Dual Density Sonde - DD Series

The Dual Density tool provides essential lithology

and porosity information in boreholes as small as 76 > Long and Short Spaced
mm (3.0 ins) in diameter.
Densities for coal
The DD sonde is a dual detector density tool which fingerprint and quality
uses the same advanced processing as our full size
tools. The near and far measurements are > Fully compensated

combined in a model-based algorithm which
automatically corrects for hole size and mud density enhanced resolution
variations, as well as mudcake effects. This results in a
Compensated Density field log which needs no
further corrections. Optional VECTAR processing of
C

the compensated density produces a log with the

spatial resolution of the short spaced log.

The upper log example depicts a typical coal, shale

and sandstone sequence logged with a DD Series
sonde.

Thin bed analysis uses higher sampling rates and

lower logging speeds. The lower logging speeds
ensure acceptable counting statistics. The lower
example shows a detailed scale presentation over a
3 metre coal bearing interval using data sampled
every 0.01 metre.

Dual Neutron Sonde - NN Series

Dual Neutron logs are sensitive to variations in rock

type and porosity. > Fully compensated
NN series tools operate in boreholes as small as 63 > Near and Far detectors
mm (2.5 ins) in diameter. They measure the flux of for ratio processing
thermal neutrons at two detectors; the count rate
ratio produces a Compensated Porosity log that has and greater immunity
greater immunity to variations in borehole size and to borehole effects
borehole fluid salinity than single detector designs.
> Integral Gamma Ray
Logs are presented in porosity units, and are
calibrated to give true porosities in clean, water-filled
limestone formations. The combination of density
and neutron porosity allows the simultaneous
determination of porosity and lithology (including
clay content), and is sensitive to the presence of gas.

An integral Gamma Ray is used for correlation with

tools and provides an evaluation of clay content.

Multi-Channel Compensated Sonic - MS Series

The Multi-Channel Compensated Sonic measures

compressional (P-wave) slowness (inverse of velocity) > Borehole compensated
for porosity, lithology and mechanical properties
applications. A variant is used as a Cement Bond Log. compressional logs
> Improved velocity
The tool contains one transmitter and four receivers,
giving four transit times. In compressional slowness estimates from
(Dt) mode, pairs of first arrivals are combined to damaged intervals
eliminate the fluid path and provide formation Dt
measurements at spacings from 24 in to 48 in (60 cm
> Mechanical Properties
to 120 cm) from the transmitter. The recorded curves and Fracture Height
are a high resolution 20 cm curve, a 40 cm curve, a processing
long 60 cm which provides better estimates of in-situ
velocities in the presence of near wellbore damage
and an un-despiked 20 cm curve which can indicate
formation fracturing. Borehole caving effects are
reduced using a depth derived compensation system.

P-wave and S-wave velocities (measured by an SS

Series Sidewall Sonic sonde or derived from
Christensen's Equation) are combined to compute
Poisson's Ratio. Shear, Bulk and Young's Moduli are
calculated with the addition of density data.

In CBL mode, Dt and peak amplitude come from the

cm waveform.

Gyroscopic Verticality Sonde - GYR Series

The Gyroscopic Verticality Sonde provides highly

accurate positional information in boreholes as small > Borehole navigation
as 76 mm (3.0 in) in diameter. It is designed to
operate in steel cased boreholes where conventional data inside steel casing
magnetometer-based verticality tools cannot function. > Six component
The tool operates on the principle that the spin axis orientation system
of a rotating gyroscope maintains a fixed position
with respect to the earth, regardless of the orientation
of the outer casing. By measuring the relative
positions of the casing and the spin axis, the tool ALL FIGURES IN LOG DEPTH MS PLOT WITH RESPECT TO TRUE NORTH

The SAI provides formation resistivity data in
wellbores containing non-conductive or low salinity for an enhanced high
drilling fluids. Its single transmitter and multiple resolution presentation
receiver design not only makes it very short, but
VIVID invasion
C

allows multiple independent measurements that make >

it possible to control the vertical and radial investi- profile imaging
gation characteristics to suit the logging environment.

The processing software computes up to six resistivity

curves, ranging from the shallow penetration
Apparent Rxo to the very deep Apparent Rt. In
C
VECTAR mode, the vertical resolution of each curve
is matched to that of the shortest coil array. An image
C
of the invasion profile is generated by the VIVID
processing option which delineates profile shapes,
and, in particular, those of annulus profiles (which
are indicative of moveable hydrocarbons).

The tool contains a transmitter coil that is driven with
an alternating current operating at 20 kHz. A single > Quadrature and In-

in the surrounding rocks by the transmitter. The
magnitude of the received signal is directly > Integral Gamma Ray
proportional to the conductivity of the rock.

A combination of very small diameter and ability to

Magnetic Susceptibility Sonde - SU Series

The Magnetic Susceptibility Tool is based on

electromagnetic induction principles. It comprises a > Detection of iron
transmitter coil and a balanced receiver coil set up
so that the direct coupling signal from the bearing and associated
transmitter is cancelled out when the tool is in a minerals
homogenous environment. The proximity of
magnetic materials produces mutual imbalances > Suitable for very slim
whose magnitudes depend in part on the boreholes
magnetic susceptibility of the earth formations.

The tool responds to signals in phase (R-signals) and

out of phase (X-signals) with the transmitter. It is the
X-signals that are more sensitive to the presence of
magnetic materials. Some variants record the X-
signal only.

SU Series tools are calibrated directly in cgs units, or

Ash Analysis - ASH

The Ash Analysis uses DD Series density data and a COAL

core derived ash/density relationship to produce a MINERAL MATTER

volumetric analysis of coal ash. 748

A high resolution log such as the Bed Resolution

Density is used to divide the seam into intervals of
consistent density - manual or automatic blocking 750

techniques are available. The blocking log is applied

to either long or short spaced densities, depending on
borehole conditions and the degree of detail required.
The final step is implementation of the ash/density
752

algorithm to the blocked density data to define the

coal and ash constituents by volume. A tabular
summary of percentage by weight of floats and sinks DEPTH

completes the analysis.

Coal Seam Evaluation - CSE

The Coal Seam Evaluation takes the Ash Analysis a COAL

stage further by incorporating sonic data to produce a MINERAL MATTER MOISTURE CONTENT

Moisture content in addition to Mineral Matter and 748

Coal Substance (the in-situ equivalents of the

Proximate Analysis volumes). End points for these
components are defined by reference to sonic/density
crossplots. If a laboratory derived ash/density 750

relationship is available then Ash percentage will

replace Mineral Matter in the analysis.

some conventional logs by between 50 and 300 %, giving

improved bed thickness, more confident quality evaluation,
precise core correlation and tighter pay zone estimates in thinly
bedded and complex formations.

The VECTAR technique extracts high resolution information
from multi-detector measurements and adds it back to standard
borehole compensated logs. It is available for Compensated
Density and Array Induction logs, where it is also used in the
C
generation of invasion profile images (VIVID ). In most cases,
data needs to be acquired at higher than normal sample rates.

Formation Image and Dipmeter Analysis

Formation image and dipmeter data are valuable sources of

geological information relating to structures (folds, faults,
unconformities and structural dips), to sedimentary geology
(facies, bedform orientations and palaeocurrent directions)
and to stress orientations
or breakouts.

Software solutions commence

with wellsite quality control
and quick look products, and
C
extend to Q-log and
C
PC ImagePro which provide
different levels of automated
and interactive analyses. The
detailed results and statistics
from these procedures form
the raw materials used by
specialist interpreters.

Acoustic Products - MPA - FHA - SDA

Fracture Height Analysis (FHA - right) predicts the

vertical extent and width of an induced fracture as a
function of applied pressure, the mechanical
properties of the rock and the depths and lengths of
associated perforated intervals.

It is based on classic poroelastic theory and a recent

model of fracture behaviour. It uses dynamic elastic
moduli from the Mechanical Properties Analysis
(MPA - also right) and the results of lithological
analysis.

Compressional and shear slowness data define the

formation dynamic Poisson's Ratio used in
formulating vertical and horizontal stress
relationships. Adding formation density allows the
remaining elastic moduli and fracture closure pressure
to be computed. The delta pressure required to
propagate a fracture follows from the addition of
lithology dependent fracture toughness information.

Synthetic seismograms generated from sonic and density log data

allow specific horizons to be correlated to reflectors observed on
seismic sections. They can help differentiate primary reflectors
from events caused by multiples.
