PROCEDURE TO ESTABLISH THE EIRP OF A NEW LINKWAY NETWORK WHEN THERE IS NO SATELLITE CONTROLLER SUPPORT

Background: EIRP means Effective Isotropic Radiated Power. on the transmission plan/cutsheet. It is specified for each carrier

EIRP = Power Into Feed (dBW) + Antenna Transmit Gain (dBi) Power (dBW) = Power (dBm) - 30 dB Power (dBm) = Power (dBW) + 30 dB Power Into Feed (dBW) = Crossguide Coupler Reading (dBm) - 30 dB + Coupling Value (dB) Example: Antenna Transmit Gain = 53.0 dBi Crossguide Coupler = 39.0 dB A power meter connected to the monitor port on the coupler reads +10.0 dBm +40.0 dBm = -20.0 dBW at the monitor port on the coupler Power Into Feed (dBW) = -20.0 dBW + 39.0 dB Power Into Feed (dBW) = +19.0 dBW EIRP = +19.0 dBW + 53.0 dBi = 72.0 dBW Caution: A power meter is the most accurate way to measure power, but it can't distinguish between multiple carriers. You must transmit only one carrier when using a power meter to do the EIRP measurement. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------Procedure to Establish the EIRP for the Linkway Network 1. Log into the active NCC computer (Sun) as user linkway 2. Open a console window 3. Stop the network with the ncc_stop command 4. Establish a console session into the MRT using HyperTerminal, hit <Enter> 3 times, make sure the cursor moves to confirm that you are connected and past the login. 5. Send the following command to the MRT to put up a cw carrier at the TDMA1 frequency: cw -freq 1335000000 -pow -11

6. Send the following command to the MRT to make it a modulated QPSK carrier at 5 megasymbols per second: cacmodconf -modulation qpsk -pattern modulated -symbolrate 5 7. Calibrate the power meter and set the correction factor to the number on the sensor nearest the carrier frequency if you have an older power meter. If you have one of the new ones that pulls the sensor calibration data from the sensor, enter a frequency of 14.385 GHz into the meter. 8. Measure the power on the monitor port of the crossguide coupler in the antenna hub. 9. The target value on the power meter to get an EIRP of 60.0 dBW on Truck 1 is Antenna Transmit Gain = 53.0 dBi Coupler Value = 40.0 dB Target value (dBm) = 60.0 - 53.0 - 40 + 30 Target Value = -3.0 dBm 10. Adjust the MRT transmit power in 1 dB steps to get within 1 dB of the target value. For example: cacmodconf -power -10 (to increase one dB) cacmodconf -power -9 (to increase another dB) cacmodconf -power -11 (to decrease one dB) 11. 12. 13. 14. 15. Adjust the HPA attenuator to hit the target within +/- 0.1 dB Switch to the backup HPA Adjust the attenuator on the backup HPA to hit the target within +/- 0.1 dB Switch back to the primary HPA. Reset the MRT to drop the carrier using the following command: hw

Do an ncc_start on the NCC to restart the network ---------------------------------------The MRT is now at the correct EIRP. Make sure that the reference terminal used to set the EIRP is now the active MRT. Here's how to tell: 1. It was the first one to acquire, or

2. Send it a tb command and confirm that it is transmitting burst id 1 (the Reference Burst) -----------------------------------------Power balance the AMRT 1. 2. Establish a pvc between 0x120 and 0x400 with 64k CIR both ways Establish a pvc between 0x140 and 0x400 with 64k CIR both ways

3. Send an rbtp to 0x400, note the burst id for the traffic burst from 0x120 and for the traffic burst from 0x140 (They will be an id of 1000 or greater). 4. Send an rb to 0x400 and note the levels in the Power column for the traffic burst from 0x120 and for the traffic burst from 0x140. 5. Use the NMS screen to set the power level on 0x140 so that the power for the traffic burst from 0x140 is within 0.5 dB of the traffic burst from 0x120. Resend the rb to 0x400 after every power change. 6. Delete the pvc between 0x120 and 0x400.

------------------------------------------Power balance the traffic terminals in the hub truck and the remotes. The AMRT (0x140) is going to be used as the power meter to compare traffic bursts from 0x120 and each of the traffic terminals. The HPA attenuator should be set to 10 dB in trailer terminals before power balancing. "Walk it in" one dB at a time if it's not by adjusting the HPA attenuator and the transmit IF level in the NMS screen. 1. Establish a pvc between 0x120 and 0x140 with 64k CIR both ways.

2. Send an rbtp to 0x140, note the burst id for the traffic burst from 0x120 and for the traffic burst from 0x400 (They will be an id of 1000 or greater). 3. Send an rb to 0x140 and note the levels in the Power column for the traffic burst from 0x120 and for the traffic burst from 0x400. 4. Use the NMS screen to set the power level on 0x400 so that the power for the traffic burst from 0x400 is within 0.5 dB of the traffic burst from 0x120. Resend the rb to 0x140 after every power change. 5. 6. Delete the pvc between 0x140 and 0x400. Establish a pvc between 0x420 and 0x140 with 64k CIR both ways.

7. Follow the pattern given above till the network is finished. Remember to delete the pvcs between 0x140 and the other terminals as you finish each one. Do this twice a day in the beginning. network transmit levels are stable. You can drop back to once a day if the
