
the child is experiencing diffi-
culty with functional age
appropriate activities and if
the child exhibits asymmetries
that are causing pain.
Through therapeutic exercise,
flexibility training, mobiliza-
tions, functional training and
consultation with a pediatric
orthopedist, in and outtoeing
can be treated successfully. In
an aesthetic sense, the child
will be able to walk with a
more straight or neutral foot
posture. The child will be
able to keep up with his peers
when participating in age
appropriate gross motor skills
and finally the childs
improved biomechanical
alignment will result in a
decreased occurrence of
orthopedic problems into ado-
lescence and adulthood.
Gena Livingston is a pediatric
physical therapist, who brings

W
ith the deep-
freeze factor
at its annual
high, the potential bene-
fits of making energy sav-
ing improvements really
hit home. Yet saving
energy and money and
adding comfort to your
home should always be in
season. Industry experts at
Icynene (icynene.com) recom-
mend you put these home
improvement tips on your 2012
calendar:
Winter
Install affordable plastic win-
dow-sealing kits, especially
where you feel drafts.
Install foam gaskets behind
electrical outlets and switches
to reduce air leakage.
Close the fireplace damper
tightly when its not in use. If
you use your fireplace regularly,
consider adding a well-
designed insert.
Replace or clean furnace fil-
ters at least once every three
months.
Spring
Consider larger home
improvements, like
replacing windows that
are best completed when
the weather is nice.
Consider adding spray
foam insulation (like
innovative Icynene) to
your attic or in other
areas of your home
where the summer heat
can infiltrate. You can start sav-
ing up to 50 percent in energy
costs all year long.
Is your air conditioner old or
on its last legs? Before things
heat up, consider investing in
an energy efficient Energy Star-
rated unit. Consult an expert to
ensure the size of the unit is
properly matched to the needs

Summer
Add window coverings to
block sunlight during the day,
so your air conditioner doesnt
have to work as hard.
Replace inefficient incandes-
cent lighting with more effi-
cient compact fluorescent or
LED lighting that also produce
less heat.
Check your hot water tank. If
its warm to the touch, it might
need some extra insulation.
Check your home improve-
ment store for inexpensive pre-
cut tank jackets or blankets.
Fall
Check insulation levels
where you can, like the attic or
the floor of a room over the
garage. If you didnt get to it in
the spring, install spray foam
insulation to seal around open-
ings and penetrations that let
air flow in and out of your
home.
Use caulking, sealant and
weather-stripping to create a
barrier against air and water
around doorframes, windows
and baseboards. Choose the
right caulking for the surface.
Insulate your hot water pipes
to reduce heat loss. It may
enable you to reduce the tem-
perature setting on your hot
water tank.

arbecuing isnt just for
the lazy days of sum-
mer. Delicious grilled
meals are easy to prepare
year-round. Here are a few
tips for winter barbecuing
that are important to remem-
ber before you get the snow
shovel out.
Always pre-heat your bar-
becue. Pre-heat to 400o F
450o F at minimum, and
adjust the temperature from
there. Remember, if food
doesnt sizzle when you put it
on the grill, your barbecue is
not hot enough.
If you are grilling with char-
coal, include more charcoal
for increased pre-heating
time and extra heat while
grilling.
Cooking times may change
with extreme cold. Always
use an instant read ther-
mometer to ensure that foods
are cooked thoroughly.
Grill with the lid down.
Heat loss on a cold day is sig-
nificantly greater than a
warm summer day, and keep-
ing your barbecue at a consis-
tent temperature will be very
difficult with the lid open.
When grilling on a windy
day, try to reduce your expo-
sure to the wind. If grilling at
lower temperatures, keep an
eye on your barbecue to
ensure that it does not blow
out. If you do need to move
your barbecue out of the

wind, keep minimum clear-
ances in mind to avoid dam-
aging your deck or home.
Clear a work area around
your barbecue. This wont
impact cooking time, but
having enough room to work
without filling your boots
with snow makes for a much
more enjoyable barbecue
experience and avoids any
untimely slips or falls.
Several lighting options are
available. Some barbecues
have built in lighting, and
add-on handle lights are
available so youre not
grilling in the dark. Broil
King offers a variety of light-
ing options for their barbe-

Never use your barbecue
indoors, in your garage or in
an enclosed area. Carbon
Monoxide accumulation,
accidental fire damage, and
smoke damage are all possible
its not worth the risk.

rom the early 1990s to
the beginning of this
century, bigger is bet-
ter certainly was the mantra
of the home-building industry.
All across North America
buyers could browse among
home developments boasting
homes of 3,000 square feet or
larger and multiple bedrooms
and bathrooms. But according
to new data, home buyers are
seeking less space today but
more in green amenities.
Research by the
Canadian Home Builders
Association has found that
many people now desire
smaller homes with multipur-
pose rooms and energy saving
features. Theyre not ready to
trade in their two- and three-
car garages just yet, though.
Plus, a survey of International
Furnishings and Design
Association members fore-
casts that McMansions will
become a thing of the past and
more emphasis will be placed
on smaller, more eco-friendly
homes. Family rooms will
grow larger, as will kitchens.
Other rooms in the home will
disappear, including the living
room.
Many homeowners and
potential home buyers realize
that with girth comes a cost.
In todays fragile economy, the
ability to cash in on the dream
of homeownership may come
at the compromise of a small-
er, better-planned home.
According to Tim Bailey,
the manager of Avid Canada,
a research and consulting firm
for the building industry,
While many consumers are
willing to forgo space, they are

Here are some things
that you will and will not find
in newer homes moving for-
ward.
The dining room is becom-
ing extinct, with larger, eat-
i n- ki t chen/ ent er t ai ni ng
spaces the norm. The kitchen
will be the main room of the
home and be renamed the
kitchen lounge.
Separate rooms are evolving
into spaces that serve many
different purposes.
Although the sizes of bath-
rooms may be scaled back, the
amenities will not. Spa-style
bathrooms with luxurious
products, high-tech features
and televisions will be on the
rise.
The master bedroom suite
may not shrink in size, but it
could be combined to form a
home office and exercise
space.
Expect to see more high-
tech offerings, such as voice-
or motion-activation devices
in the home. Lighting, enter-
tainment gear, heating/cool-
ing systems, and even blinds
could be hooked up to a mas-
ter control system.
Thanks to an increasing
number of people working
from home, the presence of a
dedicated home office is a
given in newer homes. Nearly
40 percent of industry fore-
casters say that they expect
one in every home.
Home storage solutions will
also be a vital component of
new homes. Builders will cre-
ate clever solutions for mixing
storage into more compact
spaces.
With aging Baby Boomers
comprising a larger segment of
home buyers, expect to see
more one-level homes, or at
least homes where there is a
master suite and the majority
of the living space on the first
level.
Part of what is driving
this trend is the cost of homes

it is what I strive for.

out the corporate constraints and ris-
ing out-of-pocket costs from the big
box real estate companies.

in relation to space and the increased
interest in environmental conserva-
tion. Smaller, more efficient homes
require less in terms of heating and
cooling energy. They need less furni-
ture, and new materials made from
sustainable products help further fuel
green initiatives in the building
industry. Energy efficient homes are a
main priority for buyers. Although
the homes may be smaller, they will
not be miniscule. And home buyers
can expect a host of amenities that
will make the smaller size of homes
barely perceptible.
New homes are getting smaller

A
s a New York & New Jersey Double Board
Certified Facial Plastic Surgeon, I see people
from all over the world who desire a tighter
neck and jaw line. A more sculpted appearance to the
neck and jaw line is a common
desire from both men and women
from around the globe and this is a
trait that equates to beauty in every
culture.

The new K-Lift

procedure
allows us to create a very defined
cervico-mental angle which is the
region where the neck meets the
face. This line is typically very well
defined in the most attractive people.
The necklift procedure typically
included liposuction to reduce
the excess fat in the neck and a
platysmaplasty which tightens
the loose muscles in the neck.
This combination of
procedures has been very
successful in the past.
We now have the
option to include
the placement of
specialized sutures,
which allow us to
create far more
definition then we
have ever been
able to in the
past.
This procedure
takes about 1
hour to perform
and has a
downt i me
of about 7
days with
minimal to no pain. This procedure requires a very
small imperceptible incision under the chin and in the
crease behind each ear.
The K-Lift

is the ideal procedure for someone

who wishes to have more definition
to their neck and jaw line who does
not have a lot of excess skin. The
presence of excess skin usually
requires some form of facelift
procedure to reduce the excess skin
burden. Some people lack neck
definition based on extra fat alone
and these people can be corrected
with lipo-suction.
Some people lack definition
based on extra skin and these people require removal
of that extra skin with some form of facelift procedure.
Some people lack definition of their neck based on
loose muscles in the neck and these people require
a platysmaplasty procedure. Most people have a
combination of these factors contributing to their lack
of neck definition and these people require some if not
all of the above mentioned procedures for correction.
The sutures allow us to create good neck and jaw
line definition in people who have unfavorable
anatomy, either from the structure of their trachea
(windpipe) pushing forward on the neck or the muscles
of the floor of mouth and tongue, pushing down under
the chin. Previously, people with unfavorable anatomy
were asked to expect minimal improvement in their
neck and jaw line from the older surgical techniques,
but as our facelift and necklift procedures improve and
technology, such as the sutures, improves, these same
people can now expect very striking results that were
unachievable in the past. K
