RiverWalk & Talk

Meet Our Residents
A wonderful new couple recently joined the RiverWalk family. Visiting and talking to Shirley and Donald Feldstein was such a fun experience for me. Shirley was born in the Flatbush section of Brooklyn, where her father was the Rabbi of Talmud Torah of Flatbush on Avenue J. She grew up with one older brother and two younger sisters. Shirley went to school at the Yeshiva of Flatbush, Brooklyn College and Columbia School of Social Work. Her education led her to a fulfilling career as a social worker and psycho therapist. Shirley would go on to work as a social worker with groups and senior citizens, doing counseling and therapy. Shirley was on line registering for a graduate course at Columbia University when she met Donald. They fell madly in love and were married in 1954. Donald was born in Yorkville, NY. His father owned a shoe factory and after the Depression he became a custom peddler. Donald grew up with one sister, Lorelle, who now lives in Israel. He attended Elementary School PS 6, Stuyvesant High School and Hunter College. He also received a BA from City College and later a Doctorate in Social Work from Columbia University. Donald worked for many Jewish

philanthropic organizations as a social worker and director of social programs. Unfortunately, a series of strokes forced an early retirement from this wonderful career. He is currently enjoying a second career teaching short course at Bergen Community College. He is also preparing a series of classes for RiverWalk University. The couple lived in New York and Boston where Shirley gave birth to three babies. They were living in St. Louis when baby number four arrived. Eventually, the family moved to Teaneck, NJ where they lived for 37 years. Their children have given them many grandchildren over the years. Michael, their oldest son, lives in Stratford and is in marketing. He is the father of two children. Eric works for American Express and lives in Manhattan with his three children. Their daughter, Miriam, works in the Public Health sector and lives in Baltimore. She is the mother of four children. Ruth, their youngest, is a professor of American Cultural History and lives in Brookline, MA. She is the mother of three children. Don and Shirley have an active retirement, taking courses and attending concerts and movies. We wish them good health and many good years at RiverWalk.
