Last week, in my story about world renowned sailor Gary Jobson coming to speak at Catawba Island Club, I noted that he had worked with Jim Kelly (a.k.a. Jim Scroggs), who began his career here in Port Clinton at WRWR. First, Jim Kelly is now semi-retired and was meeting up with Jobson in San Diego this weekend. Kelly lives in Park City, Utah now. I also got a call last week from Frank Kekes, who was on the staff at WRWR back in the mid 1960s, along with Mike Kel-

Humane Society Clarifies Mission
As warmer weather nears, the Humane Society of Ottawa County is facing a most challenging start to the year. Kitten season, when many baby animals are brought to our shelter, is already taxing our small facility. This year, due to the generosity of our supporters, our shelter renovation and enlargement plan is scheduled for a spring groundbreaking. It will allow us to better serve the domestic animals of Ottawa County for years to come. The HSOC is excited to begin this new project. Each year, many well-meaning citizens bring boxfuls of baby kittens or litters of healthy baby puppies to our shelter. As often as not, an awkward situation results as shelter staff tries to find room for the adorable animals or tries to inform the person bringing them in that we are without room for them at this time. This can and has led to hard feelings. If the Humane Society cant take them, who can? is a common refrain. Pursuant to the Ohio Revised Code, we are tasked with caring for abused, neglected and abandoned animals in our county of jurisdiction. Due to this definition, and especially due to our lack of space, we are unable, at times, to take in healthy animals, strays or unwanted pets. We also are not responsible for dogs running at large. The Dog Warden does a fine job handling those types of calls. Finally, we simply cannot take in wild animals or feral cats. We have received requests from people to take action with feral cats on their properties. We regret that we are unable to help in these kinds of circumstances. First, the mission of a Humane Society is not to control stray or feral animals. Secondly, were we to try to capture and care for large numbers of strays, our small facility would quickly become overrun. We have a number of individuals and neighborhoods, who have banned together to trap, neuter and return feral cats, to control their population. In this area we can help by offering reduced spay and neuter programs. As a charitable organization that does not receive government funding, we rely on the generosity of the community to perform our mission. To that end, we try our best to make accommodations in any way we can. For example, when we are too full to accept new animals, we are happy to provide any available food, litter and supplies to the person bringing the animal to us, in the hopes that the person can foster the animal until space is available in our shelter. However, as the areas only true no-kill facility, we are unable to provide for all of the communities animal control needs. As we move toward warmer weather we look forward to our expansion and being able to offer a temporary home to more abused, neglected and abandoned animals than ever before, and adopting them to loving permanent members of furever homes. We ask the community to assist us by being cognizant of our services, as well as our limitations, while we pursue our mission. Chris Marcinko

Well, the political machine is up and running for the next five to six months promises are being made to change things. We have heard this many times. Change will happen. Manage the change is my rule of the thumb. If we could only do something about limiting campaign finances we could stop buying elections. Did you know that the Mayor of London, England can only spend $500 in campaigning? When are we going to wake up and put into office a middle class, working member of our country who is in it for the betterment of our community and country not for the power of the office. There is so much waste in government there seems to be no hope for recovery. Our current president made all those campaign promises and look what we have. I for one will remember this on election day. Play back those promises four years ago and see how many have come true. My hope for the new council and Mayor would be to bring jobs to Port Clinton. We had our chance with the waterfront development and blew it. There are developers that need to be contacted: For example: The Puller Group. Steve Benko and I met the Puller Group in Indiana and enticed them to look at Port Clinton. $200 million dollars could have been had if not for the people against them. Just think 1000 new jobs in the $15-20 range. Millions of dollars in tax revenues to fix up Port Clinton. Lets keep trying., We have brain drain here in Port Clinton. Our young people are leaving because there are no jobs. Get busy Council and send out proposals its not too late. Do the homework. Dont let a few naysayers stop progress in our great community. Sincerely, Dr. Thomas M. Brown Port Clinton

With what we have in the bank now and other pledges yet to be realized we have around $3,600 of our $8,000-10,000 annual goal, Snider said. Sick Day
Recently, I called in sick, made myself some soup and worked from home so as to not infect residents and team members. It got me to thinking: what do residents do when they call in sick? Its a pretty simple process. First, you call the receptionist. Then you get comfortable. You are on the community prayer list. Chef Ryan readies you a hearty, homemade lunch to be delivered to your kitchen table keep your strength up. Nurses are ready with a thermometer and encouraging words. We have an interest in keeping residents well. Come tour Otterbein North Shore to see all the means we have to keep you healthy and active. Sunday afternoon tours are available on February 5th and February 19th from 1-3pm.

Oak Harbor 52, Huron 23 The Rockets took control by outscoring Huron, 14-5, in the second quarter to grab a 24-13 halftime lead and broke the game open with a 19-2 advantage in the third quarter before winning, 52-23. It was a much-needed win for the Rockets, who had lost five consecutive games, all in the conference. Its last victory came against Woodmore (48-45) on Dec. 22.
Oak Harbor forward Allison Dunn led all scorers with 18 points and Abbie Gezo had 15 to help pace the Rockets. Hurons Hannah Cantrill led the team in scoring with nine points. With the win, Oak Harbor improves to 5-10 overall and 2-9 in the league. Its other conference victory also came against Huron, a 58-54 home win over the Tigers on Dec. 16. The Rockets travel to Clyde (15-1, 11-0 SBC) to face the Fliers on Thursday. Clyde, which advanced to the Division II State Semifinals last season, recently clinched a share of the SBC title and is playing great basketball. When the teams met earlier in the season, Clyde won in convincing fashion, 62-38. The following Tuesday, the Rockets face the Tiffin Columbian Tornadoes (5-10), who beat the Rockets last season in the sectional tournament.

Oak Harbor 58, Edison 43 The Rockets notched their second win of the season, defeating Edison, 58-43, be-
hind a strong third-quarter performance. With the win, the Rockets improve to 2-13 overall and 2-8 in the SBC, one game behind St. Mary CC for sixth place in the conference. The Chargers, who won the SBC last season, have five new starters and have struggled mightily, going 1-13 overall and 0-10 in the league. Oak Harbor led 10-9 after the first quarter and 19-16 at halftime before taking control in the third quarter. The Rockets outscored the Chargers, 23-11, in the third period to break the game open. Oak Harbor had three players finish in double figures, among them A.J. Cecil (13), Austin Wiegand (12) and Phil Bryant (11). In all, the Rockets had eight players score on the evening. Edisons Jason Blodgett led all scorers with 14 points and Shane Crooks and Dakota Church finished with eight and seven points, respectively. It was an especially important victory for Oak Harbor considering that their previous game was a heartbreaking defeat, a 42-41 loss to Port Clinton. On Friday, the Rockets travel to Huron to face the Tigers (9-5, 6-4 SBC) who are tied for third in the SBC with Port Clinton and Margaretta. When the two teams faced one another earlier in the season, Huron won, 45-32.

Danbury 32, Northwood 31 Danbury won arguably its biggest game of the season last week, defeating Toledo Area Athletic Conference (TAAC) foe Northwood in dramatic fashion, 32-31. With the win, the Lakers improved to 6-9 overall and 6-4 in the TAAC, good enough to move into a third-place tie with Northwood. The win avenged an earlier loss to Lady Rangers, who defeated the Lakers, 54-44, on Dec. 17. With a 25-20 lead going into the third quarter, Danbury had to hold off a Lady Ranger rally that got the deficit to one point late, but the Lakers were able to hold on for the win. Danbury, which has now won three consecutive games, was led by Kelsey Clemons, who scored a game-high 15 points, including two 3-pointers. Erin Lavelle helped pace the Lakers with seven points. Northwood (8-7, 6-4 TAAC) got 12 points from Becca Bisbee and 11 from Anna Raymond. The difference in the game came from Danburys superior perfromance at the charity stripe and three-point line. The Lakers outscored the Lady Rangers 10-5 at the free-throw line and 12-6 at the three-point line, despite

hitting on only 10 field goals, compared to Northwoods 12. It was a close game throughout as the lead switched hands a number of time during the course of action. The Lakers trailed 8-7 after one quarter before taking a 15-13 lead at the half and extending it to 25-20 going in the final period. On Thursday, the Lakers host Cardinal Stritch (5-9, 5-4 TAAC), who defeated Danbury, 51-33, on Jan. 3.

Ottawa Hills 56, Danbury 35 The Green Bears took a 13-5 lead after the first quarter before seeing it grow to 15 points as they outscored Danbury, 15-8, in the second quarter on its way to the 56-35 victory. Ottawa Hills (5-7, 3-4 TAAC) was led by Geoff Beans and A.J. King, who finished with 14 and 11 points, respectively. Laker guard Caleb Helline, who leads the TAAC with 18.2 points per game (ppg) average, finished with 13 points and Dalton Chapman scored six points. On Friday, the Lakers (0-12, 0-7 TAAC) host Gibsonburg (11-1, 6-0 TAAC), the top team in the conference, and, on the following Tuesday, host Northwood. The Golden Bears defeated Danbury, 85-39, in their earlier matchup, and the Rangers (2-11, 1-6 TAAC) beat the Lakers in dramatic fashion the first time they played, 47-45.
