Phenyle Industry
Introduction: A disinfectant is an agent which destroys pathogenic organisms. A practical disinfectant, besides fulfilling this primary function should not be poisonous to higher organisms, should not have corrosive or caustic action on animal tissues and should not leave any unpleasant odour stain in the area disinfected. A chemical disinfectant to be effective and should be soluble in or miscible with water. A large variety of chemicals, both organic and inorganic have been employed for purposes of disinfection. The disinfectants which are commonly employed for general sanitation may be considered under four groups : (a) Coal tar derivatives including soluble cresylic and emulsifiable tar oil (b) Synthetic phenolic disinfectants (c) Pine oil disinfectants (d) Quaternary ammonium salts. A large range of coal tar disinfectant varying in composition and in the method of preparation are marketed. They can be grouped into two types of products : (a) Black fluids and white fluids (b) Preparations which on dilution with water remain more or less clear. Commercial white and black fluids have a R.W. coefficient of 125. The composition of a typical black fluid disinfectant is as follows : Cresylic creosote (35% tar acids): 55%, Rosin Soap: 30%, Water: 15%. Low grade black fluids are made of cresylic creosote containing 2040% tar acids ; white fluids contain a comparatively high percentage of high boiling tar acids, an emulsifying acid (Turkey red oil) and a stabilizer such as gelatine, casein. Black disinfectants are manufactured on a large scale in India and marketed under the trade name Phenyle Phenyle is an emulsion prepared by addition of rosin, creosote oil and soap. It is found in black or brown colour in high viscous liquid form. On mixing with water it is converted into milky colour. In India phenyl is available in 3 grades. In the first grade of phenyle, the concentration of oil is kept low or in other words creosote oil is added in lesser quantity. The third grade of phenyle contains high creosote oil concentrations and the second grade contain medium concentration of the creosote oil. A large number of chemical manufacturers prepare and market phenyl from coal tar fractions purchased from tar distillers. Phenyle is available in two forms(i) Liquid and (ii) Solid. Although most of the phenyle is produced in liquid form but now-a-days these are also used in the forms of paste and cakes. Solid phenyle is available in the shape of small balls and they find use in keeping woollen clothes, toilet and others to protect from insects. Properties and Uses: Phenyle is an agent which destroys pathogenic organism hence it finds a number of uses. The main uses of phenyle is in sanitation for drains, kitchens, stables, hospitals etc. Phenyle should have the following properties: 1. The phenyle should be a deodorant. It should not leave any unpleasant odour or stain in the area disinfected. 2. It should not be poisonous to higher organism. 3. It should not have corrosive or caustic action on animal tissues. A good phenyle should have the following qualities: 1. While adding in water it should be converted into milky liquid after proper dissolving. 2. The prepared phenyl should be of homogenous density and no ingredient should appear at the bottom. 3. After dissolving in water, oil should not be formed on the surface of solution. 4. It should have power for killing insects and to gel deodorised bad smell. 5. It should be able to withstand upto one year without any harm. 6. It should not be effective on human's skin if kept for 3 minutes. 7. It should be soluble in distilled water and upto 20% in hard water. 8. The containers used for packing of phenyl should bear label indicating firm's name, trade mark, Batch No. and other details. General Manufacturing Process of Phenyle: A common process of phenyle involves saponification of fatty oils and rosin. For preparing soft soap a boiling solution of caustic soda (30 Tw) is added to a mixture of fatty oils and molten rosin. The proportions of the constituents are adjusted to give 1.0-1.5% excess of alkali. Of, This soft soap is now dissolved in hot water dien creosote and cresol are mixed to yield a dark brown or black fluid. During the mixing continuous stirring is done for homogenous liquid. In this liquid, water is added in the end and the product is ready for sale. Formulations and Process Description: In black or brown phenyle, the proportion of ingredients is as under : Cresylic Creosote (35% tar acid) - 52 %, Rosin Soap - 33 %, Water - 15%= 100%. Three types of black fluids are generally manufactured in India. Grade I fluids contain low concentrations of creosote oil and Grade III fluids contain high eoncentrations and Grade II fluids are intermediate between the two. Typical recipes of soap base compositions for the three grades are as under : Grade 1 Type Percent Percent Rosin 80 Linseed Oil 10 Castor Oil 10 OR Rosin 70 Linseed Oil 5 Castor Oil 10 Cottonseed Oil 15 Grade 2 Type Rosin 30 Linseed Oil 40 Castor Oil 30 OR Rosin 20 Linseed Oil 30 Castor Oil 45 Cottonseed Oil 05 Grade 3 Type Rosin 15 Linseed Oil 35 Castor Oil 50 OR Rosin 10 Linseed Oil 25 Castor Oil 50 Cottonseed Oil 15 Note. In all 3 grades of phenyle the ratios of soap water to creosote is as under : For Grade 1 1:1 to 6 : 1 Soap : Water 2 Creosote For Grade 2 1:1 to 4 : 1 Soap : Water 5 Creosote For Grade 3 1 : 1 to 4 : 1 Soap : Water 6 Creosote Process Description: In a mixture of melted rosin and castor oil, boiling caustic soda lye of 30Be' is added and thus soft soap is prepared. These constituents are mixed and adjusted in such a way that 1-1.5% free alkali remains in the prepared soap base. The soft soap thus prepared is dissolved in hot water and then creosote oil of requisite quantity is added. Tbis mixture is stirred thoroughly to make it homogenous. The liquid thus prepared is either of black or brown colour, and is indistinguishable in appearance from the creosote oil used in its preparation. This fluid on dilution with water forms a milky white stable emulsion. Black fluids are miscible with soft and moderately hard water but not with salt water or urine. Hospital Quality Phenyle: Rosin 11/2kgs. Groundnut Oil 2 kgs. Caustic Soda (90%)1/4 kg. Caustic Potash 1/4 kg. Water (to dissolve caustic soda) 2 gallons Light Creosote Oil 4 gallons Carbolic Acid 1/2 ounceSoft Water 1/2 to 1 gallon Hospital Quality Phenyle Method: Melt rosin on slow fire and add groundnut oil in it. As soon as smoke starts coming out, add caustic solution which is prepared previously and stirring is continued so that saponification is completed in all respects. Now add some more fresh water and stir thoroughly. On completion of saponification, a material, like jelly, is observed. Now remove the vessel from fire and add one or two gallon water so that soap solution is prepared. Pour light creosote oil of requisite quantity and carbolic acid. Now add the remaining water and stir the whole mass properly so that a good emulsion of soap and oil could be obtained. Keep this mixture for about 2-3 days in big drums, then pack in containers. Formulation for Good Quality Phenyle Rosin 11 Kgs. Caustic Soda 11/2 kgs. Water (to dissolve caustic soda) 6 gallons Creosote Oil 6 gallons Creosote Oil 6 gallons Soft Water 24 gallons Process: The process is quite similar to the previous one but the most important thing in this formula is that water should be soft. Special Type Phenyle Formula No. 1 Rosin 11 kgs. Castor Oil 4 kgs. Caustic Soda 2 kgs. Water (to dissolve caustic soda) 8 kgs. Light Creosote Oil 16 kgs. Cresylic Acid 2 ounce Soft Water 8 ounce

A good disinfectant should act as a deodorant and possess qualities effective against microorganisms of varying types. Phenyle type disinfectants fall in the category of Black oil Disinfectants and are extensively used for sanitation purposes in drains, floors, stables, dairy farms, hospitals etc. Black fluid disinfectants are manufactured by a large number of industries in India but their demand is still growing rapidly due to the increasing consumption. The product is marketed under the brand name phenyle. The raw materials and the machinery and equipment required for its'production is available indigeneously. The recommended plant capacity for economic production is around 500 kgs/day and the unit gives an annual return of around 25 % on the total capital investment. Keeping in view its extensive applications and increasing consumption the product provides a good scope for new entrants.
