Job title: BERN Development Intern Oxygen Sensors Location: Anderson, SC Term: Summer, 2012 Degree/Major: BS, MS, or PhD / Ceramic Engineering or Material Science Job Description: The Oxygen Sensors Development Intern will participate in development of new oxygen sensor design to increase fuel efficiency and decrease emissions. Develop component fabrication concepts. Develop assembly concepts. Develop and evaluate requirements, component design concepts and assembly processes. Qualifications: Ability to create test plans. Ability to collect, organize and analyze data. Develop recommendations based on data. Ability to write reports and prepare presentations. Ability to lead workshops for idea generation. Job title: BERN Development Intern Oxygen Sensors Location: Anderson, SC Term: Open Degree/Major: BS, MS or PhD / Ceramic Engineering or Material Science Job Description: Work on development team which is developing a second generation thermal shock resistant automotive oxygen sensor. The chosen intern will perform engineering tasks to choose and evaluate new materials and processes and evaluate their use in oxygen sensors to support meeting team goals. Team goals are: 1. Reduce energy usage by replacing Atmospheric Plasma Spray system (high electricity and argon demand) which is used to apply a sensor element coating to improve thermal shock resistance. 2. Reduce raw material usage (overspray material is waste). 3. Improve thermal shock resistance of oxygen sensors, which will lead to a further reduction of emissions by enabling advanced emissions controls. 4. This new technology may be adapted to a new intake oxygen sensor, which will enable a further degree of advanced engine control to reduce fuel consumption. Knowledge and Skill Set: Ability to design, perform, and analyze experiments. Knowledge of materials properties, particularly at high temperatures. Managing building operations by utilizing smart systems becomes increasingly important. Bosch a leading manufacturer of devices for use in residential and commercial building environments: household appliances, power tools, photovoltaic systems, combined heat and power generators, space heating and cooling equipment, and electro vehicle controls is interested in integrating these devices into the smart grid. This internship is geared towards developing algorithms for customer-side devices that enable integration of these devices into smart buildings and smart grid.
