My field setting from consumer/client viewpoint: a.

Experience: Regarding MJTC from a clients point of view, there is definitely a significant power differential between client and staff. As a client, I follow a daily schedule/routine that is decided by the agency and which I am required to follow. Failure to comply with the daily schedule and attend school and the therapeutic groups results in.(Rooney, coercion) Typically my treatment goals are selected by my social worker with input from the team of clinical staff who work on the unit at MJTC. I live in a single room, where access out of the room occurs only at specific points in the day and only at the hands of PCT staff who have the keys. If I am placed on security (for fighting or threats) I am restricted to my room and have an allotted amount of out time in which I am given a total number of hours out of my room per day. Phone calls are allowed only to immediate family (mom, dad sisters, brothers etc.) Often, grandparents can be included on this list as well as any legal guardians outside of immediate family. Interview w/ clients: Observation: Oppressive aspects- clients often do not have a say in what their treatment goals are and are not consulted in terms of where they will be placed after leaving the facility. Rooney (2009) First response to a loss of control is an attempt to reassert control. If those efforts are not successful over a period of time, efforts to reassert control are curtailed. Such learned helplessness appears to be stimulated in a variety of environments in which such efforts to assert oneself are unlikely to succeed (p.105). Rooney (2009) Reactance will be high if a person loses even a few freedoms should those freedoms be one of few that the person has leftIf the number of choices is small, removing any one will cause considerable reactance (p.105). ** Talking to certain staff- Teachers, supervisor, other intern.
