COURSE SYLLABUS BUSINESS ENGLISH LISTENING SKILL TERM II

INTRODUCTION This course is designed for the language majored students of Business - oriented English Program of the National Economics University. It is the second required Language skill course in Semester 2 of language majored students of their first year at National Economics University. It is mainly designed for students have finished their listening skill 1 in the first semester and has been equipped with basic practical skills to improve their listening skills step by step. This is the basis for students to further practice and to build up their knowledge, practice skills and tactics for intensive professional subjects in the next years. It is a 30-class-hour course of Listening Skill, in which there are two 45-minute periods of Listening Skill every week. II. GOALS The course aims at providing students with essential listening strategies in listening to a variety of themes/topics for their successful results of studying English in the first year at university, which will be a basis for their further study as follows: Healthy eating Celebrity Journalism Past experiences and stories Culture Services Companies Problems at work Meetings 4

III. OUTCOME After the course, students will be able to: Recognize sounds Distinguish sounds Recognize word stress, syllable stress, sentence stress Identify intonation in different situations Skim for general information Scan for certain limited information Listen for gist (key words) Listen for details (specific information) IV. ASSESSMENT AND EVALUATION An overall and on going policy will be applied. Throughout the course, students participation in in-and-off class activities and their homework fulfillment are also part of the assessment. 1. Group assignment: Students are grouped randomly (3 students/1 group) by the teacher at the beginning of the course. Each week, the assigned group collects a short part/ scene of an English speaking movie (less than 5 minutes) whose topic is related to the unit of the week. Then 03 exercises will be designed based on the interview. The movie will be played for the class to watch while the exercises will be completed at the same time. Assessment is based on the quality of the movie file, the appropriateness of the topic, the diversity and quality of exercises, the appropriateness of related exercises. 2. Mid-term test: The test will consist of three listening passages. After listening to the passages twice, students are to do exercises of varied types such as Finding specific information/ Gap filling/ Multiple Choice/ Comprehension questions, etc. The allotted time for the mid-term test is 15 minutes. 3. Final test: The test will consist of three listening passages. After listening to the passages twice, students are to do exercises of varied types such as Finding specific information/ Gap filling/ Multiple Choice/ Comprehension questions/ True - False statements/ Finding main ideas, etc. The allotted time for the final test is 30 minutes. VI. CONTENT AND SCHEDULE The course will take 15 weeks with 02 class hours each week.
