1) Indian Summer Monsoon in Climate Change: Global Climate Model (GCM) 98th Indian Science congress at Chennai ON 5th

Jan 2011.The year 2009 was the warmest year in the country in the past 100 years.Prof B N Goswami from Indian Institute of Tropical management, Pune said , Global Climate Models taking part in the IPCC 4th assessment report indicate that the increase in temperature in recent decade is most likely due to anthropologenic green house gases (GHGs).The current concentration of CO2 and CH4 in the atmosphere is 30% . They are 3 times larger than highest levels seen during the past one million years. 2) 2010-2020 has been declared as the decade of Innovation in the country and 14 national innovation universities will be established to take forward this goal. The Bry-Air Awards recognize and honour innovation. 3)Establishment of Indo-German S&T Centre: The Indo-German Science and Technology Centre has been established in India with its present office in Gurgaon (Haryana). The Indo-German Science & Technology Centre (IGSTC) is supported by Indian and German governments with equivalent contribution of 2 million euros per year from German side and rupees 13 crores per year from Indian side for an initial period of 5 years. The Indo-German Science & Technology Centre (IGSTC) is registered as a Society under Societies Registration Act (Act XXI of 1860, Punjab Amendment Act 1957) as extended to NCR Delhi. The IGSTC is governed by a Governing Body (GB) having equal members from India and Germany. The IGSTC is steered by an Indian Director to be appointed by GB on nomination by Indian government. The IGSTC shall support mega joint research projects with co-funding from both sides in rupee as well as euros components and participation of industry from both sides. 4) Tsunami Warning System: The National Tsunami Warning System (NTWS) is working satisfactorily for the entire mainland coastline of India along with Andaman and Nicobar and Lakshadweep Islands. This is a 24X7 National Tsunami Warning System which has been developed and implemented by the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) of the Ministry of Earth Sciences at Hyderabad. The NTWS is capable of detecting tsunamigenic earthquakes which helps in monitoring of tsunamis. As a part of NTWS system appropriate advisories are provided to all concerned authorities of coastal States/Union Territories using fail safe communication infrastructure. An allocation of Rs. 10.0 crores has been made during 2010-11 for sustained operation of various observational, monitoring, warning and expert decision support subsystems of the NTWS. 5) Indias third station coming up at South Pole: Dakshin Gangotri In 1981 the Indian flag unfurled for the first time in Antarctica, marking the start of Southern Ocean expeditions under the environmental protocol of the Antarctic Treaty(1959). The first permanent settlement was built in 1983 and named Dakshin Gangotri. In 1989 it was abandoned after it became buried in ice. Maitri The second permanent settlement, Maitri, was put up in 198889 on the Schirmacher Oasis and has been conducting experiments in geology, geography and medicine. India built a freshwater lake around Maitri known as Lake Priyadharshini. Maitri accomplished the mission of geomorphologic mapping of Schirmacher Oasis. Bharathi (2012) India has demarcated an area beside Larsmann Hill at 69S, 76E for its third settlement and second active research station. The survey has already been completed and the station is scheduled to be operational by 2012. When it is complete, India will enter the elite group of nine nations having multiple stations within the Antarctic Circle. Bharati is proposed for oceanographic research and will collect evidence of continental breakup to reveal the 120-million-yearold ancient history of the Indian subcontinent. 6)World Tuberculosis Day. World Tuberculosis Day was observed on March 24, 2011. On this day in 1882, Dr Robert Koch had detected the cause of tuberculosis, the TB bacillus. This finding was instrumental in diagnosing and curing tuberculosis. The

World Health Organization (WHO) declared March 24 as World TB Day. The aim of World TB Day is to raise awareness about the global epidemic of tuberculosis (TB) and efforts to eliminate the disease. The disease remains the largest killer of Indians between the ages of 15 and 45. Directly observed treatment, short course (DOTS) remains the best process for treatment of TB in Asia. In order to find new drugs for TB, CSIR had initiated the Open Source Drug Discovery (OSDD) project in September, 2008. A new low-cost TB Drug, Risorine, was launched by CSIR and Cadila on March 24. The National Tuberculosis Control Programme (RNTCP) is being revised with its new objective of Universal Access to Quality TB care for all. The intermediate target is to detect 90% of all TB cases and successfully treat 90% of them by 2015. The new objective of Universal Access was marked by the launch of a new DOTS logo on World TB Day 2011 the need to eradicate tuberculosis as a national priority in the 12th Five Year Plan and proposed that one of the 14 innovation universities being set up would be dedicated to Science & Technology for Public Healthcare. 7) Traditional Knowledge Digital Library(TKDL) The genesis of TKDL dates back to the Indian effort on revocation of patent on wound healing properties of Turmeric at the USPTO and anti-fungal properties of Neem at EPO. India has already signed TKDL Access Agreement with (i) European Patent Office (Feb 2009), (ii) United State Patent & Trademark Office (Nov 2009), (iii) Canadian Intellectual Property Office (Sep 2010), (iv) German Patent Office (Oct 2009), (v) United Kingdom Patent & Trademark Office (Feb 2010) and (vi) Intellectual Property, Australia (Jan 2011). In-principle Agreement has been reached with the Japan Patent Office while negotiations are under way to conclude the Access Agreement with the Intellectual Property Office of New Zealand. Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), India signed the TKDL (Traditional Knowledge Digital Library) Access Agreement with the Japan Patent Office (JPO) on 20th april 2011. 8) Science and Technology Conference at Kyoto: Dr. Ashwani Kumar, Minister of State for Planning, Science & Technology and Earth Sciences will be visiting Kyoto (Japan) to take part in an International Conference dedicated to the theme of Science & Technology in the Service of Human kind. The conference is being hosted by STS Forum; a major NGO supported by the Government of Japan and Chaired by Mr. Koji Omi, former Finance Minister of Japan. The conference will be attended at the ministerial level by over 20 countries including Germany, Brazil, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, Russia, Switzerland, Sweden, Mongolia, the Czech Republic, Zimbabwe, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan etc. 9) The Prime Minister Inaugurates 99th Session of ISC , Year 2012 Declared Year of Mathematics: The 99th Indian Science Congress held from 3-7 January, 2012, at Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT ) University, Bhubaneswar. To pay tribute to our great scientist M S Ramanujan, the year 2012 will be celebrated as the Year of Mathematics. Dr. Geetha Bali, General President of 99th Indian Science Congress. This was the third time that Odisha hosted Science Congress. Earlier, the 49th Science Congress was organized in Cuttack in 1862 and the 64th at Bhubaneswar. Multiple myeloma is an aggressive form of bone marrow. A team at the Institute of Cancer Research used a technique known as genome wide association study to scan the DNA of 1675 patients with multiple myeloma. When results were compared, scientists found that two regions of the DNA that were more common in people with multiple myeloma and were therefore linked to a higher chance of developing the disease. Multiple myeloma is also known as plasma cell myeloma or Kahler's disease. It is a cancer of plasma cells, a type of white blood cell responsible for the production of antibodies.
