Animal Homes
Animal homes differ greatly. Some animals like to live in the open. They only build their nests and homes when they need shelter, raise a family, or to protect themselves from the weather. Animals often choose the habitat or nest of other animals whose nests are already built. The barn owl chooses abandoned badger or coyote burrows. They like the burrows because they are already carpeted with fur pellets. Owls are great hunters and must change territories frequently. Beavers are excellent engineers. They protect themselves from bears and other animals. Beavers build their homes in water.

They make a pile of branches very high so it stands above the water. They chew and gnaw tunnels into it. They make a very large room at the end of the tunnel. They live in this large room. The room is above the water so it is dry. They leave an opening in the top for air. The beaver home is called a lodge. When the water freezes in the winter the beavers cannon nd food. They eat food they have stored in the lodge. The biggest beaver dam is in the United States on the Jefferson River. It is about 2,300 feet long (700 meters).
