Standards Certification

Nexans, recognizing a need to

develop cable products which
minimize the effects of accidental fire,
manufacture Teck cable with jacket
compounds that assist in the limitation
of fire spread and acid gas evolution.

Nexans FIREX-II TECK 90 Minus 40C

Cables are certified to CSA Standard
C22.2 No. 131M89 (R1999) Type
TECK 90 Cables, up to 5 kV, shielded
and non shielded. File No. 23462.

When subjected to the Vertical Flame

Test Cables in Cabletroughs,
described in paragraph 4.11.4 of
CSA Standard C22.2 No. 0.301 the
complete cables, with or without outer
jacket, meet the 1.5 metre flamespread limit for cable damage. As a
result, Nexans Teck Cables are
marked with an FT4 designation.
The inner jackets of FIREX-II Cables
are flame-retardant in accordance
with Clause 4.11.1 of CSA Standard
C22.2 No. 0.301 and both inner
and outer jackets meet the acid gas
evolution requirement of 14%
maximum when tested to clause 4.31
of CSA Standard C22.2 No. 0.301.
As a result, Nexans Teck Cables are
marked with an AG14 designation.
This significant reduction in the
amount of corrosive acidic gases
evolved under fire conditions ensures
added safety to operational personnel
and protection of sensitive electronic
equipment.
In addition to meeting the CSA FT4
requirements at 70,000 BTU/hr,
Nexans FIREX-II TECK Cables pass
the ICEA T29-520 Vertical Cable Tray

Caution Notice

All Nexans FIREX-II TECK Cable

constructions up to 46 kV are marked
HL and can be used in any of the
hazardous locations listed.

In case of fire, well maintained early

warning smoke detectors will give an
alarm long before non-metallic
coverings become combustible.

For terminations and splices in

hazardous locations, approved
hazardous connectors must be
employed. (Approved non-hazardous
connectors are shown on the Cable
Specifications Tables.)
FIREX-II TECK 90 Minus 40C Cable
with steel armour has been approved
for use in the gaseous mines category
of the provisions of CSA Standard
C22.2 No. 174-M1984 (R1999).
(Certificate No. 596 Feb. 5, 1985,
Research and Technology Division of
Energy, Mines and Resources
Canada.)

However, in spite of the widespread

and long-standing use of PVC in
residential and commercial buildings,
all purchasers of PVC insulated/
jacketed products should be aware of
the following:
Non-metallic coverings of electrical
cables can burn and may transmit
fire when ignited.
Burning non-metallic coverings may
emit acid gases which are toxic and
may generate dense smoke.
Emission of acid gases may corrode
metal in the vicinity; e.g. sensitive
instruments and reinforcing rods in
cement.

Construction Data
Conductors
ASTM Class B stranded soft bare
copper. In sizes 8 AWG to 1000
kcmil, the conductors are compact
stranded to reduce cable diameter and
weight. Aluminum conductors can be
provided on special request.

Conductor Shield
Extruded semiconducting cross-linked
polyethylene conductor shielding is
applied to cables rated over 1000 V.

Insulation
EXELENE Insulation is used in Nexans
FIREX-II TECK Cables. EXELENE is
the Nexans trademark for cross-linked
polyethylene, the most widely used
polymeric material for insulating both
low and high voltage cables. The
insulated conductors in the unshielded
TECK cables rated 5 kV or less meet
the requirement of CSA for RW90
XLPE. Shielded FIREX-II TECK
armoured power cables rated 5 kV or
higher are insulated with tree-retardant
unfilled EXELENE meeting the
requirements of CSA Standard
C68.3-97 (R2001).
Designs are also available employing
AEIC-CS8-2000 insulated conductors
5 kV shielded and above.

Insulation Shield
Shielded FIREX-II TECK Power cables
rated 5 kV and higher have an
extruded layer of strippable semiconducting insulation shielding material,
applied using the EXELCURE process.
In multiconductor cables, the metallic
shield is copper tape, while in the
single conductor cables the concentric
ground provides the metallic shield.
Specific designs of metallic shielding
can be provided where required to
meet special conditions.
For shielded cable, Nexans has
introduced EXELCURE, its state of the
art process of dry curing insulation

systems. A reduction in moisture levels

during the curing process will reduce
the size and the number of voids in the
cable insulation resulting in longer
electrical life.
Radiant heat from the electrically
heated tube cures the polymer in a
pressurized dry nitrogen atmosphere.
Curing temperatures are in the
neighbourhood of 200300 degrees
Celsius at a pressure of ten
atmospheres. A scanning laser beam
monitors and controls the diameter of
the cable to preset conditions.
Detailed operating parameters are
maintained by a programmable microprocessor and display panel which
controls all heats, curing tube
temperature profile, pressures, cooling
levels and nitrogen pressurization
sequence.

Equipment Bonding
Conductor

Armour
Interlocking aluminum tape armour is
applied directly over the inner jacket.
Galvanized steel is also available on
request, but only for multiconductor
cables.

Outer Jacket
Low-acid-gas-emitting(b) fire-retardant(c)
PVC rated for low temperature is used.
See adjacent table for the physical
properties of this jacket material. The
standard outer jacket colour is black
for 600 V and 1 kV; orange for 5 kV;
and red for 15 kV. Other outer jacket
colours are available on special
request.
(a) Flame retardant means that a
cable with this material will pass the
FT1 Flame Test, Clause 4.11.1 of
CSA Standard C22.2 No. 0.301,
Test Methods for Electrical Wires and
Cables.

Class B stranded soft bare copper is

the standard equipment bonding
conductor material. Sizes are in
accordance with Table 16 of the
Canadian Electrical Code, Part 1. In
single conductor cables the equipment
bonding conductor is in the form of
concentric wires over the insulation or
shield. In three conductor cables with
metallic shielding the equipment
bonding conductor is in contact with
the shields.

(b) Low acid gas emitting means that

this material will not exceed the low
acid gas evolution limit of 14% when
tested in accordance with CSA
Standard C22.2 No. 0.301. Cables
are identified with the designation
AG14.

Fillers

Marking and
Identification

Where fillers are required, nonhygroscopic materials are used.

Core Binder
Where required, a binder tape is
applied over the assembled core.

Inner Jacket
The black PVC jacket is 90C and low
temperature rated, flame retardant(a),
and low acid gas emitting(b). See
adjacent table for physical properties
of this jacket material.

(c) Fire retardant means that a cable

with this material will pass the FT4
requirements of CSA Standard C22.2
No. 0.301 (Clause 4.11.4).

The outer jackets of Nexans FIREX-II

Inductive Reactance
The inductive reactance of cables in a multicable circuit is:

( )

GMD
XL = 0.0754 ln GMR /km to neutral at 60 Hz
where

GMD = equivalent axial spacing or axial distance between the phase

conductors in the circuit in mm
GMR = geometric mean radius of the phase conductor. For compact
round conductors GMR = 0.38 conductor diameter. (See Stranded
Bare Copper and Aluminum Conductor Information.)

Capacitive Reactance
Capacitive reactance is calculated from capacitance:
Xc =

1 = 2650 km at 60 Hz
2fC
C

where C = capacitance in F/km

For single conductor insulated, and shielded cables with outer metallic layer:
C = 0.0556 F/km
ln (D/d)
= dielectric constant of insulation (= 2.3 for XLPE)
D = diameter over cable dielectric
d = diameter under cable dielectric
Note: Capacitive reactance can normally be neglected for open lines up to
about 40 km or in cables up to 20 km in length.

Charging Current
Charging current is calculated from capacitance and voltage as follows:
lch = 2fCE = 377 CE mA/km at 60 Hz
where

C = capacitance in F/km (see above)

E = line to neutral voltage in kV

Voltage Drop
For multi conductor cables and single conductor cables at close spacing, voltage
drop may be determined by use of the method shown in the following pages.
Where necessary to calculate for single conductors spaced apart, the following
formula will give sufficiently accurate results:
Es Er = l (R cos + XL sin) V/km to neutral

Voltage Drop
The voltage drop curves contained in this publication are applicable to aluminum
armoured TECK cables. For steel armoured TECK cables, increase the values
obtained from the curves by 20% to estimate the voltage drop.
In the table for 3 phase 60Hz Voltage Drop Single Conductor TECK are curves of
voltage drop for single and 3 conductor cables with copper conductors, 3 phase,
60 cycles. The voltage drop for 4 conductor cables, such as in a 3 phase, 4 wire
grounded neutral system, may be taken from the curve for a 3 conductor cable,
where the fourth conductor carries only unbalance current of a 3 phase system.
The voltage drop curves are generated using the following formula:
Voltage Drop = Rcos + XLsin (volts/amp-km)
where:

R = AC resistance (ohms/km)
XL = inductive reactance (ohms/km)
= load power factor angle
(NB: 100cos = % load power factor)

To calculate the net voltage drop for a specific application, the following formula
must be used to account for systems other than 3 phase, circuit length and current:
Net Voltage Drop = f x K x I x L
Net Voltage Drop = 1000
where:

load 200 amps at 90% load power factor.

30

Installation and Technical Data

SOLUTION

Find the K factor from the single conductor TECK Voltage Drop Curve; for 250
kcmil conductor at 90% Load Factor we get:
K = 0.250 volts per 1000 amp meters
therefore, from the voltage drop formula we calculate the voltage drop as:
Voltage Drop = 1 x 0.250 x 200 x 250
1000
Voltage Drop = 12.5 volts
or
Voltage Drop = 12.5 x 100%
Voltage Drop = 347
Voltage Drop = 3.6%

Example 2
Consider the above example with a three-conductor TECK and the same
conditions.
SOLUTION

Find the K factor from the three conductor TECK Voltage Drop Curve; for 250
kcmil conductor at 90% Load Factor we get:
K = 0.195 volts per 1000 amp meters
therefore, from the voltage drop formula we calculate the voltage drop as:
Voltage Drop = 1 x 0.195 x 200 x 250
1000
Voltage Drop = 9.75 volts
or
Voltage Drop = 9.75 x 100%
Voltage Drop = 347
Voltage Drop = 2.8%

TECK Short circuit Capacity XLPE Insulated Copper Conductors

Short circuit Calculations

The short circuit capabilities of the conductors of a cable for a given duration
depend principally on their heat capacities, and are limited by the maximum
temperature permitted under short-circuit conditions. The temperature limits
established by Nexans are as follows:
250C at phase conductor
200C at shield or concentric bonding conductor
The following graph provides a means of estimating the short circuit capacity of
copper XLPE or TRXLPE Insulated conductors. These curves are plotted for
durations in cycles (60 Hz basis). Logarithmic interpolation will provide values for
intermediate durations. The curves may also be used to determine the amount of
conducting material required for a known short-circuit condition.
It is important to limit short circuit durations to no more than 2 or 3 seconds as no
heat flow is taken into account in the functions used to calculate these curves.

INSTALLATION DATA
Pulling Tension Limits
It is recommended that FIREX -II TECK Cables be pulled on the conductors using
a pulling eye where necessary. The maximum permissible tension is 8 lbf/kcmil
(=10,000 lbf/in2) for single conductor cables. For three conductor cables
recommended maximum pulling tension is 16 lbf/kcmil based on the area of one
conductor only. To avoid displacing the armour it may be necessary to use a
basket grip over the outer jacket as well as the pulling eye. The use of guide
rollers or other friction-reducing devices is highly recommended.
Low-temperature Installation
Nexans FIREX -II TECK Cables meet CSA cold bend and impact requirements at
minus 40C. These tests are conducted under carefully controlled laboratory
conditions to ensure comparability of results from different laboratories.
Since actual field conditions are not subject to such control it is recommended
that, wherever possible, provision be made for the heating of cables to at least
minus 10C until the actual cable installation. This will minimize the risk of
damaging cables in very cold weather.
Vertical Installation
For vertical installations, the use of a messenger may be necessary to support the
cable during installation. Offsets may well be necessary for final positioning of
the cable. Please consult your nearest Nexans Sales Office for recommendations
and information on Vertex cable.
Bending Radius
Nexans FIREX -II TECK Cables are flexible and can be trained easily. The
following table gives minimum bending radius factors for final training. During
installation, and especially while pulling, bending radii should be twice the values
shown below:
Up to 5 kV
(Unshielded)
Over 5 kV and all
metal tape shielded
cable

7 x Outside Diameter

12 x Outside Diameter

Note: The bending radius is that of the inner surface of the cable at the bend.
In all cases these values are for permanent training after installation. Larger radii
are recommended wherever the cable is being pulled under tension, preferably not
less than twice and in no case less than 1.5 times the values for permanent
training.

36

Installation and Technical Data

Pulling Tension Calculations
The maximum pulling tension on a cable should not exceed:
a) where pulled by means of the conductor(s)
70nA newtons (N) for copper
50nA N for aluminum
where n = 1 for single conductor cable
1.5 for 2C cable
2 for 3C cable and for triplexed 1C cables
A = cross-section of one conductor (mm2)
b) where pulled by means of a basket grip over an outer jacket or
concentric wires 5000 N or value from (a) above, whichever is the lower.
The tension resulting from a given duct installation is calculated as follows:
a) T = 9.8 LWf (for a straight section)
where T = pulling tension, N
L = length of duct section, m
W = linear mass of cable, kg/m
f = coefficient of friction, typically 0.35
b) T = T2 + T1efa (for a duct with a bend)
where T 2 = tension for the straight section following the bend
(calculated as in (a) above)
T 1 = tension for the straight section preceding the bend
e = 2.71828
f = coefficient of friction
a = angle of bend, radians
efa is evaluated for some common conditions:

efa

f = 0.3

f = 0.35

f = 0.4

At any bend the tension should not exceed 3600 N/m of radius of the bend in
order to avoid excessive compression forces in the cable.

Assuming the illustrated duct layout and:

triplexed 3 x 1/c 500 kcmil copper 15 kV cable
linear mass = 11.0 kg/m
f = 0.35
pulling from A to F
Tension at B (T1) = 9.8 x 60 x 11.0 x 0.35 = 2270 N
Tension at C (T2) = T1efa = 2270 x 1.32 = 3000 N
Tension at D (T3) = 3000 + (9.8 x 20 x 11.0 x 0.35) = 3755 N
Tension at E (T4) = T3efa = 3755 x 1.73 = 6500 N
Tension at F (T5) = 6500 + (9.8 x 30 x 11.0 x 0.35) = 7630 N

37

Installation and Technical Data

The maximum permissible tension on this cable would be
70 x 2 x 253 = 35,420 N
The tension at E = 6500/3 = 2170 N/m of radius, which is not excessive;
however, it is prudent to reduce this value, if possible, by comparing the results if
the cable is pulled from F to A:
Tension at E (T1) = 9.8 x 30 x 11.0 x 0.35 = 1130 N
Tension at D (T2) = 1130 x 1.73 = 1960 N
Tension at C (T3) = 1960 + (9.8 x 20 x 11.0 x 0.35) = 2715 N
Tension at B (T4) = 2715 x 1.32 = 3580 N
Tension at A (T5) = 3580 + (9.8 x 60 x 11.0 x 0.35) = 5840 N
Pulling from F to A results in significantly lower tensions in the bends and overall,
and should be selected as the preferred direction of pulling.

Field Testing
Voltage tests after installation should
be made as soon as possible. Before
applying the test voltage, ensure that
all equipment is disconnected from the
cable circuit. Also ensure that there is
sufficient clearance between the cable
ends and any grounded surfaces,
objects or persons. We recommend
that only qualified persons familiar
with the process and associated safety
precautions perform a D.C. Hipot test.
For all 5kV and higher shielded cable,
a high-voltage DC test made before
placing a new cable system in service
will normally reveal gross
imperfections such as mechanical
damage during installation or
improperly made accessories. It is not
expected to reveal deterioration due to
ageing in service.

At any time during installation, a Proof

Test may be made at a voltage not
exceeding that shown in the table
applied for five minutes.

These tests should only be undertaken

by persons familiar with the use of the
equipment and appropriate safety
precautions. If any equipment is
included beyond the cable
terminations, the dielectric strength of
such equipment must be taken into
consideration when establishing the
test voltage.

After installation and before the cable

is placed in regular service, an
Acceptance Test may be made at a
voltage not exceeding that shown in
the table applied for 15 consecutive
minutes.
After the cable has been completely
installed and placed in regular
service, a Maintenance Test may be
made at any time within the first five
years at a voltage not exceeding that
shown in the table applied for five
consecutive minutes. Recent research
has shown that the loss of dielectric
strength caused by normal wet aging
will shorten the cable life when
