This is a very frightening but true picture of the present Indian society. Increased prosperity also brings about problems of its own. Psychological problems like suicide, alcoholism, drug abuse, marital discord, addiction to TV & computer etc. are growing rapidly in the society. NOW LET US ANSWER YOUR QUESTIONS... Q. Who can become a Professional Psychological Counsellor? A. Any graduate from any age group with a good responsive attitude and a sense of social awareness can be a good Professional Counsellor, after completing the courses offered by IBMS. Q. How does one enroll for these courses? A. One can approach any of the IBMS Spot Admission Centres throughout India for Prospectus, Enrollment & Spot Admissions. Q. Does one have to attend classes regularly? A. No, since these are Distance Education Programmes, one doesnt have to attend the classes or disturb ones routine. Still, as you are a serious student desirous of entering the field of Psychotherapy & Counselling, it will be highly beneficial if you attend the contact classes being conducted by the Director and his team from Headquarters. Also additional contact classes / workshops are being organised for interested students which will be handled by Psychotherapists, Psychiatrists and Clinical Psychologists.

Facilities are also there for attending live counselling / psychotherapy sessions, so that students can get hands-on experience. Q. I am a graduate of age above 40. The syllabus is very student-friendly and any interested person can absorb the same without much difficulty. One need not have any background or exposure to psychology, since our first two papers will be dealing with the fundamentals of psychology. Q. Q. I live in a small town / village, far away from the city. I wish to enroll, but where can I attend classes? A. These are Distance Education Courses, and you can very well study from your home, even in remote villages, without disturbing your routine. For your studies, IBMS course material is quite sufficient. If you need, you can avail of some books from the city. On completion of this course, you can provide services in your village / town. Q. Isnt it better for me to do an M.A. / M.Sc. in Psychology of some other University? A. If your aim is to acquire theoretical knowledge, it may be enough. But if you really aim at practicing Counselling / Psychotherapy, then it is doubtful whether such courses alone can help you. In such a circumstance, it is our humble opinion that the Professional Courses being offered by this Institute will be a much better or an additional option. Still, if you are desirous of persuing an M.Sc. in Psychology, some of our centres are having working arrangements with some of the Madras University Study Centres. So you can do both M.S. & M.Sc. concurrently. But admissions to M.Sc. Psychology will be governed as per stipulations of the University. This course is specially designed for those who are in the caring and other professions and are unable to attend the residential programmes due to various reasons.

Organisation of the course is the same as that of PGDPC except for changes in two papers. a) Theory Papers : PGDIC students will be learning Organisational Behavior as Paper 3 & Human Relations in Industry as Paper 5. b) Field work & writing of verbatim reports c) Contact Programmes.

Duration: 2 years Medium: English/ Tamil

Organisation of the Course

Ist year Organisation of Ist year of the Course will be the same as that of PGDPC. But there will be no 6th paper for the MS participants. II Year II Year of the course will familiarise the participants with the various techniques & methods of Psychotherapy as follows: Theory Papers : 1. Principles and Techniques of Psychotherapy 2. Clinical Assessment 3. Psychological Therapies 4. Behavior Therapy Project work In addition to the above, M.S. participants will be required to do a Project work in any subject connected with Counselling or Psychotherapy for which guidance will be provided.

Participants who have completed PGDPC are given one year full credit when they join MS. So they need do only the second year subjects to complete MS course.
