INTRODUCTION

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) publishes a training manual for seafarers on the Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW). This training manual and its circulars have been transcribed to CD-ROM producing an extremely flexible online training tool. The CD-ROM offers both trainers and student: Text available in English, French and Spanish Complete and up-to-date text of the STCW manual and its circulars Text browsing for simple, quick and accurate information retrieval Table of Contents provides instant access to any part of the text Cross references are hyper-text links Comprehensive text searching

System Requirements
Windows 98, 2000, 2003, XP, NT and ME. The hardware can be any PC with a Pentium I or upwards processor, at least 24 MB of RAM, VGA monitor, and CD drive. When installed to hard disk, the software and data will require approximately 4 MB. The Browser should be Internet Explorer 5 (or later) or equivalent Netscape Navigator.

INSTALLING THE SOFTWARE

Single user installation


Auto installation The software will install itself automatically when the CD is inserted into the CD drive. It will advise you to exit all windows programs before continuing with the setup. During the installation you will be asked to confirm the Destination Folder which is the directory into which the software and data is installed. The default is C:\STCW and may be changed as required. The system requires approximately 4 MB of disk space in this directory. Manual installation If auto install is turned off or the system does not install itself automatically when you insert the CD you will have to start the installation manually. Select Start / Run and enter D:\setup or double click on setup.exe in the CD's top level directory. Desk top short cut

When the software has been installed a short cut to the STCW on CD-ROM program will be placed on your desk top. Use this short cut to start the program.

Network installation
Shared network drive Install the system as described for a single user (see above) on the shared network disk. Before setting up the workstations, enter the program serial number and register the product (see the next section on running the program for the first time). Future upgrades need be applied to this installation only. Workstations Make a short cut on the workstation desktop to the program file called STCW.EXE in the STCW installation directory on the shared network drive. Please note that each workstation must have an appropriate browser installed (Intenet Explorer 5 or later or equivalent Netscape Navigator).

PROGRAM ACTIVATION
your Advance Purchase Code supplied with the CD access to the Internet an email address

In order to activate your computer you require:

Request for STCW program activation code


When you start up the STCW program it will display the Welcome to STCW on CD screen inviting you to enter your activation code. If you have already obtained your activation code, enter it now and press OK. The program will be activated and can be used as required. If you have not yet obtained your activation code you will need to connect to the IMOactivate web site.

To obtain your activation code click on the www.IMOactive.com link. This will connect to the IMOactivate web site, see the next screen.

Having successfully connected to the IMOactivate web site you will see the following screen.

The Product and Serial Number will be pre-entered for you. Enter your email address and the Advance Purchase Code supplied with the CD. Please note: only one activation per Advance Purchase code will be issued.

Display your STCW program activation code

Click the Get Activation Code button. Your activation code will be displayed and a confirmation email will be sent to your email address. Finally, copy the activation code and enter it into the Welcome to STCW on CD screen and press OK.

If the activation code is accepted STCW on CD is activated and will always start up immediately, see Section 4 following. If the activation code is not accepted the program closes immediately.

Reinstallation and reactivation


Should you need to re-install on to the same computer it will display the same Serial Number and ask you to enter the same activation code. If you have forgotten or misplaced your original activation code you can re-display it by connecting to the IMOactivate web site at www.IMOactive.com and reentering your original Advance Purchase Code. When you click the Get Activation Code button your original activation code will be displayed. This code will re-activate the program

If you have installed on to a different computer the serial number will be different and your original activation code will be rejected. In this case, please email your program activation support request to CDsupport@existec.com quoting your original Advance Purchase Code and the new serial number.

HOW TO USE THE PROGRAM

Double click on the STCW on CD-ROM short cut to start the program. As soon as the program starts, the language selection screen is displayed.

The program remembers the last language used and will display the language selection screen in that language. Click the language you require. The STCW on CD-ROM main screen will now be displayed at the start of the browse sequence.

The main screen comprises two resizable windows. The left hand window contains the Table of Contents. The right hand window displays the Current Topic. You can resize either window to suit your desktop.

Table of Contents
The Table of Contents is a structured outline of the text which can be expanded or collapsed.

Click on the icons to expand and collapse the structure, and click on the topic titles to display the topic contents.

Clicking on the plus sign to the left of the closed book will expand the structure downwards. Double clicking on the topic title or closed book icon will also expand the structure, and it will display the topic as well.

Clicking on the minus sign to the left of the open book will collapse the structure. Double clicking on the topic title or open book icon will also collapse the structure, and it will display the topic as well.

Clicking on any topic title will display that topic in the right hand window. Note that the page icon signifies the lowest level of the structure.

Contents tab page


Clicking the Contents tab will display the Contents window. The structure will expand automatically according to the topic currently displayed in the topic window on the right hand side.

Note that when the mouse pointers pauses over a topic title in the Table of Contents, the full title is displayed in a pop up tool-tip box.

Search tab page


Click on the Search tab to search for occurrences of a word, words or phrase anywhere within the STCW text.

Previous search strings can be recalled by clicking on the downward pointing list box indicator at the right hand side of the search string entry field. Search for : Word Enter the word or part word (no spaces) and click List Topics. Topics containing that word will be listed. Select the topic and then click Display. The topic will be displayed in the topic window and each occurrence of the word will be highlighted. Words Enter the words, separated by spaces and click List Topics. Topics containing at least one occurrence of all the words entered will be listed. Select the topic and then click Display. The topic will be displayed in the topic window and each occurrence of the words will be highlighted. Phrase Enter the phrase within double quotation marks, e.g. "dangerous goods". Click List Topics and select the topic from the list. Click Display to display the topic in the topic window. Phrases Enter each phrase within quotation marks and add a space between each phrase, e.g. "maritime pilot" "poor memory" "case studies" Boolean You can enhance the search by including boolean operators AND, OR, NOT and/or NEAR. These four operators can be selected by clicking the right pointing list box indicator to the right of the search string entry field. AND OR NOT NEAR Boolean examples Search string eyesight AND speech eyesight OR speech Topics satisfying the search criteria Those containing the word eyesight and the word speech. Those containing the word eyesight or the word speech or both words. "loss of appetite" AND "maritime pilot" Those containing the phrase "loss of appetite" and the phrase "maritime pilot". "loss of appetite" OR "maritime pilot" Those containing the phrase "loss of appetite" or the phrase "maritime pilot" or both phrases. Brackets can be used to make up expressions (see last example in above table) and the operators within the brackets are evaluated before the operators outside the brackets. Then the operators are evaluated left-to-right. Filters : You can filter the search by ticking the option boxes. The word or phrase either side of And must be present in the topic. The And operator is the default and may be replaced by a space. Either or both word or phrase either side of Or is present in the topic. The word or phrase before Not must be present and the word or phrase after Not must not be present. The word or phrase either side of Near must be present in adjacent sentences (approximately).

User Manual This option will search topics currently listed. Use this option to refine your search list. Tick this option if you want the search to find occurrences of words similar to your search string. Unticked, both titles and topics will be searched. Ticking this option only the topic titles will be searched.

Displaying the results : Click List Topics to start the search process and display the topic titles in which your search text occurs. To display the topic contents, either : select the topic title and then click the Display button double click on the topic title Having selected and displayed a topic, clicking on the Contents tab will expand the Table of Contents structure according to the current topic. Click List Topics to start the search process and display the topic titles in which your search string occurs. The Topic List comprises three columns, i.e. Title, Location and Rank. The topic list is in Rank order, i.e. topics with most hits are sorted to the top of the topic list. You can expand or contract the column widths by dragging the column dividers. For instance, you can hide totally the Location column by dragging its column divider to the left as far as it will go. You can sort the list by clicking on the column header, e.g. clicking on the Title column header will list the topics in ascending order of topic title. To display the contents of a topic in the list, either : select the topic title and then click the Display button double click on the topic title Having selected and displayed a topic, clicking on the Contents tab will expand the Table of Contents structure according to the current topic.

Favorites tab page


If you find that you need to access specific topics frequently then you can make a list of these "favorites" for future reference.

Add a favorite topic :

Click the Contents tab and select the topic. Then click the Favorites tab and press Add. The topic will be added to your list of favorites. Display a favorite topic : Select the topic in the favorites list and then click Display or double click the topic. Remove a favorite topic : Select the topic in the favorites list and then click Remove.

Current Topic
To display the text of a topic, expand the Table of Contents and click on the topic title.

Blue text are links to other text. Some links jump to other topics, e.g. regulations, resolutions, sections, etc. Other links have been inserted to help you find information within this topic, especially when the topic is long and you need to scroll down to find information. Footnotes are signified by the blue underlined text "see note 1". Clicking on this text will pop up a window containing the footnote. The next mouse click will remove this pop up window. All footnotes can be found at the end of the topic, should you wish to view them all together or print them.

Next

The Previous button will display the previous topic in the browse sequence. The browse sequence can be seen by expanding the Table of Contents and working your way through the list of topics from the first to last. The Next button will display the next topic in the browse sequence.

The back button will retrace the path of topics visited backwards until the starting point is reached. Forward The Forward button becomes active when you have used the Back button and will redisplay the topics already visited in a forwards direction. The home button will take you back to the start of the browse sequence, i.e. STCW on Home CD-ROM. You may print either the current topic or the current topic and all linked topics. Warning: Print when selecting all linked topics, you need to consider the amount of printing that will be generated. Having selected the topic(s) to be printed, the standard Printer Setup dialogue box for your PC is displayed. Set the printer settings as required and send the topic(s) to the printer. Copy and Paste (generic functions) Instead of printing a complete topic, you may select text and copy it into another application such as Notepad or Word. Select the text in the Topic window and click the right mouse button to pop up a menu. Select the Copy option to copy the selected text to the windows clipboard. Once in the clipboard you will be able to Paste the contents to another application.

Internet links
You will find internet links in the About STCW on CD-ROM page and the Circulars index page. If you have an internet connection you can click on these links to connect to the web sites of IMO or Exis Technologies Limited. The web page is displayed in the right hand window. You may wish to enlarge this window to suit the style of the web site. The Back and Forward buttons operate as normal browser buttons. However, do not use the Previous or Next button to navigate the web site as they simply move to the adjacent topic in the Table of Contents browse sequence. When you have finished viewing the web site just go to another topic or close the program.
