Bringing things into focus

I love photography. The ability to capture life in a split second and freeze it into a lasting memory has a certain magic, dont you think? Im reminded of this every day when looking at the work Granite Bay View staff photographer Philip Wood and freelance photographer Anne Stokes bring back to the newsroom. I saw that same magic when looking at the images of photographer Teri Fode. Theres nothing like a professional photographer to make you feel special be it your wedding day or high school graduation. Chef Sovy Medved, an alumna of the California Culinary Academy in San Francisco, prepares her signature dishes in a tiny 400 sq. ft. kitchen, one of the smallest in the Sacramento area. Its just enough space for Chef Sovy to prep and prepare her authentic and fresh gourmet meals such as Pan Roasted Duck Breast with Berry Sauce, Rack of Lamb, and a variety of Red, Yellow or Green Thai Curry dishes to loyal customers. The organic mixed green salad with aged homemade balsamic vinaigrette dressing topped with shaking beef or wild-caught salmon is a local favorite. In fact, all of her fish dishes are prepared with only wild caught seafood. Comfort foods such as the Breakfast Burrito, Beef Pot Roast, Beef Chili and Baby Back Ribs are served all day. You will enjoy the Crme Brule and Crme Caramel dessert made fresh by Chef Sovy daily. For that special occasion, order a specialty cake from Pullman Kitchen prepared specially by the famous bakery, Ettores on Fair Oaks Blvd. in Sacramento. Breakfast, lunch and dinner served all day from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. from Tuesday thru Sunday. Call-in orders recommended for takeout and if you plan to dine-in at one of the tables in the Market Hall. Pullman Kitchens services for Cuisine for Fitness, Cuisine for Seniors, and full service catering have received rave reviews. Ask Chef Sovy to cater your next event. 916.370.3223

HOW TO CONTROL RISK FACTORS FOR HEART DISEASE:

Lower your cholesterol Cholesterol is a waxy substance found in the bodys cells. Lower it by exercising regularly and eating a diet low in saturated fat. Lower your blood pressure Your heart must work harder when your blood pressure is high. When this occurs for an extended time, the heart can enlarge and arteries can become scarred and hardened. Treat it with medication and changes in your diet and lifestyle. Stop smoking cigarettes Smoking promotes heart disease by quickening the development of atherosclerosis, Dr. Reetu Sharma, reducing your HDL (good) cardiologist, Sutcholesterol and ter Roseville Medraising your ical Center blood pressure. Get in shape Your risk of heart disease increases if you are overweight. Obesity raises cholesterol and blood pressure and can lead to diabetes, another risk factor for heart disease. Limit your alcohol intake Having one alcoholic beverage daily may reduce your risk of heart disease. Drinking more than this can raise blood pressure and triglyceride levels.

continued from page 4 calorie ingredients. She adds spices with health benefits to her dishes, such as turmeric to her Thai yellow curry chicken. Turmeric has been shown to help ward off Alzheimers disease and cancer, and aid in weight management by boosting metabolism. Doctors recommend that people consume hearthealthy foods, such as blueberries, salmon, soy protein, oatmeal, spinach, carrots, almonds, flaxseed, walnuts, sweet potatoes, asparagus and red bell peppers. People should limit unhealthy fats and cholesterol, and choose low-fat protein sources such as beans, broccoli, fish and poultry. Consuming more fruits and vegetables and reducing sodium intake are also suggested. Another important habit: control portion size, which Medved helps customers do. Through her Cuisine for Fitness monthly meal service, she creates menus that meet the clients caloric needs. Each meal contains a lean protein, a whole grain and fresh vegetables. There is currently a waiting list for the service. Medved prepares all the meals herself either breakfast, lunch and a snack, or dinner for three
days, which customers pick up twice weekly. Its a one-person kitchen, so no matter what, it looks like Im always busy, Medved said. I always find something to do. Sutter Roseville Medical Center Cardiologist Dr. Reetu Sharma says people should work with their doctors to control heart disease risk factors. You can reduce your risk of heart disease and a heart attack by seeing your doctor for regular checkups to evaluate risk factors, Sharma said. The doctor suggests people have their cholesterol checked at least every five years if its under 200 milligrams per deciliter and more frequently if its higher or borderline. Blood pressure should be checked at least once a year if its normal, and on a regular basis if its high. People should know if there is a family history of heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure or high cholesterol. So why not spend Valentines Day vowing to take better care of your heart, for yourself and the ones you love.

Teri Fode says senior portraits are her favorite. They want to feel like a model for the day, and we provide that, Fode says.

hen it comes to smiling for the camera, Teri Fodes clients are grinning from ear to ear. Thats because Fode, a local portrait stylist, knows how to make her clients both look and feel great. Fode has been in the photography business for 10 years and recently opened a Granite Bay studio in Quarry Ponds a beautiful location, befitting the lovely faces that will adorn the spaces walls like compelling pieces of art. Fode comes by her artists eye naturally. My grandparents were photographers for 40 years they had a studio on Main Street in Chico. I really grew up in a photography studio, Fode said. Though she spent some time in the title and escrow business, ultimately she couldnt stay away from the lens. I feel like the business portion of my photography studio has really benefitted from that business background, she said.

But now clients can come to our Quarry Ponds studio, by appointment, and see the actual gallery which will be displayed in our beautiful studio. Fode will continue to shoot at a variety of locations, including clients homes, but will be set up to do baby portraiture at the studio. We love newborns it takes a lot of skill and patience for newborn photo shoots. A lot of consideration for babys feeding schedule, and accommodating the mommies, too, she said. Of course, teens who dont like to be fussed over are accommodated, as well. We love to include sports equipment, hobbies the guys have a lot more fun than they would have thought, she said. While Fode suggests lining up an appointment for senior portraits the summer before, or the fall of senior year, February is not too late. Its never too late to do a senior portrait, she said. You want to make sure you meet graduation deadlines you want your wallet photos to include in your announcements. You want the big portrait to display it at the graduation party.

Fode said that customers typical reaction to their portraits is, wow. People say they love their photos, she said. We really strive to have our clients feel like they are getting a great value. Its obvious that her clients, both young and old, love Fodes work. Teri is incredible. During your session she puts you at ease and you have fun. year-old thats more appropriate for a 20-year-old. And dont just get a gift certificate. An envelope with a piece of paper is not personal, Alicea said. But if you do give a gift certificate, give something else along with it, like perfume or a pretty robe. 2. What does she look like? It helps the staff if you can share details like her hair, eye and complexion color, her size and age. If she has the skin tone of a winter person, dont get her pale colors, get something that

tion when she stops to admire a style, color or other detail when you walk by a store window in the mall. If youre still not sure, take her on a shopping trip to Yves and let her select something. 4. Whats her comfort zone? Is she shy or outgoing? Some women dont like their bodies. If thats so, then dont shop for something thats sheer, instead select silk.
5. Above all, let her know you took time to shop. Give her

something you personally picked out, not a piece of paper with Love You on it. Give her a box with something in it, said Alicea. Im very passionate about what I do, Alicea said. And very passionate about helping guys find the perfect gift.

My husband, Steve, surprised me by switching our first dance wedding song with one that he wrote and had our friends band sing... it was so touching and incredible! 13 years later, he still surprises with flowers and poems. It is embarrassing that he is m ore romantic than me... but how can I top that :)

Hawks delivers on the goods

BY TOBY LEWIS

GRANITE BAY VIEW

n all my years of eating, there are two things I really appreciate when it comes to dining out: Service and execution. And in my experience, Hawks Restaurant at the Quarry Ponds in Granite Bay delivers on both. First, lets talk about execution. I have been to Hawks on several occasions and each time I appreciate the restaurants casual-yet-refined atmosphere.

Executive chef Michael Fagnoni, who moved from San Francisco to open the restaurant with his wife Molly Hawks five years ago, says it was never the chef-couples intention to open up a fine dining restaurant in Granite Bay. We really just wanted to create a comfortable, everyday restaurant, Fagnoni said, on a recent visit. Everybody kind of thinks of it as being a little dressy, and that wasnt our intention. Thats just kind of how it came out in the percep-

tion and its working for us. Fagnonis humility might speak to the accommodating, yet sophisticated nature of the

restaurant, but it hardly represents the merit of the food. Fagnoni creates eloquent, well-thought out dishes, artfully prepared from scratch with as many fresh, local ingredients as possible and he uses only what is in season. As a result, the menu at Hawks changes about eight or nine times throughout the year. We never do a full menu change, because that becomes insane, Fagnoni said. Every few weeks, well change two or

three appetizers, two or three entrees and just kind of keep it fluid like that. Fagnoni said there are a few items that have remained on the menu since the restaurant opened five years ago, such as the gnocchi a soft potato dumpling served with sauted hen of the woods mushrooms and parmesan cream sauce. Other staples on the menu include the duck confit and the braised short ribs, which are slow-roasted with 50 pounds of onions for six to eight hours.

12

FEBRUARY GRANITE BAY VIEW

Fagnoni said the short ribs and the duck confit are always on the menu, but the set-ups change depending on what is in season. On my recent rainynight visit, I decided to go the comfort route, opting for the short ribs, which were served with a pomme puree (silky smooth mashed potatoes), red wine jus and root vegetables. My date tried the petrale sole, which our server, Rod Vasquez, informed us was caught the day before off the coast of Monterey and pan roasted, served on a bed of braised leeks, pioppini mushrooms and poached Caribbean shrimp. Now, lets talk about service. Nothing compliments a fine meal better than impeccable service from an attentive staff that is well-trained and can answer any question you throw at them. One thing I have learned in years of dining out is to trust the recommendation of your server. At legitimate establishments such as Hawks, it is more likely you will get an honest recommendation and less likely that the server will recommend something that is old or that the chef is just trying to get rid of. Such was the case with our order. Vasquez gave nice wine pairing recommendations to compliment our meal and even recommended that we change the order of our coursing. For our first course, I ordered the house-made gnocchi to be followed by the mushroom soup for me and the beet salad for her.

Vasquez recommended we try the gnocchi for our second course since it is more rich, a fine idea which worked quite well. Both courses were paired with a 2009 Anderson Valley Pinot Noir for her and a 2006 Provenance Merlot from the Napa Valley for me. For the third course, Vasquez recommended I try the 2009 Chappallet Mountain Cuvee, a cabernet blend, to compliment the richness of my short ribs. Another fine idea. Recommendations aside, the attentiveness of the staff throughout the course of our meal was unrivaled. Throughout each course, back servers and wait staff replaced all old silverware with new, continually filled our water glasses and generally let us know they were present should we need something without intruding or interrupting our conversation. Vasquez knew the answer to every question we asked about the food. He was obviously experienced and well-trained. We give everybody all the tools they need to succeed, Fagnoni said. You cant expect some-

Valentines Day
As the day to commemorate your special someone draws close, I recommend treating them to such an encounter as I experienced. The restaurant will be offering a special Valentines Day menu for three days a three-course Sunday Brunch on Feb. 12, and a four-course dinner menu on Feb. 13 and 14. Im not going to give away all the selections the restaurant will be offering, but I would bet that it is not to disappoint. The menus are, however, available on the restaurants website.

body to know something if you havent given them the proper tools to begin with. Fagnoni sits down with his staff before every shift to educate and taste items off the menu so that the servers know exactly how to describe it to the guest. It might seem trivial, but many restaurants dont do that and many restaurants suffer for it. the Hawks Bar sounded like something that we had to have. The Hawks Bar begins with a bottom layer of chocolate brownie, and is stacked with layers of white chocolate and caramel sauce, caramelized Rice Krispie treat, bavarois (cream Anglais with added whipped cream and gelatin), candied pecans and a sliver of valrhona chocolate over the top. Served on the side is the house-made cocoa nib gelato. Its our version of a candy bar, said pastry chef Edward Martinez. Its classical technique executed very well. We couldnt have agreed more.

Jon Gray creates sculptures for your hand (or neck, or ears)
BY TINKA DAVI

Art that dazzles

on Gray is an artist and sculptor. His media is white gold, yellow gold, diamonds and gemstones and he creates stunning and unusual rings, pendants and other fine jewelry thats on display in his gallery at Quarry Ponds in Granite Bay. Gray describes his work as different from the rest of the pack. And thats true. His custom designs are unlike jewelry seen in other shops. Indeed the diamonds are dazzling the designs are definitely different. One of his rings has two geometric-style bands on either side of a 1-3/4 carat diamond. One band is white gold, the other yellow gold and each band has a single row of diamonds down the side. On the back or the underside of the band is another small stone. It isnt visible until the wearer holds out the palm of her hand. Another unique creation is a ring designed for the left hand. It sits at an angle on the pinkie finger. This looks good on a person with long fingers but also makes a shorter finger look longer, he said. Again, theres a stone on the flat, palm side of the band. It could be a diamond, a childs birthstone or the husbands birthstone, he said. There must be hundreds of rings in the shop, and, like a gallery, each can be viewed as an exquisite piece of art. Among his creations is a ring with a center blue sapphire stone, diamonds and pink sapphire stone on the back. Another ring has rose gold and white gold bands with a pink

diamond. His rings are stunning, unusual and large with the center stones elevated, yet protected by bands on each side. I see sculpture in motion on these rings, Gray said. Why not see it from all directions? Hence the designs on all sides and the stone on the back. Whats great about being an artist is to create something that never existed before, Gray said. Not many people can do that. Jewelry is so personal its one of the most personal gifts. And it can be handed down, be a legacy. Jewelry is a lot like furniture, Gray said Theres a lot going on behind the scenes. That includes durability of the pieces, what goes into making

You can enjoy jewelry every minute, every day for years.
Jon Gray, owner, JD Grays Designer Jewelry

them, how long theyll last and the quality. He likes to design pieces that are personalized and approaches jewelry from a sculptural and an artistic perspective. He can look at a persons rings and tell when they were made because of their style. A lot of personality and character goes into Grays designs. He prefers white and yellow gold rings and doesnt recommend silver for the long term.

When Im designing I take into account the customers personality and the hand and whats going to look good. Many women are critical of their hands, he said, but with rings as beautiful and stunning as his, who is looking at hands? People are admiring their rings. For wedding rings Gray suggests couples may want to start out with a smaller center stone and change it for a larger stone later on. They can go with a nice setting with room to grow, he said. Once youve got the setting or foundation, you can add to it over the years. The original stone could be redesigned into a pendant. Many of my customers are going into their second or third

marriages and have a little more to spend. They dont necessarily want both an engagement and wedding ring, he said. By the second, third or fourth time around they get more creative. His regular customers dont typically shop for jewelry just for Valentines Day; however, he has several gift items pendants, watches, bracelets, earrings and a selection of Italian Murano and Art Glass beads. The beads can be added to bracelets or combined for a pendant. In addition to designing jewelry, Gray does custom work and repairs. I take things that people already own and make something new, he said. For example, one woman brought in old pieces of jewelry and Gray created a bracelet for her husband for their 30th anniversary. Another person asked Gray to create a bracelet with several links, each depicting someone in the mans life

JEWELRY: In addition to design, Gray also does custom work and repairs
continued from page 16 his father, children, grandkids. Each link has the family members birthstone and name on the back. People are often hesitant to redesign a family jewel, but it still can retain its significance as moms ring as its passed on to each generation. It can be redesigned completely or have something added to it. He recently redesigned a pendant a womans father had given her into a ring. Grays shop is a gallery of jewelry in several glass cases of different shapes along the walls and in the center. Theyre ideally designed for browsing. A high percentage of my inventory is my designs, he said. Several pieces of art glass also are displayed. Its jewelry for the home, he said. Gray has had his own jewelry store in various Sacramento locations for 29 years and has been in the business for about 40 years. He originally was headed for law school, but didnt get accepted right away due to a lack of openings in the program. He minored in art in college and enjoyed sculpture. When he didnt get into law school, his mother encouraged him to take jewelry classes. He was reluctant at first, but finally enrolled. I found I was a natural at it. Gray is a perfectionist. Lines have to be straight, curves perfect. That takes time, he said. A lot of designers dont have patience. They dont take the time to do detail work, he said. His creations are evidence of the time he spends on each piece. Jewelry has significance, longevity, tradition and history. In terms of things you can buy and get value out of, its jewelry, he said. You can enjoy jewelry every minute, every day for years.

f quality construction is important to you, then 9819 Hopkins Court is a dream come true. A beautiful blend of centuries-old tradition and modern-day amenities, this home is awe-inspiring, from its massive, bright-white wainscoting, chair rails and pilasters, to its delicately carved wood and stunning carpet designs. The exterior of the home is all formal a one-story brick colonial but once inside, the home offers plenty of flair while staying true to traditional style. The inside of the home is very traditional, yet has a little of a Mediterranean feel, said Eve Fenstermaker of Granite Bay Properties. The inside is very elegant. continued from page 22 that match distressed cabinets, are unique features in the homes kitchen. An oversized granite slab creates a dramatic island, one that is triple bull nosed and filled with warm, neutral colors that match the rooms wood beautifully. Double sinks grace the island, while a set of triple sinks in the front of the kitchen gaze through a large picture window a view any home chef will love. The room also includes antique-looking, French plumbing fixtures, Viking Professional double ovens, six-burner cooktop with griddle, beveled ceramic tile counters, and brushed and beveled ceramic tiles in a decorative backsplash. The family room has wall-to-wall Karastan wool carpet reminiscent of a grand library. French doors lead to the backyard that contains a gated pool with three waterfalls and a slide. The formal living room and dining rooms are steps down from the front entry, and both include high-end wool patterned carpets in beautiful neutral tones, bright white wainscoting and fireplaces. The home has five fireplaces, Fenstermaker

said. While the home is large, yet intimate, the master is a room with possibly the most wow factor. Larger than most family rooms, this master contains a large seating area, with room for sofa and chairs, and a desk or office area, as well. A variety of ceiling treatments and a stained glass transom add height, light, and wondrous appeal to the spacious room. Dual rain shower fixtures and glass-block tiles create a well-lit, airy room, while a sunken, jetted tub with marble tile adds a spa-like feel. The home includes an in-hall dual desk area, perfect for kids homework stations. Built-in cabinetry, bookshelves and skylights offer ample storage and sun in a variety of locations. Bedrooms include ensuite baths, and the laundry room is the size of many homes bedrooms. The home includes a 1,000-square-foot upstairs bonus room with full bath, and comes with approved plans and pad for an additional garage or guest house that can be attached, if desired, through the upstairs bonus. The oversized four-car garage includes built-ins that run the length of the space, and the backyard includes a loggia and two barbecue areas.

Josue and Debbie: A Marine Corp love story

eing that Valentines Day is only days away and romance is in the air, I thought it would be fit- Mark Soto ting to tell you Sideline about a recent Conversations wedding I had the honor to attend. The wedding was between two high school sweethearts that grew up on the hard streets of Compton. This was no ordinary wedding and is truly a beautiful love story. The couples names are Josue and Debbie Barron. Josue was a solid basketball athlete in high school and Debbie was his trusted girlfriend. They both were not the best of students and the streets tried to pull them away into a lifestyle of gangs and despair. But Josue and Debbie both desired something different. After graduation, Josue had a hard time finding work, and to make ends meet for him and Debbie he decided to pursue his dream of becoming a U.S. Marine. Josues family tried to discourage him but he desired a different life for Debbie and him. He saw the Marine Corp as his way to get this. Josue joined the Marines, and if you know anything about the Marines, it is not an easy lifestyle for married couples. The common quote around married couples who are part of the Marines is, If the Marines wanted you to be married they would have issued you one! The Marines do it their way or no way at all and many times due to their strict ways marriages suffer. Josue and Debbie were boyfriend and girlfriend at the time of his joining and Debbie followed him. In the summer of 2010, Josue got the news that he was deploying to Afghanistan to one of the harshest war torn areas in this country. The area is called Sangin, and the British military who occupied this area could not control it and lost many men. Josues Marine battalion was being sent in to take control of the area, and it was not

going to be easy. The Taliban had dug-in. The young couple knew full well what this deployment may mean to their relationship. The odds of coming home injured or even killed were high. So before his departure they had a quick, nonplanned marriage by the justice of the peace. It was not the wedding they desired but they had limited resources and they both wanted to make things right and bond their love before his deployment. Upon Josues arrival in Sangin his Marine battalion quickly began their mission of eradicating the Taliban. The Marines were met with heavy resistance mostly from roadside bombs, and Josues life changed forever one morning when he stepped on one. The next thing Josue remembers after stepping on the IED is waking up in Bethesda. Josue lost his left leg and had shrapnel wounds all over his body. His face also took heavy shrapnel damage and he lost his left eye. Debbie rushed to his aid and along with doctors, family, and therapist they began the process of recovery.

For over a year, Josue learned how to walk again on prosthetics, learned how to see again with one eye, and recovered from the many scars that the shrapnel made to his body. Debbie stayed by his side and helped him all along the way. A Marine Colonel named Al Ransom and his wife Cathie owned a large wedding resort called Los Willows. Ransom met the couple after he told a friend who works as a therapist at Balboa Navy Hospital that he was interested in providing a free wedding to a military couple to thank all servicemen and servicewomen for their sacrifices. After Barron was suggested to be the recipient of the free wedding, Los Willows Estates staff helped him plan a surprise proposal to his wife to renew their vows. The couple was invited to tour Los Willows Estates. Debbie wasnt at all expecting the proposal when her husband got down on his knee and proposed. Debbie said yes, and with help from staff at Los Willows Estates they began to plan her dream wedding, which took place at the estates lakeside gazebo with a tented reception area for 100 guests. Weve always wanted to do something worthwhile for somebody, Ransom said. We have all the vendors. We have the site. We called our vendors and it was contagious giving. We dont want them to pay anything, Al said. Its really going to be a dream wedding. Whatever the bride wants shes getting. The wedding was Jan. 15 and was possibly the most beautiful wedding I have ever seen. The value of the wedding was estimated to be over $50,000 dollars and every item was donated by vendors of the resort. The reason why I tell you this story of true love and commitment is to remind us all to appreciate the loved ones in our lives each day. You may never know when your last day with them could be your last. Every day should be Valentines Day!

eens need exercise, too. So get em off the couch, pull the cell phone out of their hands and send them to the field and the gym. Remember the good old days, when the only video game available was a pinball machine down at the local soda shop? Well, those days are long gone. Todays teens have access to more video games and other technology that keeps them away from the great outdoors and off the basketball court. Instead of moving their growing bodies, they spend countless hours pushing buttons, texting friends and playing video games. But if exercise isnt a regular

part of your teens life, big trouble could be right down the road. Why should your teen get into the exercise routine, and how can you make it happen?

Why exercise matters

Take a look around at teens. They have countless social media tools that are supposed to help them be more connected with others than ever. Unfortunately, these social sites can cause teens to forget

how to socialize with real people in real life. Get these kids to the gym and encourage them to exercise with other teens, and you give them an instant lesson in socialization. But exercise is about more than being socially adept. Its about good health. And in case youve not picked up a newspaper or magazine in the last 10 years, you should know that there is an obesity epidemic currently taking place. Its affected plenty of adults, but it is now affecting teens as well especially as they spend less time exercising and more time sitting around watching television, playing video games, texting and chatting online.

For teens, exercising can be fun and socially stimulating like taking a hike with a friend.

Get your teen exercising today, and youll help them obtain and maintain a healthy weight and develop lifelong healthy habits.

How to get them moving

Sometimes, getting a teenager to do something is as easy as teaching a rhinoceros to fetch. Dont let their attitude get you down. Remember your own attitude problems as a teenager, take a deep breath, and prepare to

put up a fight. When youre going into battle with your teen, try these tips out. Make it fun. Remember when your teen was a toddler? Exercise wasnt something you forced him or her to do. It just happened, via hide-andseek, tag, or just running all day long. Find what physical activities interest your teen, and encourage him or her to get out and do it. Up the chores. Is your teen lazing around the house doing nothing,

while youre working frantically to keep everything in order? Flip your teens world upside down by having him or her take over some of the more physically demanding chores. Have your teen rake leaves, plant flowers, scrub toilets and take out the garbage. It may not be the same as lifting weights, but itll get your teens body on the move! Do it together. If your child isnt motivated to get in the gym on his or her own, offer to do it

together. Whether you lift weights, ride bikes, swim or hike, doing it as a family makes it easier to keep your teen on an exercise schedule. Take it easy. Your teen needs to exercise. There is no question about it. Just dont let this need override your parenting know-how. Ever tried to force your teen to do something he or she didnt want to do? Didnt work so well, did it? Remember this when working with your teen, and encourage your teen

gently. You may be surprised at the end result. How much? While medical experts normally recommend adults get 30 minutes of exercise five or more days a week, the same doesnt hold true for teenagers. Instead, try to get your teen to exercise for at least 60 minutes most days of the week. It doesnt have to be incredibly vigorous. A light jog, a game of kickball, or riding bikes will do the trick.
Set up for success.

environment is one that makes exercise easy, a home with nothing going on outside, but a bigscreen TV inside with every video game known to man does not encourage exercise. If basketball hoops, volleyball nets and tennis racquets are around, theyll get used!

Worlds of color collide at Blue Line Gallery

Greg Kondos, Chinese artist Shimo in two-man show
BY PAUL CAMBRA

PHOTOS BY PHILIP WOOD GRANITE BAY VIEW

Greg Kondos looks over his work that is part of the Blue Line Gallery show. He has teamed up with Chinese artist Shimo for an East meets west exhibit. Its not a competition, Kondos said. In this show, you will see both worlds.

reg Kondos took one look at the Blue Line Gallery and decided it should be a two-person show. Its not that Kondos, 88, doesnt have the body of work to fill it. The artist has been painting all his life, with public collections in the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento, as well as museums in Yosemite, Washington, D.C., France, and at Sacramento City College, where he taught for 27 years. No, Kondos saw an opportunity for something really unique in Roseville, so he arranged to have Chinese artist Shimo share the stage. East meets west in a

way, said Kondos. Its not a competition. We are brothers in the venture. We can communicate with the lines we create. We complement each other, not because we have to, because its there. We should be considered scientists in color. Kondos is known as a master of contemporary landscape art. Blue skies and vibrant colors meld together to form naturallooking landscapes. Even elements of dominance are soft and subdued. My studio is the world, he said. Im so fortunate with my life and my career. Who is this little Greek boy? How can I have this privilege to work as a painter while others struggle with dull things? I am just so damn lucky. Julie Hirota, Roseville Arts

CEO, feels the people of Roseville should feel fortunate as well. To bring a Chinese artist to Roseville is an incredible feat, Hirota said. Weve been able to bring two incredible artists to Roseville to share something that crosses cultural boundaries. To Kondos, any difference in their work goes back further than either mans lifetime. Think about the history of the two worlds, he said. Chinese light is overall. Western light is where the shadows fall. I sense the Chinese look right at the sun, while the western world puts the sun in the background to cast shadows. Finally, when they begin to complement each other, we have a show.

Documentary looks at cleft palates in Philippines

Granite Bay graduate Lindsey Rowe, 29, is working on a documentary film called Gwapa (Beautiful) about two Filipino families struggles to help their kids with cleft deformities.

indsey Rowe believes every child deserves a beautiful and healthy future, which is why shes lending her creative talents to making a documentary film about cleft palates. Cleft deformities can cause breathing, eating and speech complications unless repaired through surgery, and its a health issue Rowe, 29, knows about firsthand. While Rowe has witnessed the struggle that children with facial deformities and their families endure, shes also been privy to the successes. I have also experienced the resilience and spirit of those same children who are able to

overcome their challenges and I have been inspired by them to bring awareness to this cause, Rowe said. She and three other pro-bono filmmakers are making a feature-length documentary film called Gwapa (Beautiful), which follows two Filipino families struggles for a healthy future for their children born with cleft palates. In the United States, cleft palate and cleft lip is the most common birth defect, affecting one in every 600 newborns, according to the Cleft Palate Foundation. The causes are due to a combination of genetic and

environmental factors. American babies often have access to surgery, dental and orthodontic care, and speech therapy, unlike children in developing countries, where cleft palates typically go unrepaired. Every year, 4,000 to 5,000 Filipino children are born with a cleft deformity. Thirsty Girl Films aims to bring awareness to this correctable birth defect and the need for free reconstructive surgeries in the Philippines. Just one surgery can change a childs life forever, Rowe said. She and her fellow filmmakers, along with 50 medical professionals from Davis-based Faces of Tomorrow, were on an island province of the Philippines called Bohol in January to revisit children for their second round of filming. The first half of the film was shot on location last year. That means time away from Rowes job. She now works in Hollywood as a publicist for an

organization of health professionals who go on trips to provide free medical and surgical services to kids with facial Lindsey Rowe, deformities. Granite Bay I met Meg graduate and through a filmmaker mutual friend and fell in love with the project because (of my) two adopted siblings with clefts, Rowe said. Serendipitously the doctors from the organization we are following performed cleft repairs on my siblings. Rowes dad, Scott Rowe, of Roseville, said hes proud of his daughter for aspiring to improve the lives of children. We are truly proud of Lindsey for her involvement to raise awareness and help facilitate this great work, he said. (She) brings joy to our family, her

work and now to the bigger world. He said the cleft palate condition carries pretty severe ramifications personal and social, until its fixed and once repaired, the child can live a full and normal life. The film crew fundraised most of their budget through Indie GoGo, an Internet crowdfunding platform for creative projects. They raised more than $12,000 in 21 days through donations. The group needs another $10,000 for post production, including editing, color correction, sound design and score composition. They hope to complete the film by June and hit the festival market. Since many people in wealthy countries arent aware of the problem, this documentary will shed light on a culture hardly explored and how its poorest deal with personal strife, Rowe said.

he season of giving lasts a little bit longer in Granite Bay. Christmas in January started out nine years ago as an Eagle project conceived by scout Chris Darcy and is now an annual community service drive for Boy Scout Troop 121. At Christmas, it was in the running for top high school football play of the year on www.maxpreps.com. The popular high school sports website held a nationwide play-of-the-year tournament in December with online voting determining each winner, and a one-handed catch in the end zone by Grizzlies receiver Adam Wagner advanced to the final round. Granite Bay, the eventual Sac-Joaquin Section Division I champion, and Nevada Union were tied at 14 when Wagner made his highlight-reel play on a 23-yard pass from quarterback Brendan Keeney. Wagner said the Grizzlies, who went on to win 28-21, had three receivers in a tight bunch on the left side. One receiver ran a route to the left, another went 10 yards and out, and Wagner ran to the corner of the end zone. Brendan had three options, said Wagner, who split coverage by a cornerback and the safety. I looked up and saw the ball coming to me. We practiced that so many times. Once I saw the ball, I fended off the corner with my left hand. I remember seeing it. I bobbled it a little bit. When I stood up, I couldnt even believe I just did it. Wagner, speaking by phone during the ride to Grass Valley for an SFL wrestling meet, noticed one day on maxpreps.com the play was rated one of the top 25 catches of the season. The next week, it was one of 16 plays entered in MaxMadness. Steve Montoya, director of editorial and content, execu-

order: A 78-yard game-winning touchdown bomb from Cooper Bateman of Salt Lake City-Cottonwood to Sione Moli, who

caught the ball in stride more than 65 yards from the point of release. A blocked field goal that was recovered by the kicking team Cedar Grove, N.J. and run a short distance for a touchdown with the ball carrier in the middle of a mob of players from each team. And a double pass by Costa Mesa-Estancia on which Levi Stillman did two 360-degree

spins in succession to avoid two tackles before heaving a 39-yard scoring pass as he was hit again to Jazz Hill. Wagners one-hander finally lost in the final to a short touchdown run by quarterback Harvey Evan of Keystone Heights, Fla. Evan began to scramble from just inside the 15-yard line when he was stripped of the ball. He reached behind his back and spun 360 degrees to grab the ball, headed right and then cut back left to the end zone. Montoya said the two finalists were the two top vote-getters in each round. Wagners closest margin of victory was about 60 percent to 40 percent, and the final was tight, a difference of a couple thousand in a vote that received close to 50,000 total. You could tell what communities got behind each play, Montoya said. Ultimately, thats how he made it to the finals. Wagner said he tried to get everyone he could to vote. It just kept moving on and moving on, said Wagner, an All-SFL selection who caught nine passes for 153 yards in the game. It was fun for me all the way through. It was pretty exciting to see my face on there and stuff.

More ways to help your anxious child beat stress

Sheri Hitchings You and Your Kids

in a two-part article. See the first part in the January View.

bed. Find creative outlets, art and music and other forms of fun escapes as antidotes.

Understand and do not blame

A child wants you to listen, and he wants you to understand. The key is to understand but do not blame. The child probably feels out of control, misunderstood and wants to do things his way. The anxious feelings are very real. Overlooking them, however, can lead the child to depression, eating disorders and other difficulties.

Ten ways to stop anxiety

Use these simple techniques anywhere if anxiousness is on the rise: Inhale peace of mind, exhale anxiety Find someone to talk with Engage in aerobic action Learn to relax your body Trick your anxious thinking Listen to some music Find pleasant distractions Do something exciting Embrace the here and now Exercise is key!

es are peaches, acacia berries, blueberries, almonds and Maca root. Stay away from precooked and boxed dinners prepare home cooked meals whenever possible.

Stress calmers
Check the childs diet if he is stressed. For example too much caffeine and sugar can increase feelings of anxiety and stress. First thing to do is cut back on things that are bad. Try berries, guacamole, mixed nuts, oranges and asparagus. For some children, a glass of warm milk at bedtime allows for more sleep time.

Research appropriate foods that calm the body and allow the child as much opportunity as possible to live normally.

Sleep deprivation
If sleeping is a problem, work on a consistent routine, which would provide time for the child to unwind. Teach strategies to reduce stress, like listening to and learning to relax with effective relaxation tapes. Also encourage yoga. Provide a pacifying back rub while encouraging your child with loving words. Have your child do breathing exercises in the morning and before going to

Benefits of intervention
Work with the childs doctor. A physical is needed to get to the root of the problem. Also seek the advice of a nutritionist to establish a balanced diet with foods that provide nutrients and are stress relievers.

Food and eating

The childs diet should mostly be fruits, vegetables, low-fat dairy foods, lean meats, fish and limited amounts of grain or grain products. Choose fresh fruits over canned. Great choic-

Interventions that work

Physical: Be sure the child eats right and exercises sufficiently. The body cant be fooled so dont take exercise half-heartedly. Encourage

breathing exercises after waking up in the morning and before going to bed. Behavioral: Develop healthy sleeping patterns. Sleep must be at least seven to eight hours per day as it rejuvenates the body and keeps the child refreshed. Cultivate social relationships and learn to react positively to situations by training the mind to overcome anxiety. Dont forget to encourage a sense of humor and role model positive behaviors. Cognitive: Play relaxing music when the child is stressed and teach him how to meditate. For real change, keep yourself and your child motivated and inspired. Using these ideas, you will be amazed with the positive progress.
