Fiction Comprehension Activity 2

Have students listen to or read a Valentines Day story. Cut out the cards below and place
them face down between a pair of students. On their turn have them read the question to

My Heartbeat Experiment

Students at this age are just now learning about their bodies and how they work. Try this
fun experiment to learn more about their beating hearts!

Materials:
- Stethoscopes or tissue tubes

Procedure:
1. Discuss the job of a persons heart, visit one of the websites below or read about
what a heart does.
2. Have students find their heartbeat, or pulse, by feeling their neck (gently) or wrist.
3. Obtain cheap stethoscopes or make your own (tissue rolls). Let your children listen
to each other heartbeats.
4. Have students exercise for a few minutes and listen to each other heartbeats again.
See if they can tell a difference.

Explanation:
Students will probably be familiar with the stethoscope that their doctor uses but will not
know what happens when they exercise! Have them use a worksheet provided or science
notebook to record predictions and conclusions.
