FROM AMERICA
AMY COHEN BANKER,
A TRIUMPH OF LINES AND COLORS

In Amy Cohen Banker the extraordinary beauty of the nature and the unusual
entries (passages) of the imaginary create a new bridge of connection between
New York and Western Europe in the art of XXI century.
In the art works of Amy the new pictorial representations of the classical mythology are born
from the rapid movements of the color that it is always load of feeling and almost narrative in
its impact with the senses, as it happens in the paintings entitled “Apollo” and “Orpheus and
Eurydice”, where the sense of the movement is amplified by the line.

In the works of Amy is very strong the contact between the American Art and the European
Culture. This cultural fusion is especially recognizable in the treatment of the themes con-
nected to the classical myths, with a look to the ancient epoch and the pagan iconografies of
the Art Greek-Roman.

Instead, the employment of the noisy color cheerful and positive is typically American.

This is a color that tells and it tells him through a soft interlacement of oscillating lines that lift
him in the poetry of the painting or that they go down in the lightest thoughts, that stop on
the island of the feeling or surrounds the shore of the memoirs, lines that lines that dance or
they jump on the roads ever crossed, lines that tremble under the strong throw of the sketch
as uneasy trajectories of the mind.

This game of lines is, in reality, a colossal theater of the communication magistrally realized
by the famous American painter Amy Cohen Banker that gives emphasis to the histories of
the pictorial story through the maximum expression of the color, a color that trionfa triumphs
opening a window of emotions to whom wants to listen the sweet and passionate song of the
contemporary art.

In the art of Amy happies sounds and vibrations of the brush describe the whole music of the
cosmos: the magic of the nature is in every fragment of color, in every fantastic image. The
nature painted by Amy has a great sense of conscience and deep sensibility through a free
and light pictorial search.

The majority of the blue color in some pictures of Amy underlines the cosmic and philosophi-

cal meaning of her painting. The examples are the paintings “Hercules”, “Little Revolution”,
“Boundaries” e “Reverie”. In fact the “Blues” series represents the goal of this philosophical
search. Red stains underline the pictorial ability of Amy in “Olivia’s Garden” and “Twelfth Night”.

The tones of the color are a hymn to the life and the love, a spring of the spiritual existence;
the fast movements of the lines are a symbol of struggle against the evil, against the winter of
the heart and the obstacles of the life.

Historical, fantastic, theatrical and musical characters, heroes of the past or the present, relive
through the artistic talent of Amy with stylistic novelty, without any search of physiognomy
that today could be too much academic.

Mysterious female or masculine figures appear on the surface from enigmatic environments,
underlining the importance of the painted character. It’s the example of “Lucretia” realized
with few evocative lines but of great optic effect or of “Alice Coltrane” with the face that is born
from an opaque atmosphere.

The decomposition of the volumes becomes particularly evident in the paintings realized in
the 2004 as “Jacob Wrestles the Angels” or “Opera House”. In these works the painting of Amy is
full of geometric idylls and of colored scannings.

Amy shows to possess only not great artistic abilities for her courage of abstraction and for
that splendid wild of the color what surprises the observer. Amy surprises above all for her
cloths full of numerous quotations literary and of unexpected cultural references that travel
without any geographical border, without any cultural prejudice. Her language is cultured
and aware, an anthropological language full of intellectual rivisitazioni, that is the fruit of the
inextinguishable thirst of knowledge that lives the mind of Amy Cohen Banker.

WHIMS OF AUTHOR.
AMY COHEN BANKER,
A PAINTING BETWEEN
LIGHT, FORM AND COLOR
Art Critical Text

Recently on the Italian artistic scene an original American artist is affirming,

skilled in to create dream atmospheres. Her name is Amy Cohen Banker and she
is not only a painter. Amy is an eclectic woman, endowed with great creative-
ness, that loves the art in all artistic expressions: from the photo to the sketch,
from the sculpture to the painting, from the installation to the watercolor and
even the poetry and the literature.
Her paintings are little hidden worlds that have a universal interest for the human history
through a new language and a “capricious” style. Whims of author are these expressions of line
of Amy, autonomous and frantic in their rebellious movements. Her paintings are suspended
between reality and imagination, between abstraction and figuration and they transport
symbolic colors on the dream dimension.

From “Sleeping Song” a clean, clear and bright painting emerges. The white brushstrokes
sometimes break the stains of color on the pictorial surface, creating some magnificent sourc-
es of light, where the eye stops for a long time and in depth to the search of a metaphysical
entity.

The art work “Darkness Falls” provokes strong emotions for the sure and trembling line.
The beauty of the white splendidly dominates the cloth hiding the green and brown color.
This painting is realized with the tones sudden and not gradual. Here we feel the expressive
strength of Amy Cohen Banker and her artistic passion.

Also the pictorial language of the artist American is eclectic and this very articulated style
is seen in “Aphrodite”, where the precious subject flies toward the universal harmony of the
color.

ARTIST STATEMENT
I work in a variety of mediums: acrylic, oil, pastels, aquarelle, oil sticks, varnishes, glazes, finishing and
surface techniques. I explore the basic issues of opacity, color, form, depth, obfuscation and revelation in life,
language and in art. I cannot help but be influenced by philosophy, poetry, literature, psychological symbolism,
fairy tales, music, myths, conceits, and metaphors, especially of strong feminist models: women’s conflicting
roles in a changing time throughout the centuries.
I am using background in design, two and three dimensional techniques and aesthetics. My background is
integrated with my writing, psychology, my early childhood and life experiences evolving as a woman and
mother combining international study to explore these issues in an organized but abstract way. I tend to
reinvent the same themes, work from a structure and then proceed by distressing, demolishing, recreating and
conserving. My major themes are inner restoration and survival, challenging always reality vs. myth.
