Countiss Wins Gold in Triple Jump

Braves Shine in Field Events at State Meet
By Andrew Knowlton Staff Writer Chopticons track team saved its best performances for last and peaked at the perfect time, taking home 13th place out of 31 teams in the 3A Maryland State Championships at Morgan State University over the weekend. The Braves scored all of their points in field events. They were led by senior jumper James Countiss, who made his mark in the Maryland high school track history books by winning gold in the triple jump. Countisss mark of 456 was enough to hold off two LaPlata jumpers, Rose Xyan and Marcus Smoot, who placed second and third. By winning the event, Countiss scored 10 points for the team. It wasnt his best jump of the season, said Chopticon Head Coach John Urban. He jumped 465 at the SMAC meet. So even though hes state champ, he feels like he could have done better and I think thats the sign of a great athlete. They always want to improve. Countiss added two more with his fifth place finish in the long jump (6.61m). The fifth place finish was a surprise, according to Urban, since Countiss placed sixth in the regional meet. He kept emotionally in check, Urban said. He has matured a lot as an athlete. I think his composure is what helped him capture that state title. Countiss earned the gold medal just a week after he won the triple jump at the 3A South regional meet at Westlake High School. Senior high jumper Dwight Savoy took home fifth place in his event as well, jumping 1.77m and earning two points for the team. Thrower Patrick Moran came inches from taking home a state title as well. He placed second in the shot put with a mark of 15.36m, good for eight points. Turner Coggins of See Track Meet page B-2

The 2006-2007 High School Sports Season in St. Marys County was one to remember. All in all, St. Marys recorded 10 Southern Maryland Athletic Conference championships, three Regional Championships, one WCAC Championship, one team State Championship and several individual State Championships. Here is a look at some of those winning moments in 2006 and 2007.

about two minutes left on the clock. The Lady Raiders only allowed one goal in their entire playoff run (a 2-1 win over Perry Hall in the semifinals). Leonardtown shut out Thomas Stone (3-0), Chesapeake (1-0), and Meade (1-0) on the road to the State Championship. Our defense was incredible all season, Coach Jennifer Henderson said after her team won the State Championship. Theres a saying that offense scores goals, defense wins championships. I thought this was a clear case of that. Leaders of the Pack The Leonardtown boys cross country team scored just 19 points in the SMAC meet at Greenwell State Park, only four off a perfect score. and the third runner as close as possible to the second runner, said Demers. We were really focusing on pack running. The Lady Raiders had the same focus, winning the girls meet with just 24 points. A week later, the Leonardtown boys won the 4A East Regional Championship at Baybrook Park. The Lady Raiders placed second. Knocked Down But Not Out The Chopticon Cheerleading team suffered several injuries the week of the county championship in late October. But a dislocated shoulder, a broken ankle and a pinched nerve didnt stop the Lady Braves as they changed their routine and went on to beat Leonardtown and Great Mills for the County Championship. We came in a little discouraged, but See Sports Review page B-4

Continued from page B- LaPlata edged Moran in that event with a throw of 15.73m. He had a big day and finally broke 50 feet, Urban said. Weve been working on his technique all year long and he pulled together and got what he was shooting for. Moran also placed seventh in the discus with a throw of 39.49m. The Braves had several more strong showings at the meet, including freshman Kristina Howards 10th place finish in the long jump (4.61m), Nicole Lourettes 10th place finish in the triple jump and senior James Youngs 15th place run in the 3200m run (10:52.49). Overall, Urban was very surprised with his teams performance. Were pretty excited we had a rough season and we went 4-8 in the conference, so to finish close to the top 10 at States, were very pleased. The Braves finished behind four SMAC teams. agree. They might say its a felony. Heres what I would say to Vick about his dog-fighting ring: You make millions of dollars. Cant you waste your time and money gambling on something a little more legal and a little less cruel, like, say, American Idol? Of course weve all heard the story about the Duke lacrosse team. Its only been in the news for the last year and a half. In April, the three young men that were accused had all the charges dropped. Duke went on to have a spectacular season, beating rival North Carolina NCAA tournament quarterfinals and Cornell in the semifinals, only to lose to Johns Hopkins in the national championship. If only those Duke boys had won, my kids would have had the chance to watch a Disney flick about how the Duke lacrosse team was so brave in overcoming adversity. Darn Johns Hopkins! Barry Bonds is a big story these days. If he hits a home run, youll see the replay 10 times. If he hits strikes, youll see the replay three to five times. If he picks his nose, youll see the replay at least once or twice. But who cares about how many homers he hits, its all about the steroids these days, and thats a story well never escape. Floyd Landis is another guy whos made headlines. Not for winning a big tour or anything like that. No. Of course not. By now, we all know that he used synthetic testosterone to win the Tour de France. What people didnt know was what a big creep he is. Apparently, Landis and his manager, Will Geoghegan, made a prank call to cycling legend Greg LeMond, pretending to be his uncle and threatening to reveal that LeMond had been sexually abused as a kid if LeMond testified against him in the doping case. Heres one that you might not have heard. Academic studies were done to see whether white NBA referees Pat Ewing from Sandy Spring, Md., was given The Valerie Hill Award for his work with the Annapolis program. Valerie Hill was one of the original Brendan volunteers and an advocate of children and sailing. Hill passed away last year. Her husband Mike Johns attended the awards banquet and presented the award. LeBron James was quoted saying: I dont think that Ive ever really felt that there was a racial component to officiating Its stupid. But I think P.J. Brown said it best: Somebodys got too much time on their hands. Of course these people have too much time on their hands, but no SportsCenter minute or nine oclock news sports report would be complete without all of these elements -- these elements that make up the perfect soap opera or reality show. You have sex (the Duke story), drugs (Barry Bonds), racism (the NBA referees), scary phone calls (Landis), and of course, no drama is complete without a good old fashion pit bull fight, right? So there you have it. All the drama you wanted to hear in one story. Now can we get on with the sports?

Many years ago, Muldoon observed that sailing was a natural for young tactile learners and envisioned a program where youth would not only enjoy sailing but also learn how to handle themselves in emergencies, how to stay safe, how to help others, and how to work with a team. Muldoon said, It is understood that youth with learning differences learn differently, often by doing rather than hearing, or watching, or reading about something. The skills required to learn to sail are complex. Some come from a book, some are intuitive and need to be felt, explained and harnessed.

The annual award goes to the female skipper who has compiled the best overall sailing record for the academic year. She won the Madeleine Trophy as the lowpoint skipper in A division tallying just 62 total points. Freshman Sara Morgan Watters (Oxford, MD) as well as Patterson were named to the 2007 ICSA All-America Team. Charlestons Allie Blecher won the Judy Lawson Trophy for the low-point skipper in B division by tallying just 66 points. The Charleston team was behind just 20 points going into the 15th and

Behind the top three of St. Marys, Charleston, and Stanford were a tight top five in Navy with 216 points and Harvard finishing with 219. UC-Irvine finished sixth with 227 points and Boston College finished seventh with 259 points. Rounding out the top nine were Tufts with 280 points and Boston University with 288 points. It was a battle for the final slot in the top ten, with Georgetown eventually taking the spot with 302 points,

followed closely by Wisconsin (306) and Dartmouth (308). The bottom six were spread apart with Old Dominion in 13th with 361 points, William Smith in 14th with 374,

Michigan in 15th with 445, South Florida in 16th with 447, Washington just behind at 17th with 458 and Texas in 18th with 471 total points. The conditions were

tricky and required extremely tactical sailing all three days. The wind died at around 2:30 Friday afternoon forcing a termination of the final three races.

Traveling Can Make Job Seekers More Attractive to Recruiters

As the autumn approaches and recent graduates have had their fill of summer frolicking after four or more years of studying and test-taking, the reality of finding a job may sink in. The process isnt always easy with hundreds of like-minded individuals on the same mission. Employers are often inundated with resumes and may interview dozens of candidates for a single open position. A smart job seeker knows he or she may need something unique to stand out from the crowd. A trip abroad could be just the ticket. We know that travel is essential to a complete education, said Michael Palmer, executive director of the Student and Youth Travel Association, the non-profit, professional trade association that promotes student and youth travel. Traveling abroad teaches understanding of other people, cultures and communities, and these types of experiences offer young people a greater ability to be successful in todays global society. Studying or working abroad also ranks highly among recruiters, but even a vacation to another country illustrates a young persons willingness to step out of the box and show an interest in building his or her cultural competency. Job seekers are looking for ways to stand out from the crowd, said Steve Pollock, president of WetFeet, a recruiting consulting firm. Those with extensive international travel experience can demonstrate an interest in and sensitivity to foreign cultures - both of which are relevant to employers with global operations. Moreover, it gives the applicant something to talk about in an interview. Europe is one of the most popular destinations for students and recent graduates, providing a variety of cultures and countries to explore. Travelers can visit the Vatican in Rome, the Louvre in Paris and the Parthenon in Athens, all providing a new perspective and understanding about cultures from around the world. Australia and New Zealand also are popular destinations thanks to their amazing natural scenery and rich cultural stories that go back thousands of years to the first aboriginal civilizations. There are companies that cater to younger travelers with itineraries and activities designed to suit their budgets, tastes and interests - perfect for recent graduates. For example, Contiki, a travel company serving 18- to 35-yearolds, has more than 40 years of experience serving the youth travel market. Contiki offers more than 100 different itineraries throughout Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the United States. Contikis tours allow people to meet, socialize and develop long-lasting friendships with like-minded travelers their own age. Family back home will find comfort knowing that their kids are traveling with a group of other young people, all led by an experienced tour manager and driver. Travel packages include accommodations, many meals, coach, ferry or train transportation, and sightseeing for one low price. For those adventurers seeking extra thrills, the company offers a wide variety of optional activities such as whitewater rafting, parasailing and water sports. On all Contiki tours, solo travelers can be matched with same-sex roommates to avoid staying alone and to help defer single-supplement costs
