Digital Electronics and Microprocessor
Marks : 100 Perods: 90

1.Number System and Logic gates: ( 15 periods)


Number System: Binary, Decimal, Hexadecimal Number Systems and their inter conversions ,
1’s and 2’s compliment method for binary subtraction, Hexadecimal addition and subtraction,
8421 code, BCD addition and substraction.
Logic Gates: NOT gate, AND gate, OR gate, NAND gate, NOR gate, Ex-OR gate, rules and
laws of Boolean algebra, DeMorgans theorems, NAND and NOR gate as universal building
blocks,
2. Combinational logic circuits: ( 10 periods)
Half adder, Full adder, Half substractor, full subtractor, 4 bit parallel adder and substractor, 3
bit binary decoder, decimal to BCD encoder, 8 to 1 multiplexer, 1 to 8 demultiplxer.
3.Sequential Logic Circuits : ( 16 periods)
SR flip flop (using gates), edge triggered flip flops(SR,D,JK and T), master slave JK flip flop,
4-bit binary asynchronous and synchronous counter, decade counter( asynchronous and
synchronous), Shift registers(SISO,SIPO,PISO,PIPO), ring counter.Memories(RAM, ROM,
EPROM, FLASH)
4. D/A and A/D converters: (9 periods)
Ladder type D/A converter, Dual slope A/D converter, successive approximation A/D
converter, study of DAC0800 and ADC0809 chips.
5. The 8086 Microprocessor: ( 12 periods)
Pin diagram,CPU architecture, internal operations, addressing modes, instruction formats
6. The 8086 Microprocessor Instruction set: (18 periods)
Assembler instruction format, Data transfer instructions, Arithmetic instructions ,logical
instruction, Branch and loop instructions..
7. Assembly language programming : ( 10 periods)
To find square root of a number, factorial of a 8 bit number , addition of an array of 8 bit
numbers, arrange given array of 8 bit numbers in ascending order, arrange given array of 8 bit
numbers in descending order, average of block of 16 bit data, count odd numbers and even
numbers in a block of data.

Practical Paper – VII Marks –100
Every candidate appearing for examination must produce journal showing that he/she has
completed 12 experiments during academic year. The journal must be certified at the end of
year by head of the department.
Section A : Experiments ( Marks - 75 )
1. Study of AND, OR , NAND & NOR gates using IC’s.
2. Half and Full adder using gates.
3. Study of 4-bit binary parallel adder/subtractor using IC 7483.
4. Study of Asynchronous binary decade UP counter.
5. Study of synchronous binary DOWN counter (MOD 16).
6. Study of 6- bit ring counter.
7. Study of D/A converter using R-2R ladder network.
8. Study of DAC using IC DAC0800/1408.
9. Study of ADC using IC ADC0809/0801.
10. Write a program to find average of block of data containing N numbers
11.Write a program to determine whether the number is even or odd. If the number is
odd, copy 00 to ML ------- otherwise EE .
12. Write a program to find a factorial of 8 bit number.
13. Write a program to find square root of a 16 bit number.
14.Write a program to find sum of 8 bit numbers in a given array.
15. Write a program to arrange given array of 8 bit elements in ascending order.
16. Write a program to arrange given array of 16 bit elements in descending order.

Section B : Workshop practice : ( Marks –25)


Every candidate should construct one project. He/she should submit the constructed
project and a project report at the time of examination.

Power electronics
Marks : 100 Periods : 90

1. Power Switching Devices and their Characteristics: ( 18 periods)


Thyristers: Structure and V-I characteristics , transistor analogy, thyrister turn-ON methods,
thyristor turn-OFF methods. Switching Characteristics of thyristor: Switching characteristics
during turn ON and turn OFF. Thyrister gate characteristics. Thyrister protection: over
voltage protection, suppression of over voltages, over current protection, snubber circuits.
Thyristor ratings: anode voltage ratings, current ratings, surge current rating, I2t rating, di/dt
rating.
2. Thyristor triggering and other devices: ( 14 periods)
Thyrister triggering: triggering of thyristors in series, triggering of parallel connected SCR’s..
Thyristor triggering circuits : RC firing circuits, synchronized UJT triggering, ramp and
pedestal method, pulse transformer. Other devices: TRIAC, DIAC, LASCR, PUT, SUS, RCT,
GTO.
3. AC to DC Converters: ( 18 periods)
Principle of phase control, Converter classifications: single phase half wave thyristor rectifier
with RL load, single phase half wave thyristor rectifier with RL load and free wheeling diode.
single phase half wave thyristor rectifier with RLE load, Single phase full wave mid point
thyristor converters. Single phase full wave bridge converter: single phase bridge rectifier
connected to resistance load. Three phase half wave converter.
4. AC to AC and DC to DC converters : ( 14 periods)
Types of AC voltage controllers, Single phase AC voltage controller supplying R loads (phase
control and integral cycle control), Single phase AC voltage controller supplying RL loads.
Principle of chopper operation, Control schemes: constant frequency scheme, variable
frequency scheme. Chopper circuit classification,
5. Power Controllers – their applications: (13 periods)
DC motor speed control, Single phase DC drives, Single phase full converter , Chopper
controlled DC drives, AC drives: induction motor drives, speed control by stator voltage
control, DC circuit breakers, AC circuit breakers.
6. Transducers : (13 periods)
Electrical transducers, resistive transducer, resistive position transducer, strain gauge, types of
strain gauges, thermister, inductive transducer, LVDT, Capacitive transducer.

7. Study of 4 digit frequency meter using IC 74926.
8. Use of semiconductor sensor(LM335) for measurement of temperature using transducer
bridge .
9. Study of LVDT .
10. Study of ON/OFF temperature controller( LM34/ AD590)
11.Study of linear regulator using IC 723 ( fixed and variable voltage)
12. Study of AC/DC timer.
13. Study of over voltage protection circuit .
14. Study of fire/flame security system using thermister.

16. Study of inductive proximity switch.
