ESSENTIAL TO MY
LIFE
My life started in big beautiful Wyoming. While growing up, I spent a lot of time outside under never ending blue skies. Exploration of the desolate landscape gave me a strong connection to nature and the planet. My family embraced and encouraged my creativity and explorations.

OF INTERCONNECTION
EYES, MIND AND HEART W IDE OPEN

I was always looking for something on our nature treks, I wasnt looking for anything specific and most of the time I would find something wonderful or intriguing.

MY FIRST TYPEFACE
RE-DESIGN AN EXISTING PACKAGE

How do we challenge old packaging conventions? What considerations go into a package redesign? How do we connect consumers to products?

three dimensional packaging

MY FIRST TYPEFACE
The redesigned magnets. This project is inspired by youth and history. I saw theses magnetic letters while looking for something to redesign, I had them as a kid. I thought how they could be redesigned to introduce kids to good type at a young age.

FUTURA BOLD

MY FIRST TYPEFACE

This package is quality built, it actually becomes part of the product. High quality materials make this a toy that transcends generations and stays out of landfills. Inside is a full set of uppercase letters and all of the numbers. The side panel contains historical information on the typeface and the type-designer.

Inside three drawers hold the individual letters. The design is inspired by the drawers of letterpress printers and is a vehicle to teach about the history of design and letterforms.

GARDEN GUERILLA
SURVIVAL KIT

Design a survival kit that contains the supplies needed for a specific scenario or location.

GARDEN GUERILLA
This project is inspired by nature. Empty parking lots scar urban landscapes. Garden Guerilla is a way for individuals to heal these eye sores. The idea is using plant seeds as graffiti to add color back into our communities. The pill above contains plant seeds. Designed for rapid dispersion.

GARDEN GUERILLA
This package contains a workers vest, jars with the seed pills, and a tactical manual.

GARDEN GUERILLA

My motivation with this project is to inspire people to take charge of their communities. It takes easy actions by individuals to make a big change.

EVOLVE
IDENTITY DESIGN

A concept for a new company and the identity to support it.

identity design

EVOLVE
The concept for this project revolves around giving back to the planet. I created a conceptual company that manufactures recycled cardboard that grows. The board is made with seed inside the plies. Logo design process After the cardboard is used it can be planted and will grow into a tree. This is the ultimate in recycling as it returns to its original form,

inspired by nature

EVOLVE
This project ended with the production of a process book that describes the entire design of identity. Research is critical and my design was informed by discovering a variety of relationships.

EVOLVE
This page features the color system for the identity , the ideal lock-up, further experimentation with the mark, and a supporting mark for the concept of up-cycling.

FOOD ILLUSIONS
PUBLICATION

A project to raise awareness in Americans about the origins of the food we eat...

research / publication

FOOD ILLUSIONS
This project is an attempt to get people to think about food and where it comes from. I used it as an opportunity to experiment, I wanted striking imagery to engage and affect the viewer.

FOOD ILLUSIONS
This image was made with cupcake sprinkles, glue and stencils. I am very much interested in exploration of material processes to obtain fresh solutions.

of people in the U.S. know most processed foods they are buying and eating are genetically modified.

Genetically Engineered foods have the potential to cause foods to become toxic, lower their nutritional value, create antibiotic resistance, and cause allergic reactions. GE crops present numerous threats to farmers, as genetic material can spread from GE crops to organic crops and cause contamination

resulting in economic losses and even loss of livelihoods and farmland. GE crops are already producing devastating effects on the environment, they promote greater use of herbicides which are deadly to butterflies, frogs, fish and most species of wildlife. Additionally, the introduction of GE fish into oceans could potentially cause widespread species extinction.

FOOD ILLUSIONS
Motivation to tackle the issue of food arose after spending time growing my own food and experiencing the labor and love that goes into it. I quickly recognized, in general, Americans take food for granted. Most people probably have little idea of what goes into their food and who is producing it.

subvert the messages that harm

FOOD ILLUSIONS
Is food a moral issue? A societal issue? A personal issue? These were a few of the questions I came across very quickly, and I am not quite sure I fully developed an answer. What I did discover was a lack of transparency in the modern food system. I decided to present an array of the different topics concerning food today to provide consumers with a glimpse into a system that affects their health and families.

FOOD ILLUSIONS

what did we learn?

transparency is key to a healthy food system.

POSTER DESIGN
BEAUTIFUL DISCOVERY

I need you to design a poster, Rick Valicenti is visiting. Ad Vogele

poster design

POSTER DESIGN
Preliminary Ideations
Rick Valicenti is an amazing designer from Chicago, Illinois. I was charged with creating promotional materials for his visit to RMCAD, in the Spring of 2011.

We brainstormed. One of our first ideas was to do a projected piece to promote his visit. Maybe we could composite Rick interacting with some moving typography? What should we ask him to film? Ad had some ideas and acted them out for me.

POSTER DESIGN
Experimental type
I listened to some lectures he had given for inspiration and was moved to hear him say Our job (designers) is to inform and inspire. Being inspired by some of Ricks Typography, I embarked on my own type experiments utilizing geometric grids as templates.

myself & others

Think. Work. Grow.

POSTER DESIGN
While listening to Ricks lectures, I kept hearing phrases that were resonating deeply with me.

I decided I could use Ricks voice speaking these tidbits and use processing to have his words manipulate visuals.

Using a program called VDMX, I was able to use a recording of Ricks voice to manipulate effect parameters on a looped video. By assigning certain audio frequencies to specific effects, the video is altered in real time by the words Rick is speaking. Doing this allowed me to capture random still frames and use those images as compositional elements for a final poster design.

Processing Video with VDMX

The video was set on a loop, I pressed play and watched. After some little adjustment I was very pleased with the results. To capture the images high-definition, I set my digital camera to take a picture every 2 seconds for 150 exposures, placed it on a tripod and let it snap away.

POSTER DESIGN
Returning to my original sketches I had two things on my mind. One, simple isnt easy. Two, dont be afraid to fail and fail often.

DISSOLUTION OF RATIONAL PERSPECTIVE

RESEARCH / BOOK DESIGN

For this project I had access to the J.C.R.S. Archive at Denver University. The results are a story and book crafted from the research.

BOOK DESIGN

BOOK DESIGN
This project was as much an exercise in research as it was in typography and multipage layout. I have come to realize the intense research necessary to complete a big design project. In fact, I believe looking deeply into subjects, reflects the importance of empathy in the design process and the understanding that arises. Having access to the archive of the Jewish Consumptive Relief Society was profoundly moving. Reading the patient files led me to a deep connection and understanding of an individual and subject I was previously unfamiliar.

TYPOGRAPHIC DEBATE

A friendly debate and collaboration with a good friend about the destiny of print based design.

exhibition

RGB V. CMYK
This project began at lunch with stereotypical designer doodling on napkins... and moved quickly into production

RGB V. CMYK
You cant fake the beautiful mistakes that happen while working with tactile mediums. We chose to focus on producing our print materials by hand, the old-school way. Print will survive in smaller quantities, but of higher quality if the digital paradigm pushes forward.

RGB V. CMYK
Addition and subtraction with found print materials. The digital side of the debate contained two typographic animations on loops, glowing in the gallery. One highlighted the much explored possibilities of type in a fluid medium. The other focused on the frustrations and barriers of digital information.

RGB V. CMYK
After completion of the debate, we gathered our research and process remnants to create an online gallery. Pictured below are block printed cards to promote the gallery exhibit.
