It's not that some people have willpower and some don't. It's that some people are ready to change and others are not. -James Gordon, M.D. The Story of Who moved my cheese? Was created by Dr. Spencer Johnson to help him deal with a difficult change in his life. This story helps people to deal with changes in their professional as well as personal lives. It teaches us to be adaptable to the changes occurring around us. Who Moved My Cheese? is divided into 2 parts. One part shows the gathering of old school friends in a reunion party who all are facing changes in their lives and one guy starts telling the Cheese Story . The other part is the Cheese Story itself. The Cheese story is has 4 characters: Two mice (Sniff and Scurry) and two Littlepeople (Hem and Haw) who are about the size of mice but have complex minds like of a human. These 4 characters live in a maze. Maze is used as a metaphor for the organization they work in or their families and so on. These are in search of Cheese where cheese is a metaphor for what you want in life, be it happiness, good job, loving relationship, money, health or spiritual piece of mind. Every day, the mice and the Littlepeople head out in the maze in search of cheese. One day, all four of them find cheese in a place called Cheese Station C. They keep coming there every day and eat the cheese. The Littlepeople become comfortable and think that the cheese will be there forever, not noticing the decrease/change in the amount of cheese with time. Whereas, the mice notice the same and know that one day it is going to finish. The Littlepeople are surprised when they find the cheese station empty one day but the mice are not at all surprised and they head on in the maze to find new cheese. The Littlepeople cannot overcome the fact that cheese is all gone because they never noticed the change. Instead of adapting to the change, the Littlepeople just sit there and feel sorry for themselves. Meanwhile, the mice who adapted to the change are living large with their newly found Cheese. Eventually, one of the Littlepeople, named Haw realises everything and heads out in the maze in search of new cheese. But the other one, Hem, does not want to believe the truth and thinks somebody is going to put back the cheese. ANALYSIS AND EVALUATION OF TEXT: I totally agree with the author s viewpoint. I personally like this book as it is a short story which we already know but we jus need someone to motivate us. This book does all the job. My opinion is that changes happen to all of us. And resisting these changes is not a way to deal with them. The solution is to adapt to these changes. Running away or just being stubborn is not a way out. Being in denial is not a way out either. This book can prove useful to people who have read it if they apply it into their lives. Just reading it like a short story and forgetting about it will not create any use. It provides strategies of dealing with cheeseless situations. Strengths: It is a short and meaningful tale which is a tool for organizational change. Weaknesses: It should have been more explanatory.
