Resort activity scores BIG at Travel Show

By John Schaffner While most of the attention locally was on the Annual Cleveland Boat Show, the Lake Erie Shores & Islands partnership scored big points for our area during the same time period at the AAA Columbus Travel Show. Wow was the way local Tourism Director Larry Fletcher put it. We had many enticing visuals to attract peoples attention, including a 20-foot by 40-foot backdrop, said Fletcher. We also had a lot of activities for kids and a wine tasting bar for adults. We had Cedar Points animatronics dinosaur, a Jack Sparrow look-alike, Snoopy, and a green screen that allowed people to have their image superimposed over a photo that made it look like they were holding up a big walleye. They also featured a mini-beach and the sand was like a magnet the kids and adults were in that sand almost every hour of each day of the show, he said. Because of the large presence, the Lake Erie Shores & Islands, which is comprised of the Sandusky/Erie County Visitors & Convention Bureau and Ottawa County Visitors Bureau, was also acknowledged as one of the major sponsors of the show, receiving a large amount of additional promotion both before and during the event, according to Fletcher. I doubt that very many visitors to the show missed stopping by our booth area. While the Cleveland Boat Show has shrunk significantly because of the economic effects of the recession to boat and condominium sales, the travel industry continues to thrive, as demonstrated by a large attendance in Columbus. Fletcher said most of the questions asked by attendees centered on three categories. First, questions came from folks who already have a place at the lake but discovered they didnt know as much about the area as they thought. The second was people who have always wanted to visit our area but havent. From the reaction we saw, I think a lot of them will be planning a trip very soon, said Fletcher. The third group was the folks who came up to the lake as a kid or made that trip to Cedar Point a while back but hadnt been here in a while. They too will probably be visiting sooner than later. I asked Larry how he would compare the enthusiasm of this show with others they participate in. AAA and the company they hire to produce this show make it very fun for the visitors, he said. This is the show that is the most fun for me to work by far over any other show. There is a wide variety of exhibitors, but all travel and tourism related. Fletcher also pointed to the power of partnership in marketing the North Coast of Ohio. We had 13 businesses, many of which compete head to head for visitor dollars, coming together to create an impact on that show floor that none of them could have made individually, said Fletcher. This resulted in the vast majority of show visitors into our booth area See RESORT 2A

Magruder Hospitals Charity Ball a 1929 Party

The Magruder Hospital Auxiliarys 58th Annual Charity Ball this year will take patrons to a time of the past. A time when speakeasies were easy to find, gambling was a hobby and a decade became famously known by the description roaring. On Saturday, Feb. 25 the charity ball committee will transform the Catawba Island Club into a speakeasy kind of place where patrons can party like its 1929. Our entire committee thought this would be a really great theme for the charity ball this year. It was a fascinating time in history and it has given us great inspiration for a fun evening, said Nick Marsico, who along with his wife, Jen, is the chair of this years event. Nick is the director of pharmacy at Magruder and volunteered his time this year to make the auxiliary fund-raiser a success. I have a personal drive to be part of this event because the funds are going toward a project that I am currently in charge of at the hospital, he said. The money will go toward the purchase of our new Smart IV pumps that give our patients optimal care and safety. The functionality of these pumps will give us medication management capabilities that are only available in a handful of hospitals nationwide. The event is open to anyone purchasing a ticket and will begin

Terra announces next president

Terra State Community Colleges governing body has unanimously selected current Vice President for Student and Administrative Affairs, Dr. Jerome Webster, as the sixth president of the College, according to newly elected Terra Board of Trustee Chair Carl E. Koebel. As a Board, we have observed Dr. Webster demonstrate his leadership capabilities and knowledge of higher education issues that face community colleges today, Koebel said, citing Websters experience and innovative ideas. His focus of keeping the college as a student centered institution has been key in revamping student affairs and enrollment services. His business knowledge has been integral in restructuring the human resources function of WEBSTER the College. And, his vigilance in strengthening the relationships with our collective bargaining units has been very important to the board. But more importantly, his visionary acumen and the critical role he has played in structuring the Colleges Planning and Institutional Effectiveness Council and the Vision 2016 Strategic Plan was crucial to our decision in selecting him for the presidents position. Dr. Webster a resident of Fremont, will succeed Dr. Marsha S. Bordner, who has announced her upcoming retirement. He will begin serving a three-year contract effective July 1. Webster received his bachelors degree in business administration with a concentration in human resources from Olivet College in Michigan. His career has included a position at the University of Toledo, where he spent 10 years working in various positions in university housing. After completing his masters degree in educational technology and human resources development, Dr. Webster entered the doctoral program in higher education administration at the University of Toledo. He was awarded a fellowship with the distinguished Community College Presidential Fellowship Program, offered jointly by the University of Toledo and five area community colleges in northwest Ohio and southeastern Michigan. The fellowship led him to his next position as Dean of Student Services at Terra State Community College. He served as Dean of Students at Lawrence Technological University in Southfield, Mich., as well as as Dean of Student Affairs with Cuyahoga Community College in Cleveland. In August 2008, he accepted the position of Vice President for Student and Administrative Affairs at Terra, where he has continued to be active in various state and regional organizations in higher education. I am humbled and truly honored to be given this opportunity to serve the Board of Trustees, the college, our students, and the community in this new role, said Dr. Webster. I have big shoes to fill following Dr. Bordners leadership, but I cant begin to tell you all how excited I am.

Sound Off
Humane Society Clarifies Mission
As warmer weather nears, the Humane Society of Ottawa County is facing a most challenging start to the year. Kitten season, when many baby animals are brought to our shelter, is already taxing our small facility. This year, due to the generosity of our supporters, our shelter renovation and enlargement plan is scheduled for a spring groundbreaking. It will allow us to better serve the domestic animals of Ottawa County for years to come. The HSOC is excited to begin this new project. Each year, many well-meaning citizens bring boxfuls of baby kittens or litters of healthy baby puppies to our shelter. As often as not, an awkward situation results as shelter staff tries to find room for the adorable animals or tries to inform the person bringing them in that we are without room for them at this time. This can and has led to hard feelings. If the Humane Society cant take them, who can? is a common refrain. Pursuant to the Ohio Revised Code, we are tasked with caring for abused, neglected and abandoned animals in our county of jurisdiction. Due to this definition, and especially due to our lack of space, we are unable, at times, to take in healthy animals, strays or unwanted pets. We also are not responsible for dogs running at large. The Dog Warden does a fine job handling those types of calls. Finally, we simply cannot take in wild animals or feral cats. We have received requests from people to take action with feral cats on their properties. We regret that we are unable to help in these kinds of circumstances. First, the mission of a Humane Society is not to control stray or feral animals. Secondly, were we to try to capture and care for large numbers of strays, our small facility would quickly become overrun. We have a number of individuals and neighborhoods, who have banned together to trap, neuter and return feral cats, to control their population. In this area we can help by offering reduced spay and neuter programs. As a charitable organization that does not receive government funding, we rely on the generosity of the community to perform our mission. To that end, we try our best to make accommodations in any way we can. For example, when we are too full to accept new animals, we are happy to provide any available food, litter and supplies to the person bringing the animal to us, in the hopes that the person can foster the animal until space is available in our shelter. However, as the areas only true no-kill facility, we are unable to provide for all of the communities animal control needs. As we move toward warmer weather we look forward to our expansion and being able to offer a temporary home to more abused, neglected and abandoned animals than ever before, and adopting them to loving permanent members of furever homes. We ask the community to assist us by being cognizant of our services, as well as our limitations, while we pursue our mission. Chris Marcinko

Well, the political machine is up and running for the next five to six months promises are being made to change things. We have heard this many times. Change will happen. Manage the change is my rule of the thumb. If we could only do something about limiting campaign finances we could stop buying elections. Did you know that the Mayor of London, England can only spend $500 in campaigning? When are we going to wake up and put into office a middle class, working member of our country who is in it for the betterment of our community and country not for the power of the office. There is so much waste in government there seems to be no hope for recovery. Our current president made all those campaign promises and look what we have. I for one will remember this on election day. Play back those promises four years ago and see how many have come true. My hope for the new council and Mayor would be to bring jobs to Port Clinton. We had our chance with the waterfront development and blew it. There are developers that need to be contacted: For example: The Puller Group. Steve Benko and I met the Puller Group in Indiana and enticed them to look at Port Clinton. $200 million dollars could have been had if not for the people against them. Just think 1000 new jobs in the $15-20 range. Millions of dollars in tax revenues to fix up Port Clinton. Lets keep trying., We have brain drain here in Port Clinton. Our young people are leaving because there are no jobs. Get busy Council and send out proposals its not too late. Do the homework. Dont let a few naysayers stop progress in our great community. Sincerely, Dr. Thomas M. Brown Port Clinton

Texas Holdem Tournament Results

Nearly 60 people gathered at the Port Clinton Elks Lodge on Sunday, Jan. 29 for the 5th Annual No Limit Texas Holdem Poker Tournament. The tournament helps fund Port Clintons annual Fourth of July Celebration. Tournament Co-Organizer Debbie Tester was pleased with the turnout. Its not the biggest crowd weve ever had and its far from the smallest Im guessing well have put a pretty good dent in what we need to have a Fourth of July celebration in Port Clinton. Players from all Port Clinton and Ottawa County were joined by individuals from Fremont, Clyde, Huron and Bellevue. Nick Biers of Port Clinton brought a friend from work. This is Jims (Anders) first time but Ive been here nearly every year. I like to play poker and my family and I like to watch fireworks. Its a winwin. Biers, who celebrated his 27th birthday at the tournament, almost won it all. However, at the end the cards didnt go his way and Biers walked away with third place. Biers outcome in the tournament was slightly better than Corey Hickman who earned the title of Bubble Boy by finishing in 10th place one spot outside of the final table and his shot at taking home prize money. However, its not all bad news for Hickman as he will receive free entry in next years poker tournament and certainly a new nickname from his friends for at least a year. Rick Tiech finished in second, and Dave Gates of Oak Harbor took home first prize. Its lots of fun, it goes for a great cause and my buddies at the Legion in Oak Harbor wont believe it, Gates said of his win. 50/50 raffles, complimentary munchies, a hot dog sales and a cash bar were avail-

Lou Wargo served as the guest dealer for the final table and co-organizer Dennis Tester ran the event as pit boss. Others that assisted in various capacities for the event were Jim Snip and Sharon Snider; Mike & Mary Ann Snider; Gale Reynolds; Don Gaydosh; Bruce Szilagyi; and the staff of the Elks Lodge. Fourth of July Committee Chairman Mike Snider was pleased with the outcome. Although not all expenses have been known I think well put approximately $1,000 toward the Port Clinton Area Fourth of July Celebration. With what we have in the bank now and other pledges yet to be realized we have around $3,600 of our $8,000-10,000 annual goal, Snider said. Donations may also be sent to the Port Clinton Chamber of Commerce Foundation, 110 Madison St., Port Clinton, 43452. Donors should add the special notation FIREWORKS to any checks to ensure funds are sent to the proper account.

Sick Day
Recently, I called in sick, made myself some soup and worked from home so as to not infect residents and team members. It got me to thinking: what do residents do when they call in sick? Its a pretty simple process. First, you call the receptionist. Then you get comfortable. You are on the community prayer list. Chef Ryan readies you a hearty, homemade lunch to be delivered to your kitchen table keep your strength up. Nurses are ready with a thermometer and encouraging words. We have an interest in keeping residents well. Come tour Otterbein North Shore to see all the means we have to keep you healthy and active. Sunday afternoon tours are available on February 5th and February 19th from 1-3pm.

Brunos Pizzeria, great pizza in Marblehead year round

Do you like Pizza? (and who doesnt?) Then Brunos Pizzeria is the place to be. They opened in January of 2008 at 726 W. Main St. in Marblehead. Despite being located in the heart of a highly seasonal area, Brunos has committed to staying open all year long. They feature great pizza, of course, along with pasta and Italian eatery fare. They also have wings, subs, salads, along with beer and wine specials. A good, warm lunch in the form of a Pizza, Pasta and Soup Buffet is offered every day from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dine-in, carry out or meal deliveries are available. Owner Brian Strayer has brought in a new management staff that he said is working out very well. Mike Hagnett is the general manager and Gary Wechter is the manager. They also recently installed several new ovens to help make the kitchen faster and even more efficient. In addition, they are looking to grow their team at Brunos. They are now actively looking for dynamic personalities to join the crew for the spring and summer season. And lest we forget Brunos Loves Locals!!! Thats why they feature daily specials just for locals. Brunos has also become active in the Marblehead Peninsula Chamber of Commerce. They have held two Business After Hours events there in the past two years. All of the attendees have walked out raving about the quality of the food, especially the pizza, as well as the friendly service. Join Brunos for Wine Tasting presented by Heidelberg Distributing on February 2nd and 25th from 6-8 p.m. For $10.00 a person you get wine tasting, fruit, cheese & crackers and a pizza buffet. Brunos are open daily in the winter Sunday - Thursday 11 a.m. - 8 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. - 9 p.m.

Redskins play final home game Friday

BY JOHN SCHAFFNER The Port Clinton Redskins made it another sweep of their rivals from Oak Harbor last Thursday with a 4241 squeaker victory. It was a special Shoot Out Cancer game with the players on both teams, along with their cheerleaders, wearing orange T-shirts to show support. The Redskins build a nice lead in the third quarter and were up by eight going into the final stanza, 33-25. We built a nice lead in the third quarter, said Port Clinton Coach Troy Diels on Monday. We had a hard time holding the lead after we turned it over too many times. We made just enough plays down the stretch and Jason Mueller hit two key free throws with six seconds left to win it for us. I was proud of my guys for hanging in there. rebounds in the first half and we were never able to recover. We came out in the second half and battled and cut the deficit to single digits a couple of times but Margaretta answered with some big threes. Despite this being early February, the Redskins will say farewell to The Supreme Court after Friday nights game against Sandusky St. Marys. They will finish the regular season on the road with their final four games against very tough competition. So what about St. Marys? They are playing better, said Coach Diels. When we played them the first time it was one of the few games all year that we were at full strength. We will need to control Alex Opfer who is leading the league in scoring. It will also be the final appearance of PCs seniors, with the exception of Aaron Mier who had knee surgery last week. Also questionable is Jason Faust with an Achilles injury. We will have Chase Minnear, Steve Wingo, Brandon Stubblefield, Kelly Friemark Port Clinton senior Alex Stephenson puts up the 3-pointer and Alex Greene healthy and ready to go for their that made her the most prolific triple shooter in Port Clinton girls basketball history. senior night. Despite an overall record of 6-9, the Redskins are 6-4 in Sandusky Bay Conference play, tied with Margaretta and Huron behind Perkins (10-0) and Clyde (7-3). Their final four games will be against Perkins, Huron, Fostoria and Clyde all on the road.

Lady Redskins are 11-5

Port Clinton girls basketball coach Toby Bickel is getting closer to that haircut! He told his team that he wasnt going to get his hair cut until they won 13 games this season. Well, following Friday nights win over Sandusky St. Marys, they managed to up their overall record to 11-5 and 7-4 in the Sandusky Bay Conference. Super sophomores Hope Thorbahn and Tiffany Colston led the Lady Redskins combining for 37 points in the win. Oak Harbor boys, girls notch victories

BY YANEEK SMITH

GIRLS
Oak Harbor 52, Huron 23 The Rockets took control by outscoring Huron, 14-5, in the second quarter to grab a 24-13 halftime lead and broke the game open with a 19-2 advantage in the third quarter before winning, 52-23. It was a much-needed win for the Rockets, who had lost five consecutive games, all in the conference. Its last victory came against Woodmore (48-45) on Dec. 22.

Oak Harbor forward Allison Dunn led all scorers with 18 points and Abbie Gezo had 15 to help pace the Rockets. Hurons Hannah Cantrill led the team in scoring with nine points. With the win, Oak Harbor improves to 5-10 overall and 2-9 in the league. Its other conference victory also came against Huron, a 58-54 home win over the Tigers on Dec. 16. The Rockets travel to Clyde (15-1, 11-0 SBC) to face the Fliers on Thursday. Clyde, which advanced to the Division II State Semifinals last season, recently clinched a share of the SBC title and is playing great basketball. When the teams met earlier in the season, Clyde won in convincing fashion, 62-38. The following Tuesday, the Rockets face the Tiffin Columbian Tornadoes (5-10), who beat the Rockets last season in the sectional tournament.

Oak Harbor 58, Edison 43 The Rockets notched their second win of the season, defeating Edison, 58-43, be-

hind a strong third-quarter performance. With the win, the Rockets improve to 2-13 overall and 2-8 in the SBC, one game behind St. Mary CC for sixth place in the conference. The Chargers, who won the SBC last season, have five new starters and have struggled mightily, going 1-13 overall and 0-10 in the league. Oak Harbor led 10-9 after the first quarter and 19-16 at halftime before taking control in the third quarter. The Rockets outscored the Chargers, 23-11, in the third period to break the game open. Oak Harbor had three players finish in double figures, among them A.J. Cecil (13), Austin Wiegand (12) and Phil Bryant (11). In all, the Rockets had eight players score on the evening. Edisons Jason Blodgett led all scorers with 14 points and Shane Crooks and Dakota Church finished with eight and seven points, respectively. It was an especially important victory for Oak Harbor considering that their previous game was a heartbreaking defeat, a 42-41 loss to Port Clinton. On Friday, the Rockets travel to Huron to face the Tigers (9-5, 6-4 SBC) who are tied for third in the SBC with Port Clinton and Margaretta. When the two teams faced one another earlier in the season, Huron won, 45-32.

Laker girls win third consecutive game

(Across from the airport, east side of the old Portage School)

GIRLS
Danbury 32, Northwood 31 Danbury won arguably its biggest game of the season last week, defeating Toledo Area Athletic Conference (TAAC) foe Northwood in dramatic fashion, 32-31. With the win, the Lakers improved to 6-9 overall and 6-4 in the TAAC, good enough to move into a third-place tie with Northwood. The win avenged an earlier loss to Lady Rangers, who defeated the Lakers, 54-44, on Dec. 17. With a 25-20 lead going into the third quarter, Danbury had to hold off a Lady Ranger rally that got the deficit to one point late, but the Lakers were able to hold on for the win. Danbury, which has now won three consecutive games, was led by Kelsey Clemons, who scored a game-high 15 points, including two 3-pointers. Erin Lavelle helped pace the Lakers with seven points. Northwood (8-7, 6-4 TAAC) got 12 points from Becca Bisbee and 11 from Anna Raymond. The difference in the game came from Danburys superior perfromance at the charity stripe and three-point line. The Lakers outscored the Lady Rangers 10-5 at the free-throw line and 12-6 at the three-point line, despite

hitting on only 10 field goals, compared to Northwoods 12. It was a close game throughout as the lead switched hands a number of time during the course of action. The Lakers trailed 8-7 after one quarter before taking a 15-13 lead at the half and extending it to 25-20 going in the final period. On Thursday, the Lakers host Cardinal Stritch (5-9, 5-4 TAAC), who defeated Danbury, 51-33, on Jan. 3.

Ottawa Hills (5-7, 3-4 TAAC) was led by Geoff Beans and A.J. King, who finished with 14 and 11 points, respectively. Laker guard Caleb Helline, who leads the TAAC with 18.2 points per game (ppg) average, finished with 13 points and Dalton Chapman scored six points. On Friday, the Lakers (0-12, 0-7 TAAC) host Gibsonburg (11-1, 6-0 TAAC), the top team in the conference, and, on the following Tuesday, host Northwood. The Golden Bears defeated Danbury, 85-39, in their earlier matchup, and the Rangers (2-11, 1-6 TAAC) beat the Lakers in dramatic fashion the first time they played, 47-45.
