Business Lunch Guest Speaker Christopher N. Smith Attorney at Law & Honorary Consul of the Kingdom of Denmark

A seventh generation Georgian, Christopher Smith was born in Macon, Georgia in 1964. After graduating from Warner Robins High School, he attended the University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia. He received his Bachelors of Business Administration Degree in 1988. Mr. Smith received his Juris Doctor Degree from the Walter F. George School of Law at Mercer University in 1991 and was admitted into the practice of law that year. Mr. Smith has practiced law in Georgia since 1991. He is admitted to practice before the Court of Appeals and the Supreme Court of the State of Georgia, as well as the Supreme Court of the United States. Mr. Smith maintains a practice with an emphasis on business, products liability, wrongful death, personal injury and international law. He regularly advises and represents European companies on issues relating to entry into the U.S. market. Said issues include formation and registration of a company, products liability law, insurance requirements and contract issues. He represents clients throughout the State of Georgia. Mr. Smith is an alumnus of the Aspen Institutes Future Leaders Forum. He is the founder of the Annual Georgia European Union Summit. He has been a guest lecturer for the University of Georgia, Wesleyan College, Macon State College, Georgia College and State University and Mercer Law School. He also was a featured speaker at the Danish American Business Forum in Copenhagen, Arhus and Odense, Denmark in 2003, 2004, 2006, 2008 and 2010. He serves on the Board of Directors of the Danish American Chamber of Commerce, the advisory Board of the World Chamber of Commerce and previously served on the Boards of several other entities. The Telegraph dubbed him Georgias Ambassador; similarly, in a feature article, Address Macon Magazine referred to Mr. Smith as a rising star on the international stage. In March, 2006, Her Majesty Queen Margrethe, II appointed him Honorary Consul of the Kingdom of Denmark. His appointment was the first of its kind in the history of Macon. In November 2006, he received the AGEUS Outstanding Foreign Relations Award. In September, 2007, he was awarded The Governors International Award for Individual Contribution to the State of Georgia. In 2008, he received the Danish 3

American Community Leader of the Year Award (the first American to do so). He has been a frequent guest on numerous television and radio programs. In 2011, he was one of three Honorary Consuls in the world to be quoted in the book Consular Affairs and Diplomacy. A frequent lecturer, he is regularly quoted by the media and makes guest television appearances on a variety of programs. He and his family reside in Macon, Georgia.

J-1 Students for Beginners Salon B Presenter: Mark Leech, Georgia State University This session is designed to help new advisors get the basics on J-1 student regulations including eligibility, DS-2019s maintenance of status, extension & employment. The Value of Study Abroad: Working with Career Services - Salon C Presenters: Maggie Miller, Georgia State University and Alice Ballenger, University of Georgia With high unemployment, students want to know that study abroad will help lead to securing a job. This session will discuss research showing that it helps students develop integral skills. A Qualitative Study: Transitioning from ESL to a University - Results & Recommendations Salon A Presenter: Anna Potter, Georgia Institute of Technology Language Institute Students from the Georgia Tech Language Institute who are now studying at US universities have been surveyed about the transition period from ESL to the university setting. Learn the results of this qualitative study and hear recommendations to help students adjust to university life.

The Big Picture: Advising Beyond F and J Status Salon B Presenters: Angela Guinyard, Emory University and Terra Martin, Ogletree, Deakins, Nask, Smoke and Stewart This session will discuss preparing students and scholars for their immigration futures and how to get them to start early in planning a successful path towards a career in the U.S.- successful use of CPT/OPT/working with employers to secure the H-1B and building a research portfolio. Study Abroad Round Table Salon C Presenters: Alice Ballenger, University of Georgia and Sarah Egerer, Berry College What are institutions throughout the state of Georgia doing in Education Abroad? This session will facilitate conversations among Education Abroad professionals in a round table discussion format on topics such as diversity abroad, faculty-led programs, evaluations, curriculum integration, and reentry programming. F-1 Basics Salon A Presenters: Kati Parker, Georgia State Univ. and Tanya Grubbs, Georgia Southern Univ. This introductory workshop provides participants with an opportunity to learn how to process the most common requests made by new Designated School Officials (DSO). Participants will review their major responsibilities as an F-1 Advisor and develop skills to interpret, process and research common requests F-1 students have during their course of study. The workshop will focus on addressing common requests such as: issuing I-20s, maintaining status, travel and reentry, employment, change of status and transfers. This session is designed for advisors who have an understanding of F-1 advising with two or more years experience broaden their advising toolbox. Presenters will share best practices and cases that address interpreting regulations, addressing gray areas, and developing institutional policies. Q & A with ICE/CBP/CIS Salon A Facilitator: Tanya Grubbs, Georgia Southern University Panel: Christopher Chase, Joe Kernan and Tamara Matthew Discussion with officials from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Customs and Border Patrol (CBP), and Citizenship and Immigration Services (CIS). A Collaborative Effort Integrating International Student Recruitment and Service-Learning Salon B Presenters: Ron Jones, Georgia Southern University and Bob Frigo, North Carolina State Univ. Overview of an initiative involving the Office of Admissions, University Honors Program, and Office of Student Leadership and Civic Engagement created to combine international student recruitment and an alternative break experience. The experience involves both home institution and incountry students. Program rationale, model overview, and results will be discussed. My Friend Told Me: Dispelling Immigration Myths - Salon A Presenters: Gwen Fernandes, Georgia Institute of Technology and Tammy Rosner, Georgia State University Advisors from Georgia Tech and Georgia State take a look at the myths and rumors that students and scholars hear from friends and family, and dispel them by reviewing applicable regulations and case law. Utilizing U.S. Government Resources for International Student Recruitment Salon B Presenter: Amy Ryan, U.S. Department of Commerce and Mary Bennett, EducationUSA This session will present the services available from the U.S. Department of Commerce and the U.S. Department of State/EducationUSA to assist educational institutions with their international student recruitment. Presenters will share the latest programs and collaborative initiatives for international recruitment. SEVIS II Updates Salon A Presenter: Charlene Mattson, Angie Wyatt and Elizabeth Catterton, SEVP Representatives from the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) will offer updated information on SEVIS and SEVIS II. Topics discussed will include schedule, visualization, transition and the policy- SEVIS II relationship. Other SEVP program initiatives and advancements made throughout the past year will also be discussed. Hispanic and Hispanic Americans: There is a Difference Salon B Presenters: Veronikha Salazar and Kristin Kasting, Armstrong Atlantic State University Georgia is the second highest state experiencing growth of the Hispanic population in the nation. But, many people do not know there is a difference between Hispanic internationals and Hispanic Americans. We aim to clarify

the unique differences between these two populations and we can better serve them. "Situated Knowledge:" The role of "place-education" in short term faculty-led study abroad programs Salon C Presenter: Mikell Gleason, University of Georgia: Global Programs in Sustainability A look at how Global Programs in Sustainability at UGA develops its mission of "sustaining human societies and the natural environment" through marrying of sense of place to academics.

The A's B's and C's of Assessment Planning, Now What? Salon A Presenter: Jeffrey Jones, Savannah College of Art and Design The intended outcome of this session will be to introduce one university's annual comprehensive assessment plan, from initial planning, implementation and final review of the data. Finding Funds in a Financial Crisis: The Case for an Institutional International Fee Salon B Presenters: Adam Johnson, Columbus State and Jeff Palis, Georgia Southern University This presentation makes the case for an international fee whose proceeds can be used for internationalization of the campus, study abroad scholarships and international program development. LGBTIQQA Issues and International Students Salon C Presenter: Antony Ware, Georgia State University The student LGBTIQQA student population is becoming increasingly prominent on various campuses across the nation. Most support programs for these students support domestic students, but what about our international students affected as well?
