Attack on Ft. Sumter (1861) The South seceded the Union (Separated) First Shots Confederate Forces attacked Ft. Sumter, Federal Fort, in April 1861 President Lincoln called on Volunteers to put down the southern rebellion. The Civil War began 5. Battle of Manassas (July 1861) A.K.A-Battle of Bull Run North hoped for a quick victory, wanted to capture Richmond-Confederate Capital. Confederate Troops defeated the Union & forced them to retreat. South thought they had won the war-Lincoln called for an army of 500,000 for 3 years. Battlefield of Bull Run Rebel Yell & Stone Wall Jackson 6. Battle of Antietam (Sept. 1862) A.K.A.-Battle of Sharpsburg 25,000 Soldiers Wounded or KILLED Bloodiest single day of war. Confederate Retreated back to Virginia (Lee) McClellan was cautious &Union did not pursue Confederate Forces7. Emancipation Proclamation (1862) Lincoln used the Victory @ Antietam to announce the Emancipation Proclamation. This Proclamation-ENDED SLAVERY by the end of the year. 8. Turning Point- (1863) Battle of Gettysburg Battle of Vicksburg Helped the Union defeat the Confederacy 9. Battle of Gettysburg (July 1863) Union forces meet in a small little Village of Gettysburg, PA. Union attacked the Confederate forces, lasted 3 days Confederates lost 28,000 Soldiers-Union lost 23,000 Turning Point- Lees army never was able to go on the offensive against the North President Lincoln gave the famous: Gettysburg Address 2Minute Address honoring all Soldiers that fell at Gettysburg. 10. Battle of Vicksburg (July 1863) July 4, 1863, the day the fighting ended at Gettysburg. Union General-Ulysses S. Grant captured Vicksburg, the last remaining Confederate Stronghold on the Mississippi-Cutting the Confederacy into TWO . Cut off their supply route. Confed. surrendered after a month & a half.

11. Shermans March to the Sea (Sept. 1864) Grant ordered William Sherman to capture Atlanta, Georgia Georgia-Is the Industrial Center of the Confederacy. He ordered Factories/Railroads to be burned. Destruction occurred Helped Lincoln get re-elected 12. Surrender @ Appomattox Courthouse in Virginia (1865) April 1865, Richmond fell to the Union (Capital of the Confederacy) Lee Surrendered to Grant at Appomattox Courthouse, Virginia. Jefferson Davis Wanted to continue the fight, but Lee sent his soldiers home. 13. War comes to an End Abraham Lincoln was assassinated in Washington D.C. First Am. Pres. To be assassinated South Sympathizer: -Murder: JOHN WILKES BOOTH Civil War ENDS!!! 14. Reconstruction Era: 1865-1877 Period of Rebuilding after the Civil War. Rebuild: Railroad lines, Cities, Agriculture Plantations (Shermans March) Freedman known as Freed Slaves, lacked Jobs, Skills, and Money Freedmens Bureau-set up to teach job skills & hospitals for blacks. Black Codes- passed by southern states to limit the freedom of former slaves. 15. Reconstruction Amendments 13 th (1865)- Abolished Slavery throughout the United States 14 th (1868)-Guaranteed Civil Rights and equality. 15 th (1870)-African Americans (Slaves) -The Right to VOTE! **For the Southern States to the readmitted into the United States, each confederate state had to approve these amendments.
