Dances in ballrooms were sequence dances until the very early 20th century. After modern ballroom dancing developed, in England, sequence dancing still continued socially with Old Time dances, or the new ballroom or Latin dance figures. Formation Dance started in the 1920s and was introduced by Olive Ripman under the name pattern dancing which started in Londons Astoria Ballroom in 1932. It became a competitive dance form with contests spreading to many other countries and was a part of the 1949 and 1960s BBC TVs Come Dancing, the fore runner of So you think you can Dance. It is now a world competitive sport, marked on a 6 minute choreography which includes entry to and from the floor and a gong is used to clearly signify which is the section to be judged. Only four and a half minutes of this is judged as a dancesport routine of an individual couple and the overall readability of the pattern movements and transitions and the synchronicity of all the couples on the floor. Free form choreography and lifts are allowed in the walk on and walk off sections, clearly marked by a gong which can include other dance forms like jazz dance or ballet. The five International Latin dances of Cha Cha, Rumba, Jive, Paso Doble and Samba make up the Latin formation. The five international ballroom dances Waltz, Quickstep, Tango, Viennese Waltz and Foxtrot make up the Standard or Ballroom formation. The team can show off their technique and ability with tricks such as round abouts, chain reactions and shapes, also known as patterns or images forming diamonds, squares, diagonals, circles and lines as part of their choreography. The most famous formation dance competition is held in Blackpool since 1949, in the Empress Ballroom, Winter Gardens. It starts with the childrens competitions, held since 1947, then followed by the adult teams from clubs and Universities from the US, China, Europe, Russia, England and other countries from around the world. Other notable competitions are the Donaupokal Invitational in Vienna. Germany has several leagues of formation teams, that hold several competitions every year. You can enjoy the give and take of working together as partners to create something amazing, dynamic, beautiful and very romantic, elegant ballroom dancing. Enjoy the benefits at the 30-Up Club.

Sergey KIZICHENKO Sophie POPIELAK David BRACE Louise BRACE Masao ABE Mary ALEXANDER Charles ALEXANDER Note: Ballroom dancing is all about partnering using individual skills, intelligence and talent to learn teamwork to achieve agreed goals. It also has benefits. A 2007 Danish study found that ballroom dancing had lowered the risk of memory related diseases, like Alzheimer's and dementia by a stunning 73%, by the constant use of short-term memory during dancing, engaging the parts of the brain involved in memory, of complex steps and figures and to follow the precise beat of the music. Ballroom is a rigorous activity that uses large muscle groups. Sequence dance was easy to learn and popular among seniors in Britain for a long time because they followed exactly what everyone else was doing. It has become very in vogue. Now even college kids are figuring out the appeal of dancing with a partner and universities have formed ballroom and formation teams, plus social dancing as well as the highly competitive dances.

November 2011

A Welcome, and Thanks We welcome Yuli Peng to the Board this year, and look forward to her being the new welcoming face of the Club at the front door on dance nights. We are indebted to Michelle Strom and Vincy Leung for stepping in and covering Glen Skuces work as Treasurer when he resigned shortly after the General Meeting in September. Thank you to Werner and Glen for their work on the Board, and to the many others who have contributed to the success of the Club during the year. In particular I would like to thank Ruth Dyson, Joanne Pritchard, Lily Short, Vincy Leung and Bassam Hanafi for the time they spent making the Tuesday Tea Dance such a success. Many thanks to Sue Adorjan, who brought flowers for the front desk last week. Bring Some Friends It is good to see that our attendance on dance nights is going back up, and that many new people are being introduced to the Club. More important than just the numbers, the infusion of enthusiasm and new ideas is helping us in our process of renewal. You can help! Please join those who are already bringing friends to the Club for a night out. Just one or two more people, or a group, are always welcome and we will work hard to find the seating you want and to give your guests a quality experience.

LESSON WITH ANTON & ANNA

6:00 - 7:15 pm on Sat., Nov. 26, 2011. Open only to 110 Club members who are attending the Sat. Nov. 26th dance and Grahams Group. Graham will take a group picture of participants in the lesson with the Canadian Professional Ballroom champions for three consecutive years.

WE ARE IN URGENT NEED OF A TREASURER! We have broken up the Treasurers job to make it easier. A year ago, we took away responsibility for Reservations, and are now removing the need for the Treasurer or Vice Treasurer to work or even be present- on a dance night. Michelle Strom estimates that the position will only now require just 2 hours a week (longer if the Treasurer is inexperienced) plus attendance at the monthly Board meetings. Please contact a Board Member if you can help us.

with traditional countdown, balloon cascade, noise-makers & all the magic moments leading up to it, intoxicating ambiance, fairy lights, party gear, mementos, white table linens, great music and exceptional food from Leins Catering and even a dance showcase... at this our most elegant event of the year!!!

NOV. D.J. SCHEDULE

Friday 4 11 18 25 Haida Tom Larry Tom Saturday 5 12 19 26 Pat Tom Orlando Ralph

I have not received any news of illnesses regarding any of our members. I did send cards to Harry Bovay who lost his wife Moira in September to a long illness. I also sent a get well card to Gerald Winstanley who is recovering from Surgery. Frances, our wonderful door cashier broke her finger. A card was sent along with our wishes for a speedy return. I had a lovely conversation with Fran Woodward. She and Jack are doing very nicely in Oshawa but regret that they can no longer make the arduous trip to the dance club. I am hoping to see them some afternoon at the Tea Dance. I will make inquiries regarding the health and well being of long standing members i.e. Isabelle and Jack Baird, Jerome and Karen Hurley, Laura and Ken Hahn.
