LIFEGUARD CERTIFICATION

Church Leadership Banquet Sunday Evening, January 29 6:00 p.m. in the Worship Center

Guest Speaker: Dr. Paige Patterson

President of Southwestern Theological Seminary

Saddle Up
We are privileged to welcome Dr. Paige Patterson this weekend as our speaker at the Leadership Banquet. Dr. Patterson has the spirit of a courageous cowboy and the brilliance of a Teddy Roosevelt. He is a true son of the west, and his son, Armour, has become a western author, living in Arizona. As a President and pastors kid, Armour gives tours of the Grand Canyon on the turbulent and Colorado River. He has written a recent book A Look at Life from the Saddle, describing the Paniolos, Hawaiian cowboys. When I read about this unique bunch, I was stunned. Three California Vaqueros (Spanish cowboys) arrived on the Big Island of Hawaii in 1832. That was two years before the Alamo fell. They introduced the roping of wild long-horns on the slopes of Mauna Kea. They taught them how to make rawhide, and how to use lariats and saddles, horseshoes and bridles. The Hawaiian cowpokes were a colorful lot. They wore low-crowned, broad-brimmed black hats, knee-high leather boots, colored sashes, and bandanas. But here is where the song writer might take issue with them Dont let your sons grow up to be cowboys. The Paniolos wore fragrant flowered leis around the necks. Pansies were favorites! The Spanish saying applied to them: Every self-respecting Paniolo rode tied to death. To lose a lasso or cast off from an animal once it had been roped was a Paniolos ultimate disgrace. God has called His people, particularly leaders in our ministries, to shepherd the sheep, to lasso the straying long-horns of believers. We are to be tied to truth, lashed to the cross, resisting sin unto death (Hebrews 12:4). We must not give up, give in, and let go of our mission to reach the lost and to disciple believers. The rawhide of gutsy conviction and the lies of loving sensitivity go together in our ministry. In our tropical paradise, there is still much work to do. Ride with us on the First Baptist Ranch. It could be tough. Paniolos roped steers and dragged them into the surf to a waiting boat, regularly contending with sharks. Satan will try to discourage you from your duty if he senses blood in the water of a young believer in fear. But resist him, firm in your faith (1 Peter 5:9). Meet me at the Chuck Wagon on Sunday evening in the Worship Center.

There is a guest reception in the Commons immediately following the Saturday night and Sunday morning 11:00 service. Come and meet Pastor Wicker.

The Books of I and II Corinthians

Pauls letters to the church at Corinth reveal not only how churches struggle, but also what churches can do to reflect Gods holy character. This study will stretch, challenge, and encourage us as believers. We will be reminded that what God desires for our church is far more important than what we desire. Our preference must yield to His Word, and His mission must take precedence over our agendas. Please join Paul Horne as he teaches this class on Sunday mornings at 11:00 a.m. in Room DC109.

stories from the Great Commission

living letters

Four years ago a drug lord in the slums of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, wanted Eric Reese dead. But as the missionary worked with prostitutes, drug dealers and gang leaders in the midst of violence and danger, he gained respect and opportunities to tell people about his savior. It hasnt been easy. Eric says his greatest fear is that one day he will go out to share the Gospel and not come back. One night the police called Eric to be the mediator as they tried to defuse a potential gunfight. He was the only person both sides trusted. That call was especially hard for his wife, Ramona. But Erics decision to go opened doors for him to share about Christ. Ive learned to trust my husband with the Lord, Ramona says.

fighting fear
Some have questioned the wisdom of placing himself in such danger. But Eric cant turn his back on the need he sees around him. When I look around Rio I see a city thats saying Can someone help me? Is there a better way? he says. What this city needs most is people to show the love of God and to share the Gospel. Everybody has the same value at the foot of the cross. Eventually that drug lord changed his opinion, allowing Eric to witness to him on a monthly basis. Shortly before he was assassinated by a rival gang, he accepted Jesus as his savior.
