Detailed Lab Steps

Step 1.

Connect to R1s console port using the simulator. The window will look like a terminal emulator with a cursor at the bottom of the screen and the center of the screen mostly blank.

Step 2. Step 3.

From the simulators terminal-emulator screen, press Enter. Press the ? key to look at the available commands. Look for the reload and show commands. Do you see either command listed?

Step 4.

Try to enter privileged mode using the enable command. Are you prompted for a password?

Step 5.

When you are in privileged mode, use help by pressing the ? key to see the current list of commands. Look for the reload and show commands. Do you see either command listed?

Step 6. Step 7.

Move back to user mode by entering the disable command. Issue the reload command, which, if successful, reboots or reloads the router. What kind of response do you get? Does the router reload?

Step 8.

Type in some letters that do not form a valid command, for example, xyz123, and press Enter. What kind of response do you get? Is it the same message you got when you tried the reload command from user mode?

Step 9. Step 10.

Use the enable command to move back to enable mode. Try the reload command from enable mode. Does the command work now? (You should answer yes to any prompts.)

Hint or Answer

The simulator should display a prompt with the text Router> after you press Enter. If this text does not appear, click inside the window to make that window the focus of your computer desktop, and press Enter again. You should see the show command, because it is supported in user mode. However, you should not see the reload command, because it is not supported in user mode. This lab begins with the router having all default configuration, which means that no passwords are configured. You should see both commands, reload and show, because both are available in enable mode. The router rejects the reload command, stating that the command is unknown. The router rejects the command with the same error message seen in the previous step. The router will accept the reload command, and if you answer yes, that you want to reload the router, the router will reload.
