SMC Soccer Returns From Overseas Stronger

By Andrew Knowlton Staff Writer Every three years, the NCAA allows teams to travel outside of the country for international competition in the preseason. That third year came this summer for the mens soccer team at Saint Marys College, but after a turbulent 2006 season, Seahawk Head Coach Herb Gainey was not sure he wanted to take his team on a preseason trip to England and Scotland. We almost ended up not making the trip because last year there was so much conflict within the team and players werent getting along, Gainey said. But Gainey finally decided that a trip across seas might be a nice way to cure his team of its troubles. In the end, he was right. After 11 days of traveling England and Scotland, the Seahawks emerged strengthened physically and morally. The Seahawks started their 11day tour Aug. 3 with a stop in Hartwick, England. There, they took on Curson Ashton, kicking off their four-game preseason. The match was played in three thirty-minute periods to allow as many substitutions as possible. According to Gainey, the Seahawks accomplished one of the main goals of the trip, which was not to win games, but to try different players in different positions and test out formations. Overall, we were able to get a lot of answers, he said. The Seahawks struck first against Curson Ashton. Senior forward Mikael Tigrett was taken down on a hard foul in the 20th minute and team captain Alex Pyzik put SMC ahead 1-0 on a right-footed free kick blast. Pyziks goal turned out to be the only one of the day and the Hawks held on for the win. It was a very balanced, wellplayed game, Gainey said. Ultimately it came down to a free kick from about 25 yards out. It was very much a back and forth battle. Before its next game, the team took in a Manchester City vs. Valencia match and visited Manchester Uniteds Old Trafford. That was a great experience for the boys that had never seen an EPL game before, Gainey said. According to Pyzik, another highlight was a match between Oldham and Swansea that they got to witness. That was awesome. We were sitting right along in the front row, so we had awesome seats, and Oldham scored in the last minute to win 2-1. Another off-the-field highlight for the squad was a night of karaokesinging in England, said Pyzik. The team also traveled to

Head Coach: Rodney Fugitt (2nd Year) Assistant Coaches: Chris Jumalon (2nd Year), Linda Gale (1st Year) 2006 Record: 4-7 Overall, 3-5 Conference 2006 Highlights: Ending the season on a two game winning streak. Strengths: The womens soccer roster has 18 dedicated and hardworking players. Many of those players have played on travel teams together, which should help with consistency and unity. Weaknesses: Last season, the Lady Hawks played many of their games short-handed due to injuries suffered early on in the season. Key Athletes: Brandy Thomas, Leigh Rice, Sierra Bannister, Sammie Jo Goddard, Allie Major, Colleen Loux, Shannon Snell, Melinda Carty, Crystal Gale, Danielle Ostronski, Sarah Arneson, Jennifer Macala, Brittany Fugitt, Erica Roberge, Cari Toman, Julie Studs, Courtney Fonfara, Ashley Simone. Outlook: CSM has a very young team with 13 of their 18 players being freshmen. If the team can stay healthy and the new players can learn from the returning players, they should be able to improve on last years record.

Bud Light Rolls On

Andrew Knowlton Staff Writer The Bud Light Softball team will advance to the next round of playoffs with a 13-4 win over Two Point Thursday night at the Brass Rail Field in St. Marys Mens League action. Bud Light took an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first on an RBI single from third baseman Chris Carver. Two Point scored half of their runs in the top of the second to tie the score up. Jeff Gray got things started with a two-out single and later advanced on a single up the middle by Chris Pulliam, who went 3-for-3 on the Glasgow, where they had the opportunity to visit the downtown area and do some sightseeing and shopping. Getting back to soccer, SMC took on Queens Park FC Aug. 7. The Seahawks came out red hot, scoring three goals to Queens Parks nil. Senior striker Cyrus Albertson, sophomore Chad Henry and sophomore Kyle McCleery each connected for Saint Marys. Albertson and Henry each scored in the first half, while McCleerys diving header came in the second half. Though SMC had a three-goal advantage with less than 20 minutes remaining in the match, Queens Park fought back and managed to notch three goals of their own in a short period of time. The game ended in a 3-3- draw. The following day, the squad traveled to Edinburgh for more sightseeing. They had a four-day break before they had to return to the field. On Aug. 12, Saint Marys was See SMC Soccer page B-2 night. Jeff Hawk drove in Gray with a double, and Pulliam rounded third on a single by Tray Pulliam. In the bottom half of the second, Bud Light piled on the runs and took a commanding lead. First baseman Glenn Larnerd led off with a single up the middle, and he moved to third on a single by Sean Doerrer. The next hitter, Sean McNeal, knocked in a run with an RBI double to right center, giving Bud Light a 3-2 lead. With no outs on the board, Brian Gagnon kept things rolling with a two-RBI double to left center. Before going into the third, Bud Light poured in two more runs on RBIs See Bud Light Softball page B-3

toured the National Football Museum, which dates back to the late 1800s. That night, without much of a chance to rest from all their games, training sessions and travels, the Seahawks took the field for their final match. The tired Hawk squad took on Bamber Bridge, and their fatigue showed early on in the match, as the host team took a two goal lead. But the Seahawks didnt give up, and a late goal by Henry revived the weary SMC players. Late in the second half, Pyzik notched the equalizer to help Saint Marys end their trip without a loss. Definitely going undefeated during the trip was a highlight, said Pyzik. We won our first game 1-0 and we came back to tie a couple. That was good for us. Another benefit of the trip for Saint Marys is that they now have a four-week head start on their Capital Athletic Conference opponents, according to Gainey. Getting in a head start definitely helped us gel as a team, added Pyzik. Our chemistry has been second to none compared to previous years. daily. Once again, the Seahawks came out aggressively, and they scored the first goal of the physical match on a penalty kick by Tigrett. Heywood tied the match at one goal apiece shortly after, but a diving header by Pyzik with just 15 minutes to go put SMC up 2-1 and put them in a nice position to pull off the win. But in the final minutes of the game, the Hawks accidentally put the ball in their own net and tied up the match. SMC didnt sit around and sulk about the turnout of their game against Heywood St. James. Not long after the match, the team was at the Heywood Cricket Club to watch the Wood Cup Final between Heywood and Unsworthy. Fishing Report
By Emily Finch Staff Writer Still affected by the dying-off drought in Southern Maryland, many of the inland fishing spots with mainly freshwater fish are filled with more saltwater fish. Goodsized Spanish mackerel can still be caught off Cedar Point. The limit for these fish is 15 per person per day at 14 or longer. Flounder as large as 20 inches have been caught by minnow drifters at Cedar Point and Ships Channel, with even larger ones at Cornfield Har-

bor. Meeting the regulation of 15 inches for flounder is not difficult this year but only two a day can be taken home by any one fisher. Bluefish are still tearing up fishermans bait at Cedar Point, Ships Channel and the Point Lookout pier. Blues must be at least eight inches long according to regulations. Most fishermen say it is not difficult to take home the limit of 10 blues a day. Croakers are still sufficient around the naval base and Three-Legged. They are averaging 10-15 inches in length. The minimum size for croakers is nine inches and fisherman can take home up to 25 per person per day. The Chesapeake Bay is reported to be full of rockfish this season and liveliners are pulling in large quantities

CSM Introduces New Success Plan for Student Athletes

By Andrew Knowlton Staff Writer Last year, the mens basketball season at the College of Southern Maryland was cut short due to academic ineligibility. This year, CSMs Athletic Department, along with the help of the Student Success Center and Career Services, is introducing a new plan for student athletes to make sure that doesnt happen again. According to Tim Murphy, the Athletic Trainer and Athletic Coordinator at CSM, programs such as this have become a national trend and the time has finally arrived for the College of Southern Maryland to implement it. In years past, CSM has had the elements of the program together, but didnt have a person within the athletic department to help oversee the entire operation. Now, with the support of the Athletic Department, the Student Success Center, Career Services and every single coach, the program will be available and effective, according to Murphy. The Athletic Director, Michelle Ruble, who also oversees Student Life, spearheaded the program. The new program is focused on several points. Academic planning and advising is one of those main points. Every student will receive help in choosing courses, assessing progress, and determining the need for additional support. Athletes have a certain schedule and a lot of times its hard for them to find time to get organized, Murphy said. This program focuses on giving them help with that. A career advisor will also be available to help students with long-term goals, according to Murphy. Through this adviser, students will be able to make a conscious effort to ask themselves: Are the courses Im taking now going to be beneficial to my future? For students that are struggling with their classes, study halls and tutors will be available for help. All incoming freshmen and students who have GPAs under 2.50 will be required to attend tutor-monitored study hall three hours per week. Students that need additional help will be directed to CSMs Student Success Center. Along with study halls and tutoring, academic monitoring will be put in place to help student athletes stay on top of their grades. Progress reports will be sent out to all professors of student athletes. These progress reports will help the athletic staff in providing their athletes with tutors. During the third, seventh and 11th weeks of the semester, the progress reports will be sent out electronically and Murphy will be in charge of keeping an eye on them. When I see theres a problem, I can say to the student: You need to get in tutoring or you need to take a week off of sports. If the reports indicate that a student athlete is really struggling or that their behavior is inadequate, they will receive a Time-out from Athletics. The Time-out is a three-step process that includes a one-week suspension from all team activities, an indefinite suspension until academic performance improves, and finally a dismissal from any participation in the athletics program. The final point of the new program is participation in a seminar called the National Junior College Athletics Association Leaders for Life. During the season, each team will take part in this seminar, which promotes good sportsmanship, character development, ethical decision-making and leadership. Murphy and the rest of the CSM staff are confident that with the new program, canceling seasons will not have to happen again. Were going to be more aware of when students need help, he said. Were going to know about it at a point where we can help prevent it. Were not babysitting or holding the student-athletes hands, Murphy added. This is more of an accountability program. We have academic expectations here at CSM and thats something we take seriously.

Strengths: The mens soccer team has been very successful over the last few years. Since coach Galeano joined CSM, the Hawks boast a record of 74-22-3 over the last six seasons. Weaknesses: The Hawks will face a very tough schedule this year and will have to come ready to play every single game. Key Athletes: Chris Reulet, Selim Demerkin, Austin Blair, Konrad Hutt, Marco Gaudio, Ben Waldman, Brandon Jamieson, Guil Costa, Richard Conway, Dan Funk, Bobby Gale, Darren Jones, Jason McCann, Jack Parker, Brandon Gross, Brandon Evans, Bobby Slater, John Mueller, James Ritchie, Cedric Mansaray, Ryan Gonzales. Fortunately for Two Point, their defense picked up late in the game and they were able to stop Bud Light from enforcing the run rule. In the bottom of the fifth, with runners on first and third and no outs, Two Point shut down Bud Light by forcing them into a pop up and a 6-3 double play. After a scoreless fifth inning, Two Points defense stepped up once again in the bottom of the sixth. With a runner on first and no outs, Two Point shortstop Ronnie McKenzie fielded a hard grounder, flicked it to second baseman Tray Pulliam, who tagged second and made the throw to first in time for the 6-4-3 double play. In the next at bat, Pulliam made a tough defensive play on a hard line drive that skimmed off the pitchers glove. Our defense was very strong towards the end of the game, but Bud Light had such a big league there wasnt much we could do, Chris Pulliam said. In the top of the seventh, with its season on the line, Two Point led off with a Chris Pulliam single. Hawk then drove in Pulliam with a triple, making it a 13-3 game. With two outs, Sam Cooper doubled to left center--his second hit of the day--scoring Hawk. Down by nine and with two outs on the board, Two Point was unable to continue its short rally. With the win, Bud Light moves on in the playoffs and Two Points season comes to an end. According to Al Babcock of Bud Light, his teams season has been a bit of a roller coaster ride. This season weve had a lot of up and down games an weve lost a lot of close games, he said. But weve picked it up and our record reflects that. Babcock is aware that the road will only get tougher for Bud Light. From here on out, were going to be facing more powerful teams, so we hope we can keep it up, he said.

Back on offense, they continued to extend their lead in the bottom of the third. A sacrifice fly by Doerrer drove in Tunic Vanlandingham, who singled up the middle and made his way to third on a single by Larnerd. McNeal, Gagnon, Ricky Garrison and Nick Richard hit consecutive singles to put Bud Light up 11-2. In the bottom of the fourth, Bud Light added on two more runs, with a sacrifice fly from Vanlandingham and a single by Larnerd, who was 3-for-3 on the night. Two Point continued to struggle into the fifth and sixth innings. Even with base runners on board, they were unable to get the runs they needed to come back. We just havent been able to hit consistently, Chris Pulliam said. Hitting has been our main problem all season long.

In the Knowl
The Pride of Southern Maryland
By Andrew Knowlton Staff Writer August 15 was a day circled in bright red marker on the calendar of many high school athletes in St. Marys County. August 15 was also a day that I had circled in bright red marker on my calendar. Thats because August 15 marked the first official day of tryouts and practices for high schools in the county. For athletes that have worked hard all summer in preparation, August 15 was the day to start putting their skills to the test. From brand new teams and brand new coaches to conference, regional and state title defenders, the 2007 fall sports season is sure to be jam-packed with excitement for both athletes and fans. Personally, Ive been looking forward to it all summer long. Last year, I wasnt around for the entire fall sports season, but I arrived in time to catch three football games, a couple cross country meets, a field hockey game, and a handful of soccer matches. In those two weeks, I saw Leonardtowns boys cross country team win the SMAC championship, Chopticons cross country team win their region, and Leonardtowns girls soccer team win the state title at UMBC. Thats not too bad for just two weeks. Those two weeks were just a preview for me. I cant wait to watch the 2007 fall season unravel from beginning to end. In sports, its all about the journey. Following a team from its very first game to its very last is like reading a great book. There are ups and downs, all kinds of obstacles, plot twists and eventually, either a sad or a happy ending. Along with watching some of these great teams fight to defend their titles, I look forward to seeing the underdogs fight for top spots in the ranks. Also, there are new teams and coaches joining the St. Marys family, including a new football coach at Leonardtown High School. Another very exciting addition to look forward to is Rykens junior varisty football program as the Knights continue to build towards their goal of having a varsity team with a full Washington Catholic Athletic Conference schedule for next year. Although a strong class of athletes graduated in 2007, Im sure that plenty of fresh talent will emerge this year. Of course, theres plenty of excitement building up at other levels in the St. Marys sports world. Both St. Marys College and the College of Southern Maryland are prepping for the 07 season. CSMs fall sports teams (men and womens soccer and volleyball) begin competing in the end of August or in early September. The mens soccer team is coming off a successful 2006 season in which they won the Region XX Championship. Over at St. Marys College, things are already getting underway. The mens soccer team just returned from a trip to England and Scotland in which they played several games. Both the mens and the womens team open the regular season Sept. 1. And the field hockey and volleyball teams have high expectations for the 2007 year as well. Of course, I dont favor any one team over another, but when it comes to a St. Marys County team competing against a team from outside the area, Im always rooting for the St. Marys County team (on the inside). So good luck to all the teams of St. Marys County in 2007. Have a safe and wonderful season!

Do Dah Deli Reopens

By Emily Finch Staff Writer Friday was an extragroovy day at Do Dah Deli in Leonardtown. After being closed for almost three years, the downtown deli opened new doors just up the street. The old deli was located in downtown Leonardtown, where The County Seat currently sits. We lost our lease just before Christmas in 2004, said Maria Perrygo, daughter of owner Diane Battaglia, the owner of the building had sold it to someone else. Do Dah Deli closed their doors on December 17, 2004, which made it a sad day for many people. I felt like crying the day Do Dah closed, said Rashelle Wilcox, a regular at the deli. In fact, Perrygo said we all cried when we closed our doors. The closing was kind of a blessing in disguise, however. The Do Dah family packed everyone up for a road trip back to San Fransico, where the dream originated. We got to enjoy Christmas, said Perrygo, and the trip took over a month, so it was a lot more time the family got to spend together. But the community was calling and they had to be

Knights Host Pool Party

On August 15, 2007, members of St. John Francis Regis Council #7914 hosted a cookout and pool party at the Breton Bay Community pool for the Altar Servers and Youth Group of St. John Francis Regis Catholic Church in Hollywood MD. The Knights served burgers and hotdogs with all the trimmings, and families in attendance provided side dishes and desserts. Participation in this years event broke all previous attendance records. After the meal, the kids enjoyed swimming until 10 PM. Sponsoring such events as this annual picnic is just one example of the Knights support for the children of the church and the community. Youth is one of the five areas in which the Knights focus their activities, scheduling at last one event per quarter in each area. The other categories are Church, Community, Council and Family.

The Board of County Commissioners and the Department of Recreation, Parks and Community Services are pleased to announce that the improvement project to provide air conditioning, improve air circulation in the gymnasium, and install shower facilities at Leonard Hall Recreation Center is now complete. It also inventories community water and sewer systems which provide the basis for planned expansions. Copies of the plan can be reviewed at the three St. Marys County Public Libraries or at the Countys Public Information Office in Leonardtown. The draft plan is also available on Compact Discs. The show will run Aug. 10- 26, 2007 at Three Notch Theatre. This is an adult drama and contains strong language and adult situations that may not be suitable for young children. Williams play had been described by critics as being ripe with verbal fireworks. The NY Times called it a stunning dramaIt is the quintessence of life. It is the basic truth. The reviewer went on to write, In a plantation house, the members of the family are celebrating the sixty-fifth birthday of the Big Daddy, as they sentimentally dub him. The tone is gay. But the mood is somber. For a number of old evils poison the gaietysins of the past, greedy hopes for the future, a desperate eagerness not to believe in the truths that surround them

Critter Corner
Every Animal Has A Story
You hear about it all the time: a cat or dog is rescued from an amazing situation and ends up at the local animal shelter. Their story appears in the news, and suddenly hundreds of people call the shelter, wanting to adopt that animal (and only that animal). That animals story tugged at the heartstrings of these kind, caring people and they want to provide a loving, life-long home. A perfect example is the kitten rescued a few years ago from the Solomons bridge. Well, every animal at a shelter has a story, many just as dramatic or traumatic (at least to the animals), only their stories dont make the evening news. Theres the dog rescued from the median strip of a highway-running in and out of traffic, just minutes away from being hit by a car or causing a major accident. There are the three adult cats turned into the shelter because their elderly owner just died and no one in the family wants them. Theres the dog whose owner took him along when he robbed a liquor storethe owner was arrested on the scene, and the dog was turned over to the shelter. There is an endless supply of cats and dogs rescued from cruelty cases, and there are the usual stories of pet owners who are moving, expecting a baby, dont have the time, etc. Every day, every animal shelter across the country is full of animals that have a story. In most cases, only the shelter workers are there to tell it. If youre ready to provide a companion animal with a life-long home full of love, and youre looking for one with a story to tell, dont wait for the evening news. The Tri-County Animal Shelter has a kennel full of animals with tales of high adventure and tales of woe. Our main goal is to match you with the perfect pet that will fit your lifestyle, but guaranteed, your new-found friend will have a story of his own that you can tell for years to come!

Heres How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
