Intergard 343 Universal Primer

Introduction High performance anticorrosive coatings are the most successful and economical means of protecting steel structures. The careful selection of the optimum coatings system at the newbuilding stage followed by a carefully planned and executed maintenance programme can positively influence ship building productivity, vessel life cycle costs, structural safety and asset value. Progress in coatings technology, a better understanding of shipyard and ship operator requirements and the impact of Health Safety and Environmental legislation have all driven new product development. With many different products and technologies now available, selecting the optimum system can prove difficult for customers. In introducing Intergard 343 we outline the key technologies available for multiple vessel areas, explain the differences between them and compare their performances.

Intergard 343 is a light coloured aluminium, pure epoxy universal primer specifically designed to carefully balance the needs of both the shipyard and the ship operator.

Background Historically at newbuilding block stage, different vessel areas were specified with different primer systems. The reason for this was to address specific shipyard or ship operator requirements e.g.
Intergard 343 is an ideal base for SPC antifoulings.

Production scheduling Overcoating intervals Corrosion control Abrasion resistance Installation cost In service performance This practice was complicated and meant that one block could be coated with several different systems and many individual paint products. This involved frequent cleaning of spraying equipment when changing systems and a significant risk of cross contamination and wastage from partially used or cured paint units. Complex block

join-up procedures and maintenance of mixed systems were further complications.

Coal tar epoxy Coal tar epoxies were probably the first products to be used on multiple vessel areas below water. The industry standard anticorrosive for many years, the coal tar component of these products means they are inherently dark in colour making them difficult to apply and inspect in enclosed spaces such as water ballast tanks. In spite of this, coal tar epoxy products have earned a reputation for offering acceptable, economic anticorrosive performance. Due to concerns over applicator health and safety, recommendations from the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) to improve coatings inspection conditions, a need to improve shipyard productivity and a growing operator requirement for better in service performance with reduced future maintenance, the demand for coal tar epoxy coatings has severely declined.

A genuine universal primer allows the replacement of several products with a single product

Modified epoxy International Paint Targetted Phase Out of Tar Containing Products Whilst providing improved shipyard flexibility, in service experience has demonstrated that the corrosion control and abrasion resistance properties of these modified products is, at best, analogous to that of Sales the coal tar epoxy coatings. Equally this technology type can be susceptible to cracking at high dry film thickness and premature corrosion at low dry film thickness. 2004 2005 2006 2007 Now, almost a decade after the large scale adoption of tar free Coal tar epoxy paints have been replaced (in many cases) by light coloured, modified or "mastic" tar free epoxy anticorrosives. In simple terms, these products were developed by replacing the black coal tar with light coloured hydrocarbon resins, diluents or plasticisers. This resulted in light coloured tar free coatings which addressed applicator health and safety concerns and met IACS recommendations plus they could be overcoated by antifoulings and topside finishes thereby extending their use onto multiple vessel areas. modified coatings, an increasing number of shipyards and ship operators who have experienced their limitations are demanding increased coatings productivity and performance that only genuine universal primer systems can deliver.

Universal primers The purpose of a universal primer is to enable shipyards to manage their block painting procedure more efficiently and hence maximize productivity. A genuine universal primer allows the replacement of several products with a single product that meets all of the required shipyard needs such as low temperature cure, fast access and multiple vessel area use as well as the in service performance needs and future maintenance expectations of the vessel operator. All of these attributes can only fully be met through the use of pure i.e. unmodified epoxy systems.

Pure epoxy Pure epoxy means that the product polymer system is not modified with hydrocarbon resins, non-reactive diluents or plasticisers. Systems can therefore be especially formulated and designed to meet specific physical attributes e.g. abrasion resistance.
Many vessel types have benefited from Intergard 343.

up and out fitting. Similarly, vessels in service will be subject to mechanical damage through typical working operations, particularly in cargo holds, the external hull and decks. Corrosion typically results following coatings damage caused by abrasion, of which the most common types are direct impact, gouging and rubbing. Test X9 Combating abrasion damage and subsequent corrosion presents a very complicated dilemma. International Paint recognised that current industry standard tests commonly used to measure

Referred to only as Test X9, this unique methodology accurately simulates in service damage and identifies very clear differences between so called abrasion resistant modified epoxies and pure epoxy systems.

Corrosion protection Whilst the polymer system provides the basis for good abrasion resistance, it does not solely provide the corrosion protection properties required of a genuine pure epoxy universal primer. By the careful selection of raw materials and a detailed understanding of the corrosion process, correctly formulated pure epoxy systems offer excellent corrosion protection - even after being damaged by abrasion. Independent studies* have demonstrated that products that contain leafing aluminium have better resistance to underfilm corrosion creep than coatings that dont. Controlling corrosion creep is very important. The ability of a coating to continue to adhere to the steel substrate even after abrasion damage can help to reduce corrosion extent and future maintenance costs. Better abrasion resistance therefore means less coatings damage. When coatings are damaged however, correctly formulated, abrasion resistant aluminium pure epoxy systems offer the best performance. 28mm Typical Pure epoxy Moderate creep resistance 50mm Modified epoxy Poor creep resistance
