SPECIAL SUPPLEMENT
LIEUTENANT GOVERNORS WINTER FESTIVAL
WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 1, 2012 2
On behalf of the City of
Brandon, it is my pleasure to
extend a warm welcome to
everyone attending the ninth
annual Lieutenant Gover-
nors Winter Festival. It is a
rich and vibrant celebration
of Brandons cultural diver-
sity.
On Feb. 2, 3 and 4, Bran-
don will be transformed into
one of the biggest stages on
the Prairies, drawing per-
formers and visitors from far
and wide. Last year, there
were more than 60,000
pavilion visits, and the Win-
ter Festival continues to
grow!
The festival remains
squarely a grassroots
event, driven by the enthusi-
astic support it receives from
Brandons multicultural com-
munities. The Winter Festival
is the result of countless
hours of hard work and the
commitment of more than
600 volunteers. I would like
to extend my thanks to those
volunteers, city staff, individ-
uals and groups that have
worked so hard to bring us
13 outstanding pavilions. A
very special thank you to the
El Salvador pavilion, which
is this years host pavilion.
My sincere thanks is ex-
tended to all these people
and to the festival sponsors
who support the Lieutenant
Governors Winter Festival in
staging this marvellous cele-
bration of inclusiveness,
unity, harmony and goodwill.

As the Queens representative
in Manitoba, and honorary patron,
I am pleased to welcome everyone
to the ninth annual Lieutenant
Governors Winter Festival.
Winters in Manitoba can be
both challenging and rewarding.
While we cant control the temper-
ature or weather conditions, it is
good to know there are plenty of
opportunities to enjoy and em-
brace the season. Brandons Win-
ter Festival celebrates winter with
outdoor activities and displays
and also welcomes visitors to
many indoor multicultural pavil-
ions featuring ethnic foods, music
and entertainment. It is certainly
a wonderful way to make the most
of a Manitoba winter weekend.
I commend the organizers,
sponsors and volunteers of Lieu-
tenant Governors Winter Festival
and extend warmest wishes for
another successful event.

Festival celebrates
our many cultures
BY MATT GOERZEN
Brandons most anticipated cultural
event, the Lieutenant Governors Winter
Festival, is back for 2012 with some
colourful new pavilions and the return
of many old festival friends.
The ninth rendition of the festival
kicks off at city hall on Thursday, Feb. 2,
where, for the first time, the El Salvador
pavilion will provide the food and enter-
tainment for the opening ceremonies,
hosted by Manitoba Lt.-Gov. Philip S.
Lee at 6 p.m.
This is truly a premier event, Win-
ter Festival chair Esther Bryan said. I
think its one of those events that you
wait for, a whole weekend of entertain-
ment and food. In the middle of winter,
we can do something fun.
Thirteen pavilions will champion
Brandons growing cultural diversity in a
three-day display of food, dance and cel-
ebration.
As is usually the case from year to
year, there have been some changes to
the pavilion lineup. Some new pavilions
are joining the festival this season, oth-
ers are on hiatus for a year or two, and
an old favourite is back.

For the first time, American culture will be rep-
resented with the United States pavilion, featuring
the folk traditions of the Red River and Mississippi
corridor. Representatives for the Isle of Mauritius,
a group featured in the Global Village pavilion last
year, have decided to go big in 2012 with their own
full pavilion.
Though the Global Village, Ethiopian and Philip-
pine pavilions will not be in operation this year, the
Brazilian, Colombian, Salvadoran, English, First
Nations, French Canadian, Irish, Mtis, Scottish
and Ukrainian pavilions will all be in full swing.
And after a two-year hiatus, the always popular
German pavilion is back in spectacular fashion,
with new digs at the Victoria Inn.
Last year, the Winter Festivals 13 pavilions drew
59,503 visits over its three-day duration. Admission
to all pavilions remains free, though its a good idea
to bring cash so you can sample the many food and
beverage options each culture has to offer.
As this years Winter Festival host, El Salvador
committee members have been working for months
on some special performances to wow the audi-
ence.

Theyre promising us a really great
show of traditional Salvadoran music
and dance, festival financial officer
Hope Roberts said. Theyre not giving
us too much information though its
going to be a bit of a surprise for every-
body.
Manitoba Culture, Heritage and
Tourism Minister Flor Marcelino will
also be on hand at the opening cere-
monies.
Ordinarily, the Winter Festival com-
mittee would have commissioned a
snow carving for the host pavilion, and
set up somewhere in a public location.
But while Old Man Winter has decided
to show his face with colder tempera-
tures, he didnt bring along enough
snow in time to allow festival organiz-
ers to build a snow pack.
There isnt enough days left to be
able to do that, Bryan said. This is the
first time ever in the nine years that
weve hosted this event, that there will
be no snow sculpture.

LIEUTENANT GOVERNORS WINTER FESTIVAL
WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 1, 2012 10
Since it began nine years ago, the
Lieutenant Governors Winter Festival
has drawn hundreds of thousands of
people through its varied and evolving
venues.
And while its the cultural music and
food that keeps us coming back year
after year, none of it could be done
without the many volunteers who spend
their time making it happen.
Its massive. Its absolutely mas-
sive, Winter Festival chair Esther
Bryan said. Thats part of the reason
the fest is so great, because we get
those volunteers.
The 2012 Lieutenant Governors
Winter Festival is set this year for
Feb. 2-4 and features 13 cultural
pavilions at locations spread through-
out Brandon.
While each pavilion has a core group
of volunteers that have been hard at
work for months in preparation of the
three-day event, as many hands as pos-
sible will be needed to ensure everyone
gets the most out of their festival expe-
rience.
Each pavilion co-ordinates and
schedules their own volunteers. They
start months in advance, and it just
builds as we get closer to the event it-
self. Its a big commitment from our cit-
izens.
Last year, for example, nearly 800
volunteers contributed at least 20
hours to help make the festival suc-
cessful.
All volunteers must either be over
the age of 18 or have parental consent.
For anyone who still wishes to lend a
hand at the pavilions by providing gen-
eral assistance, visit brandonwinterfes-
tival.ca for more details or call
729-2145.

LIEUTENANT GOVERNORS WINTER FESTIVAL
WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 1, 2012 11
BY MATT GOERZEN
Three new and returning pavilions join
the lineup for this years 2012 Lieutenant
Governors Winter Festival, and theyre
sure to please music, food and cultural
enthusiasts alike.
At first glance festivalgoers may won-
der why the United States has joined the
festival this year its a lot like Canada
right?
Wrong, says USA pavilion organizer
Shandra MacNeill, who notes that a lot of
the culture that we recognize as Ameri-
can comes from significant folk tradi-
tions.
This year, MacNeill says the festival
will focus on the Red River and Missis-
sippi corridor, which has a rich variety
of music and folk traditions and food.
Volunteers at the pavilion will be
dressed in period costumes from the late
1700s to the early 1800s, with a focus
on the area between Memphis, Tenn. and
Louisiana.
But the soul of the pavilion will be in
the barbecue sauces that will flavour the
pavilions tender pork ribs.
Weve taken three barbecue sauces
from three different regions Kansas
City, Memphis and South Carolina, Mac-
Neill said. People will be able to tie into
the culture of our pavilion right from the
sauce.
The Magnificent 7s, a Winnipeg band
that combines traditional bluegrass
with a sense of modern mayhem ac-
cording to the bands website, will head-
line the entertainment at the USA
pavilion.
Brandons Mauritian community has
stepped up its game this year after a
great showing at the Global Village pavil-

WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 1, 2012 12
Continued from Page 11
Featuring music from two
live bands, colourful dancing
performances and some
spicy treats from the Isle of
Mauritius, organizers say
theyre ready to do it on
their own this year.
Last year was a real suc-
cess, pavilion organizer
Gino Jaune said. We felt we
could do our own this year.
Thats going to be really
nice. We plan on bringing
the sun to Brandon with
some tropical music.
Like the U.S. pavilion, the
Mauritians have decided to
serve up some delicious
ribs. But Mauritian culture
is a mix of Indian, European
and Asian influences, so
count on a spicy edge when
you take a bite.
For the opening night, the
Isle of Mauritius pavilion
will focus on food and infor-
mation. The pavilions enter-
tainment, including music
and dancing, will begin on
Friday night and continue
into Saturday.
Over the last two years,
the citys German commu-
nity has been attempting to
find a venue large enough to
handle the many thousands
of visitors who want some
great German food, lively
music and authentic Ger-
man beer.
This year, finally, the Ger-
mans are back in a new
home at the Victoria Inns
Salon A and B.
Were happy to be back
and participate in the festi-
val, German pavilion organ-
izer Manfred Wicht said.
We will offer like in the
past good food and beer,
good schnapps and good
entertainment.

With the new location,
however, comes a small
problem, and thats park-
ing. The German Pavilion
shares a venue with a
working hotel and the
ever-popular Scottish
pavilion which is located
in the Victoria Inns Impe-
rial Ball Room.
To minimize confusion,
Wicht says German pavil-
ion organizers have made
a deal with the Sobeys
food store and Leons fur-
niture store across the
street.
Visitors can park
across the street. Parking
will be somewhat re-
stricted at the hotel and
we dont want to encroach
on hotel guests. Its very
important that patrons
coming to our pavilion ei-
ther take a shuttle bus or
park across the street.
Aside from the parking
issue, the new venue gives
organizers exactly what
they were looking for a
lot more space.
Now we will have seat-
ing capacity of 450, which
is phenomenal. In 2009,
about 5,600 people came
through the pavilion dur-
ing the three days. Im
thinking this year, with
125-130 more capacity,
well break all records in
our pavilion.
And dont miss a chance
to see the Man versus
Meter Wurst Competition
on Saturday afternoon.
The organizers have chal-
lenged members of the
public to eat a metre-long
wurst sausage with all the
sides, including red cab-
bage and sauerkraut, in
under an hour. The fastest
time gets a prize of $100.
The entry fee needed to
be paid at least one week
prior to the competition
date. The competition will
start at 2:15 p.m. on Feb.
4 at the German pavilion.

Each year the Lieutenant
Governors Winter Festival
committee selects a group
within Brandon to be the re-
cipients of non-perishable
food donations.
This year, organizers say
the Brandon University Stu-
dents Union has been cho-
sen, following a fire last fall
that burned part of the Bran-
don Universitys student
union building and destroyed
most of the food the organi-
zation had collected for
needy students.
I think the fire definitely
lent itself to drawing atten-
tion to the food bank at
BUSU, Winter Festival finan-
cial officer Hope Roberts
said. They could use some
extra support this year with
extended semesters, and
more students being around
and needing access to that
food bank over the last cou-
ple of months.
Collection bins for non-
perishable food items will be
placed at all 13 pavilions.
Donations will be collected
throughout the weekend.
Also, dont forget to fill out
the Winter Festivals quiz.
There are 13 questions on
the quiz one for each
pavilion. Answers can be
found by visiting the pavilion.
It will either be in the
display or found by talking to
a volunteer, that youll find
the answers there, Roberts
said.
Leave your quiz forms in
one of the buckets at any
pavilion for a chance to win
one of many prizes.
Its also a chance to give
us some feedback. Theres a
nice little spot on the back
where people can let us
know if they think theres
something we should con-
sider for future years, or if
they just love the festival and
want to keep coming back.

USA PAVILION
St. Matthews Church

(Wheelchair accessible)
Welcome to the United States of America Pavilion!
The USA has produced a wealth of unique cultural and folk
traditions. Along the Mississippi and Red River corridor runs
a rich, vivid tradition dissimilar to anywhere else in North
America. This region has produced much of what today is
identified as American folk tradition, for example: bluegrass,
blues, gospel, and country music; American foods like
BBQ, gumbo, and Southern cooking in general; and also
things like step dancing and campfire tales.
We intend to take Winter Festival goers back to the origins
of American culture in order to see how it has evolved, and
because who can resist tender pork ribs and rich apple pie
while listening to foot stomping bluegrass! Were offering
three traditional bbq sauces for our slow cooked ribs. Come
vote for your favorite! We have lined up some terrific high
energy musicians to entertain the crowds; will have samples
of traditional American cuisine and a display that features
some early Americana and historical references.
The USA Pavilion will be fully licensed, featuring a variety
of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. The USA Pavilion
is a great place to celebrate and reconnect with friends who
wish to explore American folk and roots traditions!
