Product Range
Surface active agents, or short Surfactants, are usually organic compounds that are amphiphilic, meaning they contain both hydrophobic and hydrophilic groups and are therefore soluble in both organic solvents and water. They reduce the surface tension of a liquid by adsorbing at the liquid-gas interface, allowing easier spreading, and lower the interfacial tension between two liquids, e.g. between oil and water, by adsorbing at the liquid-liquid interface. Surfactants are used as emulsifiers, wetting agents, dispersants and stabilizers for different chemical and industrial applications. The selection of surfactants described in this brochure is offered for the following application areas:
Air entraining agents for the construction industry Antifoaming agents Auxiliaries for the sugar industry Disinfecting agents Dispersing agents for pigments Emulsifiers for bitumen emulsions Emulsifiers for emulsion polymerization Emulsifiers for micro- and macro emulsions of fats, hydrocarbons and silicon oils
Emulsifiers for polyolefin wax emulsions Organophilic bentonite Wetting agents for adhesives Wetting agents for coatings, e.g. in building, construction, textile and paper Wetting agents for electroplating processes Wetting agents for emulsions, dispersions, polymers, resins Wetting agents for hard surfaces like ceramics, wood, plastics and metals
Depending on the formal charge of their head, surfactants can also be classified into anionic, cationic, non-ionic, and amphoteric (dual charge) groups. The product overview on the following pages is organized in this manner.

Oleyl ethoxylates
The Genapol O range is used in emulsion polymerization of vinyl acetate together with acrylates, vinyl chloride or ethylene as well as in acrylate and acrylate/styrene dispersions to prevent the polymer dispersion from coagulation and to improve the electrolyte resistance and freeze/thaw stability. As an emulsifier for waxes and organic solvents, these products help to produce stable emulsions. Furthermore, they can be applied as a wetting agent and detergent in industrial cleaning formulations, as a dispersing agent in pigment preparations and as emulsifier for textile auxiliaries and detergents.

Nonyphenol ethoxylates
The Arkopal N grades are used as an emulsifier in emulsion polymerization, as wax emulsifier, in pigment pastes and as stabilizer in paints and coatings. They are resistant to metal salts, offer good dispersing properties and, depending on the degree of ethoxylation, excellent wetting and surface action. As wetting agents, Arkopal N 090 and Arkopal N 100 are the most effective grades. The excellent emulsifying properties of a number of Arkopal N grades furthermore allow the preparation of stable emulsions.

Tristyrylphenol ethoxylates
Emulsogen TS grades are an excellent dispersing agent for organic pigments and carbon black to produce stable, free flowing pigment preparations with high solid contents and with low viscosities. Used in paints and coatings formulations, Emulsogen TS improves the compatibility of pigments and minerals with polymers and binders, prevents skinning of emulsion polymers in paints and improves their shelf life and stability.

Low-foaming Genapol PF 10, 20, 40 and 80 grades are used as a surfactant and defoamer in detergents and cleaning agents. They are also used as an emulsifier in emulsion polymerization, improving the emulsion stability and preventing foam during the spray drying of dispersion powders. As a wetting agent in aqueous coatings, they reduce the surface tension of the coating formulation, improve the stability and shelf life and the adhesion of the coating onto the coated surface. They also serve as intermediate in chemical reactions.
Genapol PF 80 Powder can also be added to solid admixtures in the construction industry to improve the wetting and redispersing of the powder, resulting in higher plastification and improved workability and overall performance of the plaster. Genapol PF 30 can be applied as a wetting agent and emulsifier for oils, waxes, paraffin and silicones, as emulsifier for emulsion polymerization of acrylic monomers, styrene and vinyl acetate, as lubricant for polymers and resin processing and as reactant for polyethers, polyesters and polyurethanes.

Because of its interfacial activity and low foaming behaviour, Genapol ED 3030 is especially suitable for the manufacture of low foaming cleaners. Due to its good lubricity, Genapol B is used for the manufacture of aqueous metal working fluids in combination with suitable corrosion inhibitors. Genapol ED 3030 is resistant against water hardness, metal salts, acids and alkalis in practice-orientated concentrations. Genapol ED 3060 is a low-foaming wetting and disper-
sing agent for aqueous paints and coatings, in particular for white emulsion paints tinted with waterborne pigment preparations. It functions as paint stabilizer and tinting strength enhancer, improving the compatibility of pigments and minerals with polymers and binders and preventing rub-out effects and flocculation of organic pigments during drying of the paint film. Genapol PN 30 is a low foaming lubricant for synthetic metal working fluids.

Secondary alkyl sulfonates (secondary alkane sulfonates)
The Hostapur SAS series can be used as an emulsifier in the polymerization of E-PVC as well as in the production of styrene/butadiene and of acrylonitrile/butadiene rubber. The Hostapur SAS range is also a suitable emulsifier in the polymerization of vinyl acetate and comonomers, in the polymerization of acrylates and styrene/acrylates and in the polymerization of styrene/butadiene latex.

Olefin sulfonates
Hostapur OS liquid is used as emulsifier in emulsion polymerization of styrene/butadiene latex, styrene/butadiene rubber and acrylate and styrene/acrylate dispersions. It also serves as air entraining agent in concrete, especially for road pavements, mortar and plasters to improve the resistance against ice pressure during freezing. Hostapur OS liquid is particularly stable against calcium ions and, compared to other air entraining agents such as sodium alkyl sulfates, Hostapur OS liquid is more efficient and requires lower dosages. The powder form Hostapur OSB is also used as air entraining and wetting agent for mortars and plasters based on cement, gypsum or lime. Rapidly soluble and highly efficient, it leads to a faster wetting of the solid particles, enables fast air-entrainment and develops mirco foam at a controllable air content of 20 - 35% in a short period of time. Furthermore, it improves the plasticity and workability of plasters.

Amine oxides
Amine oxides are good surfactants and, unlike fatty alkyl ammonium salts, can be used together with anionic compounds without impairment of their surface-active properties. Our Genaminox grades are used especially in the detergent industry, where they serve primarily as foam stabilizers, in liquid acid and alkaline toilet cleaners, solubilizing agents and skin protective components in washing-up liquids and carpet shampoos, and cosmetics, where they function as foam stabilizers and emulsifiers.

Betaines
Betaines act as cationic surfactants and in alkaline solutions as inner neutral salts. They are often used in cosmetics.
Application Cosmetics
Amine ethoxylates
Their specific surface active properties make the Genamin grades a valuable basis and additive for the chemical technical industry. They can be used to manufacture textile auxiliaries (e.g. products for dyeing), as mineral oil additives, in crop protection products and pesticides, and as raw materials for cosmetics and adhesives. Genamin grades can be combined with all types at nonionic and cationic surfactants, and are compatible with anionic products on a case-by-case level. The Genamin grades are resistant to most chemicals at typical concentrations used and insensitive to water hardness.

Copolymerizable Emulsifiers
Classic anionic and non-ionic emulsifiers stabilize the emulsion by physical interaction. However, these surfactants desorb at high shear forces or because of electrolytes which then in turn leads to coagulation of the latex particles. In order to avoid migration and nest formation in the polymer film, Clariant has developed a range of copolymerizable emulsifiers, which chemically bond to the polymer, inhibiting migration in the film and resulting in higher latex stability. Additionally, freeze-thaw stability and shear stability are significantly improved. The products are also less water absorbant and enable hydrophobic coating surfaces.
