Dear Student:

Congratulations on being accepted to represent your school in one of CBDAs AllState Honor Groups! You have been selected from over 1,600 applicants from some of the
most outstanding musicians throughout the state. PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION CAREFULLY!!! 1. YOU MUST VISIT OUR WEBSITE, www.cbda.org TO DOWNLOAD THE REQUIRED FORMS. All forms are all type able PDFs please type into the online forms, print the completed forms and mail them as instructed. Please do not staple or paper clip the forms. 2. FILL OUT AND RETURN TO THE TRANSPORTATION FORM, MEDICAL FORM, AND CONDUCT/DRESS FORM. The forms must be postmarked BY JANUARY 13, 2012. PLEASE DO NOT USE SIGNATURE REQUIRED POSTAGE!!! 3. Things to bring: a. Instruments (percussionists bring mallets and sticks). b. Trumpets, Cornets, Horns and Trombones BRING YOUR OWN MUTES! c. All State Jazz musicians must bring: - Trumpets bring your own Flugelhorn - Saxophones bring any/all doubles - Drummers must bring complete kit - Percussionists vibes bring mallets & any auxiliary percussion desired - Guitar and bass must bring own amplifiers and cords d. If student has been accepted as a Piccolo player, they should bring that instrument as well as their Flute. e. If student has been accepted as an English Horn player, they should bring that instrument as well as their Oboe. f. If student has been accepted as an Eb Clarinet, Eb Alto Clarinet, or Contra Alto/Bass, they should bring that instrument as well as their Bb Clarinet. g. String Bass players must bring their own bass, bow, stool and donut. h. Harp players must furnish their own harps. i. Appropriate concert dress for All-State Honor Band. Please see Conduct and Dress form for appropriate attire. REMEMBER WHAT YOU WEAR IS A REFLECTION OF YOUR SCHOOL AND ITS MUSIC DEPARTMENT. j. Clothes for the Saturday evening banquet and concert. k. Pajamas, toothbrush, changes of clothes, etc. l. Money for recordings, pictures (approximately $45)

Label your luggage and instrument with your name and school. Transportation: You may arrive in Fresno via private car, air, Greyhound Bus, or Amtrak. Students arriving in Fresno by Greyhound. Amtrak, or air will be picked up by a CBDA shuttle service. The driver will wear a CBDA badge. Transportation will only be provided for participating students. Registration will be held in the lobby of your hotel. There will be a mandatory student orientation meeting. Students will not be registered or housed at any time after your registration closes. CBDA does not assume any liability for you until you have officially checked in. If we dont see or hear from you by the time your registration closes an alternate will replace your position. Please call your hotel if an emergency will prevent you from registering on time. All students must be housed at the hotel to participate in the honor band for insurance reasons. Students will be required to sleep in CBDA provided rooms. Students WILL NOT be allowed to sleep in parent or guardian rooms.

You will receive an identification badge at registration. The badge is to be worn at all times and will serve as your meal ticket. All-State Performance lapel pins will be distributed at the banquet. Your weekend will culminate with your concert in the Saroyan Theater, which is adjacent to the Radisson Hotel in Downtown Fresno. Admission is free and parents are encouraged to attend. Concert times are as follows: Jazz Choir & Jazz Band Saroyan Theater Friday, February 17, 8pm Junior High Bands Saroyan Theater Saturday, February 18, 8pm High School Orchestra and Wind Symphony Saroyan Theater Sunday, February 19, 10am High School Concert and Symphonic Bands Saroyan Theater Sunday, February 19, 1:00pm

You will be expected to conduct yourself as a responsible citizen at all times. Your director and many other people have worked very hard to provide you with this opportunity. You can reciprocate by displaying exemplary behavior at rehearsals and during your stay in Fresno. Students will not be permitted to ride by private car while at the honor band. In case of an emergency at home while you are at the convention, your parents may get a message to you by calling your host at the hotel. Please see item number six above for this information.

JHS early check-out will only be done in the Holiday Inn after the students all return to the hotel. Parents may not transport their child back to the hotel for insurance purposes. Jr. High check-out will not be done at the Saroyan Theatre after the Saturday night concert. Junior High Bands, Jazz Band, Jazz Choir and Orchestra should receive their performance music during the first week of February. You are expected to practice and learn this music before you arrive. You must bring your music with you to Fresno. Audition Requirements are different for each area of the All-State Groups. Junior High School Auditions: We will use part and seating assignments based on the recorded audition results only. There will be no live auditions as there are with the high school All-State bands. THERE WILL BE NO CHALLENGES. The conductor has the option of re-assigning parts if needed. Students placed in the Concert Band will be moved up to the Symphonic Band if positions open up, even if it means moving from a first part to a third part. High School Jazz Choir Auditions: We will use part and seating assignments based on the recorded audition results only. There will be no live auditions. THERE WILL BE NO CHALLENGES. The conductor has the option of re-assigning parts if needed. High School Jazz Auditions: We will use part and seating assignments based on the recorded audition results only. There will be no live auditions as there are with the high school All-State concert bands. THERE WILL BE NO CHALLENGES. The conductor has the option of re-assigning parts if needed. High School Orchestra Auditions: We will use part and seating assignments based on the recorded audition results only for winds & percussion. Strings will be auditioned for chair placement during the first rehearsal on Thursday. String students should prepare for this audition by rehearsing their concert repertoire. High School Concert Bands Auditions: All students will be auditioned for band and chair placement on Thursday evening, February 16 at the Radisson in accordance with the following schedule: High School Clarinets: All Clarinet Students with last names ending A-L: Report at 2:00 p.m. All Clarinets Students with last names ending M-Z: Report at 3:00 p.m. High School, All Other Instruments All Other Students: Report at 3:00 p.m. The audition will be a blind audition, in which the judges will sit behind screens as the students audition for seating in the three honor bands. You will be auditioned in four areas: i. at least two scales chosen from all major and melodic minor scales, multiple octaves where possible; ii. chromatic scale (the one required for your recorded audition); iii. the same solo passages used for the All-State recorded auditions; iv. sight reading PLEASE NOTE: ALL SCALES MUST BE MEMORIZED!

All students will be auditioned in alphabetical order as listed above. Warm-up facilities will be available at 2:00 pm. (Clarinet) and 3:00 pm (All Other Instruments). Absolutely NO instrument playing in the open area of the hotel lobby. ANY STUDENT NOT AVAILABLE FOR THEIR AUDITION AT THE PRESCRIBED TIME WILL BE SEATED LAST IN THE SECTION OF THE CONCERT BAND. THERE WILL BE NO CHALLENGES. The conductor has the option of re-assigning parts if needed. 14. 15. Emergency Information: Contact your convention host for emergencies. Please see item number six above for this information. Participation Fee: Send your payment payable to CBDA in the amount of $355. Students will be housed four (4) to a room. HS Students: if you would like to room with a friend of the same gender, please sign up for your rooms at the same time Thursday afternoon during registration. JHS Students: you will request roommates on your transportation/housing forms.
